acid: [3]
(i) dehydrating property
(ii) acidic nature
(iii) oxidizing property
Question No. 3
(a) Aluminium is extracted from its chief ore, bauxite. The ore is first purified and
then the metal is extracted from it by electrolytic reduction. [5]
(i) Write three balanced equations for the reactions involved in the
purification of bauxite.
(ii) State the composition of the electrolyte used during the extraction of
aluminium by the electrolytic process.
(iii) Why does the anode have to be replaced from time to time in this
electrolytic process?

(b) All ores are minerals, but all minerals are not ores. Explain the statement. [2]
(c) Identify the anion present in each of the following compounds: [3]
(i) Aqueous solution of compound A reacts with barium nitrate solution to
give a white precipitate, which is insoluble in dilute nitric acid.
(ii) Compound B, when warmed with dilute sulphuric acid, gives a gas which
turns acidified potassium dichromate solution green.
(iii) Compound C, when heated with copper turnings and conc. sulphuric acid,
liberates a reddish-brown gas.
