AFRICA
BUSINESS
DIRECTORY
Edition 2022
In this context, the AUC developed this Africa Business Directory document to
facilitate engagement among businesses within and outside the continent.
There is no doubt that the Africa Business Directory will be a useful instrument
in promoting trade and investment within the continent and between Africa
and the rest of the world. It will provide African businesses with the opportunity
to explore new sources of supply while at the same time giving overseas
companies an excellent opportunity to identify partners with whom to work to
promote their products and services on the continent.
It is my hope that with the availability of this important new resource, large
and small businesses will take advantage of it to improve the operations of
their enterprises. As support programs evolve, with new programs emerging
and some closing, this document will similarly be updated to present the
most up-to-date information.
It is, therefore, my pleasure to offer, on behalf of the African Union
Commission, this important information for businesses within and outside the
continent. We encourage all users, both small and large, to make full use of
this document, provide feedback to enhance it, and inform others about its
existence.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The supply of open and comprehensive information to any and all parties
interested in investing in or doing business on the African continent is given a
high priority by the African Union (AU). If there is not appropriate information
distribution and contact with trade partners and investors, then the outcomes
of the company's operations will not accurately represent the situation.
In light of this, the African Union Commission (AUC) established this Africa
Business Directory document with the intention of easing the process of
interaction between companies based on and operating outside of the
continent.
The Africa Business Directory was created in the first place to meet the needs
of worldwide exporters, importers, manufacturers, traders, service providers,
and merchants who are interested in establishing links with their business
counterparts in Africa.
There is no shadow of a doubt that the Africa Business Directory will prove to
be an effective tool in fostering commerce and investment across the African
continent as well as between Africa and the rest of the world. It will provide
businesses in Africa the option to investigate new sources of supply while at
the same time providing an ideal opportunity for businesses outside of Africa
to discover partners with whom they can engage to market their goods and
services on the African continent.
It is our sincere desire that both big and small firms, now that this significant
new resource is available to them, would make use of it in order to enhance
the operations of their own companies.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Africa, which is the second-largest continent in the globe and has a land area
of 30 million km2, is quickly being recognized as an important location for
doing business. Africa has become the world's sixth fastest-growing
continent with an average GDP growth rate of 3.7 percent in 2020. The
continent has a population of 1.333 billion people and a GDP of $2.58 trillion
(US$1,970 per capita GDP).
Africa has benefited from a time of extraordinary global demand, mainly from
the Asian nations of India and China, since natural resource exports account
for forty percent of the continent's total export revenues. The African continent
is home to around thirty percent of the world's total mineral reserves.
According to the World Bank's 2019 online Africa Overview report, four of
Africa's countries with the quickest expansion rates are also in the top 10
economies with the quickest expansion rates worldwide. Cote d'Ivoire (with a
GDP growth rate of 7.0 percent), Ethiopia (8.2 percent), Ghana (with a GDP
growth rate of 7.3 percent), Rwanda (with a GDP growth rate of 7.8 percent),
and Tanzania are among the African countries with the fastest-growing
economies (6.3 percent). Senegal's economy is one of the top 20 fastest-
growing in the world, increasing at 6.3 percent, which places it outside of the
top 10 countries with the fastest-growing economies.
The Africa Business Directory is divided into nine chapters. This chapter –
Introduction – describes the background against which the development of
the Africa Business Directory has taken place. It emphasizes a number of
trends, some of those inherently specific to the African context and others
generally applicable to the global trade and investment climate among
which we can mention: (i) the growing recognition of Africa as the place to be
in terms of Trade and Investment, (ii) the astonishing natural resources of
Africa is endowed with, (iii) the renewed pledge, by International

In Chapter 05, which is the most important part of this publication, a complete
assessment of the indicators of trade and investment in each of the 55
countries that make up the African Union is presented. In this chapter, a brief
overview of the countries is presented; this is followed by a summary of the
prevalent economy; the components of GDP are broken down and presented
in graphical form; trade and import-export are not left out and also benefit
from a graphical representation of the prevalent statistics; and finally, the
Pg. 6 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
In Chapter 06, we discuss the most significant partnerships that are currently
in operation between Africa and the rest of the globe. These include
relationships with countries and regions such as the Arab world, China,
Europe, India, Japan, South America, South Korea, Turkey, and the United
States of America.
