This Question Paper has five pages.
You will not be allowed to write for the first 15 minutes. This time must be spent in
reading the Question Paper.
The time given at the head of this Paper is the time allowed for writing answers.

This Paper is divided into two sections.


Answer all the parts of Question No 1 (Section A) and any four questions of Section B.
Maximum marks for a question or parts of a question are given in brackets [ ].

SECTION A (40 Marks)


Answer all the parts.
Question No. 1
(a) In each case, choose the correct option: [5]
(i) The metal which is not extracted by electrolysis of its fused salt is:

(d) (i) An inorganic compound contains 29.11% sodium, 40.51% sulphur and
30.38% oxygen. Determine the empirical formula of the compound.

(ii) In the formation of the compound AB2, the atom A gives one electron to
each atom of B. Draw the electron dot structure of this compound and
state the type of bonding involved. [2]

(e) What do you observe when: [5]


(i) conc. sulphuric acid is added to sugar crystals?
(ii) the gas formed on heating rock salt and conc. sulphuric acid is passed
through a solution of lead nitrate?
(iii) a solution of sodium hydroxide is added to a solution of ferrous sulphate
first slowly and then in excess?
(iv) concentrated nitric acid is added to copper?
(v) ammonia gas is passed for a long time through the solution obtained by
reacting copper [II] oxide and dilute sulphuric acid?

(a) An element E has two electrons in its M shell. Answer the following questions:

(i) State the position of E in the periodic table.
(ii) Name the inert gas isoelectronic with the cation of E.
(iii) Draw the electron dot diagram of the oxide of E.
(iv) Predict the solubility of the hydroxide of E.
(v) Name the gas evolved when dilute hydrochloric acid is added to E.

(b) A compound with empirical formula AB has vapour density three times its
empirical formula weight. Find the molecular formula of the compound. [2]

(c) Give relevant chemical equations to show the following properties of sulphuric
acid: [3]
(i) dehydrating property
(ii) acidic nature
(iii) oxidizing property

Question No. 3
(a) Aluminium is extracted from its chief ore, bauxite. The ore is first purified and
then the metal is extracted from it by electrolytic reduction. [5]
(i) Write three balanced equations for the reactions involved in the
purification of bauxite.
(ii) State the composition of the electrolyte used during the extraction of
aluminium by the electrolytic process.
(iii) Why does the anode have to be replaced from time to time in this
electrolytic process?

(b) All ores are minerals, but all minerals are not ores. Explain the statement. [2]

(c) Identify the anion present in each of the following compounds: [3]
(i) Aqueous solution of compound A reacts with barium nitrate solution to
give a white precipitate, which is insoluble in dilute nitric acid.
(ii) Compound B, when warmed with dilute sulphuric acid, gives a gas which
turns acidified potassium dichromate solution green.
(iii) Compound C, when heated with copper turnings and conc. sulphuric acid,
liberates a reddish-brown gas.

(v) iron is rendered passive with fuming nitric acid.
(b) Select the ion in each case, that would get selectively discharged from the
aqueous mixture of the ions listed below: [2]

(ii) Pb2+, Ag+, Cu2+
(c) For the electrorefining of copper: [3]
(i) What is the cathode made up of?
(ii) State the composition of the electrolyte.
(iii) Write the reactions that take place at the cathode and the anode.

(a) Give a chemical test to distinguish between: [4]
(i) ammonium sulphate and sodium sulphate.
(ii) calcium nitrate solution and lead nitrate solution.
(b) Compound A is water soluble and gives a curdy white precipitate B with silver
nitrate solution. B is soluble in ammonium hydroxide, but insoluble in dilute
nitric acid. When ammonium hydroxide is added to an aqueous solution of the
compound A, a gelatinous white precipitate C forms which becomes soluble in
an excess of ammonium hydroxide.
Identify A, B and C and give the balanced chemical equations for the reactions
involved. [6]
