Introduction

In English, there are four language skills, they are listening,

speaking, reading, and writing. One of the most important language

skills that must be mastered by students is reading. Reading is a

window to the world. By reading, readers will get a lot of very

useful information, whether new or what they have read before.

For some people, reading can be challenging if the material is

unfamiliar, technical, or complex. One of the challenging reading

skills is comprehension. Reading can help develop the thinking

process of the reader and it creates judgment thinking. According

to Yamashita (2013), states that accompanied by feelings and

emotions, reading attitude is a state of mind accompanied by

feelings and emotions that makes reading more or less probable.

In conclusion, reading attitude is an internal aspect that can

help the learner develop and have live long reading skills.

Currently, with the development of technology and information,

there are a lot of media that can make it easier for readers to

find the reading material they need. Then there is also the

presence of online reading applications that allow users to read

and/or write stories by the author himself and can be read by


various people around the world. Wattpad is one of the many online

reading applications used by the public.

The Wattpad application is the result of collaboration between

Allen Lau and Ivan Yuen. This app is based in Toronto, Canada.

According to Tirocchi (2018), the Wattpad application is quite

influential in the world community. In fact, according to AdSpark

Team (2018), this application also affects the Philippines

publishing industry where there are many novels labeled Wattpad.

Thus, many successful book writers started their careers from

Wattpad. This platform continues its growth in the Philippines

with over 7 million monthly users.

Nowadays, most of the young people age 12 to 18 use Wattpad.

This study will take place to find out if reading Wattpad really

helps the students of Mount Carmel School of San Luis to improve

their reading skills.

Statement of the Problem

This study is design to determine the students’ attitude toward

the use of Wattpad in reading comprehension among the students at

Mount Carmel School of San Luis. Specifically, it answers the

following questions:
1. What is the demographic profile of the correspondents in terms

of:

1.1. Age

1.2. Gender

2. Do the student’s attitude towards reading Wattpad affects the

reading comprehension of the student?

3. What reading component(s) are being affected by reading Wattpad?

4. How student’s attitudes through the use of Wattpad affect

reading in terms of:

1.1. Phonemic Awareness

1.2. Vocabulary

1.3. Fluency

1.4. Phonic

1.5. Comprehension

Data Gathering Procedure

A letter of request to conduct the study will be prepared. The

researchers will construct a questionnaire checklist, validated by

the teacher of the subject, then the questionnaire checklists will

be distributed. The researchers will conduct the research in Mount

Carmel School of San Luis through survey, through of the advantages


of the survey method. The researchers will explain to the

respondents the importance of their response to the study. The

researchers will clarify the unfamiliar terms to the respondents

so that the respondents can answer the questionnaire with full

knowledge of their responsibility as the subject of the study. The

researchers will request the respondents to answer with all

honesty. After the respondents answered the questionnaire, the

researchers will collect and tally the data for interpretation.

The researchers will ask a statistician help in determining the

appropriate statistical tools to be used and in interpreting the

data. Based on the data the researchers will come up with

conclusion and recommendation for this study.

Research Instrument

In this study, the researchers will be using the questionnaire.

The questionnaire is a set of orderly arranged questions carefully

prepared to be answered by the respondents to collect facts and

information. The first part of the questionnaire is their

demographic profile. The second part is the questions to be

answered by the respondents. The researchers will use Likert Scale


in the survey questionnaires to specify the level of agreement of

the respondents to the statement.

Research Locale

The study will be conducted in Mount Carmel School of San Luis

since the chosen respondents are students of this school.

Subjects

The respondents of this study were the selected students who

are using Wattpad application in Mount Carmel School of San Luis

that the age range from 13 to 18 years old.

Sampling Technique

The study will use Simple Random Sampling in determining the

samples of the study. According to Adam and Ariel (2019), Simple

Random Sampling ensures that results obtained from your sample

should approximate what would have been obtained if the entire

population had been measured. The Simple Random Sampling allows

all the units in the population to have an equal chance of being

selected.
