CH – 10 LIVING CREATURES: EXPLORING THEIR CHARACTERISTICS

NOTES

1. Characteristics of Living Beings:

o Movement: Animals move from place to place; plants show movements like opening
flowers or climbers winding.

o Growth: Living beings grow in size over time (e.g., a child grows into an adult, seeds
grow into plants).

o Nutrition: All living beings need food for energy and growth.

o Respiration: Living beings breathe to produce energy. Plants use stomata for this
process.

o Excretion: Removal of waste products, such as sweat or urine in animals, and excess
water or minerals in plants.

o Response to Stimuli: Living beings react to changes in their environment (e.g.,

touch-me-not plant folds when touched).

o Reproduction: Living beings produce young ones to ensure the continuity of their
kind.

2. Non-living things do not exhibit these characteristics.

3. Seed Germination:

o Essential conditions: water, air, and suitable sunlight.

o Water softens the seed coat and activates the embryo for growth. Air provides
oxygen for respiration, most seeds do not require light for germination but after
germination sunlight is required for further growth of the seedling.

4. Growth and Movement in Plants:

o Roots grow downward, and shoots grow upward, even when plants are placed in
different directions.

o Plants show movement toward sunlight.

5. Life Cycles:

o Plants: seed (stage 1 )→ seed germination(stage 2 ) → Appearance of leaves(stage 3 )

→ Appearance of flowers (stage 4 ) →Appearance of fruits(stage 5 ) → fruit (new
seeds).

o Mosquitoes: Life cycle has 4 stages—egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

o Frogs: Life cycle includes egg → tadpole → froglet → adult frog.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

1 . List the similarities and differences in life cycles of plants and animals.
Answer:Similarities in life cycles between plants and animals are as follows
(i) Both undergo different stages in their life cycles (e.g. seed to plant, egg to adult).
(ii) Both reproduce to maintain the continuity of their own kind.

Differences in life cycles of plants and animals are as follows

(i) Animals move from one place to another, while most plants are stationary.
(ii) Animal life cycle involve stages like birth, growth and reproduction, while plant life cycles include
seed germination, growth, flowering and seed production.

2. You have learnt that different conditions are required for seed germination. How can we use this
knowledge for proper storage of grains and pulses?
Answer:To ensure proper storage of grains and pulses and prevent germination:

 Keep Dry

 Cool Storage

 Airtight Containers

3. You have learnt that a tail is present in a tadpole but it disappears as it grows into a frog.
What is the advantage of having a tail in the tadpole stage?
Answer:The tail in the tadpole stage of a frog provides

 Swimming Ability: It helps the tadpole swim efficiently in water to find food and escape
predators.

 Balance and Stability: Assist in maintaining balance while moving in water.

4. What are the similarities and distinguishing features in the life cycles of a mosquito and a
frog?
Answer: Similarities

 Both begin life as eggs.

 Both have a larval stage (tadpole in frogs, larvae in mosquitoes) that is aquatic.

Distinguishing Features
Mosquitoes have four stages
Egg → Larva → Pupa → Adult
Respiration: Larvae and pupae breathe through siphons.

Frog has four stages

Egg → Tadpole → Froglet → Adult
Respiration: Tadpoles have gills, adults have lungs and can respire through their skin.
5.Consider the diagram given below and answer the following questions.

(i) Identify A, B and C in given life cycle of mosquito.

(ii) Name any two diseases that are transmitted by female mosquito.
(iii) What can you do to prevent the development of ‘ A ‘?
Answer:
(i) The figure can be labelled as follows A-Egg, B-Larva, C-Pupa
(ii) The female mosquito transmits diseases like malaria and dengue.
(iii) The methods to prevent the formation of A, i.e.

eggs are-

 Not allowing water to stagnate in our surroundings.

 Spraying of kerosene oil in areas where water tends to gather.

6.Can we grow plants without germinating their seeds? Explore and write some examples.
Answer:
Yes, plants can be grown without germinating seeds through various method. Here are some
examples.
(i) Many plants can grow from cuttings taken from the parent plant. For example, tomato plants
or rose bushes can be grown from cuttings of the stems.
(ii) Some plants like strawberries, produce long, horizontal stems that grow into a new plant.
(iii) Plants like potatoes can be grown from tubers (the underground storage organs.)