This document's core lies within Chapter 08, which provides an exhaustive
and detailed listing of the Top 500 Businesses in Africa. From financial data to
contact and CEO details, every effort is made to provide you with the most
accurate picture possible of the current state of these African economic
powerhouses.
A conclusion to our discussion, which will take place in Chapter 07, will include
a synopsis of the material that we have been discussing up until this point.

2.1. Establishment
25 May 1963 – On 26 May 2001, the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was
legally transformed into the African Union (AU).
2.2. Background
In May 1963, 32 Heads of independent African States met in Addis Ababa
Ethiopia to sign the Charter creating Africa’s first post-independence
continental institution, The Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The OAU was
the manifestation of the pan-African vision for an Africa that was united, free
and in control of its own destiny and this was solemnised in the OAU Charter
in which the founding fathers recognised that freedom, equality, justice and
dignity were essential objectives for the achievement of the legitimate
aspirations of the African peoples and that there was a need to promote
understanding among Africa’s peoples and foster cooperation among
African states in response to the aspirations of Africans for brother-hood and
solidarity, in a larger unity transcending ethnic and national Differences. The
guiding philosophy was that of Pan-Africanism which centred on African
socialism and promoted African unity, the communal characteristic and
practices of African communities, and a drive to embrace Africa’s culture and
common heritage.
The main objectives of the OAU were to rid the continent of the remaining
vestiges of colonisation and apartheid; to promote unity and solidarity
amongst African States; to coordinate and intensify cooperation for
development; to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Member
States and to promote international cooperation. The OAU Charter spelled out
the purpose of the Organisation namely:
Through the OAU Coordinating Committee for the Liberation of Africa, the
Continent worked and spoke as one with undivided determination in forging
an international consensus in support of the liberation struggle and the fight
against apartheid. The OAU had provided an effective forum that enabled all
Member States to adopt coordinated positions on matters of common
concern to the continent in international fora and defend the interests of
Africa effectively.
2.3. Structure
In structure, the OAU began as one entity, whereas the AU, integrating itself
with the African Economic Community and building other structures, consists
of: the Assembly (determines common policies); the Executive Council
(coordinates and makes decisions on common policies); the Pan-African
Parliament (implements policies); the Court of Justice (ensures compliance
with the law); the Commission (the secretariat); the Permanent
Representatives Committee (assists the Executive Council); the Specialized
Technical Committees (assist the Executive Council in substantive matters);
the Economic, Social and Cultural Council; the Peace and Security Council
(makes decisions on prevention, management and resolution of conflicts);
and the Financial Institutions (consisting of the African Central Bank, the
African Monetary Fund, and the African Investment Bank).
Pg. 10 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
2.4. Verification
The AU mandated the Council of Ministers to take the necessary measures to
ensure the implementation of decisions and, in particular, to prepare the
constitutive legal text of the Union, taking into account the Charter of the OAU
and the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community. Under the
Constitutive Act of the OAU, Article 9 mandates that the Assembly composed
of OAU Heads of States and Governments, as the supreme organ of the union,
with the power to monitor the implementation of policies and decisions of the
union as well to ensure compliance by all Member States.
2.5. Compliance
The non-implementation of regulations and directives from the assembly
shall attract appropriate sanctions.
The pillars of the AEC are the “regional economic communities” or RECs.
Although having overlapping membership, today, the African Union
recognizes eight RECs. Additionally, African nations have developed a further
six regionally focused economic structures as well.
From 1992 to 1998, activities were suspended due to crisis within its member
States making its 4 priority fields even more important to follow. These are to:
develop capacities to maintain peace, security, and stability as essential
prerequisites for economic and social development; develop physical,
economic and monetary integration; develop a culture of human integration;
and establish an autonomous financing mechanism for ECCAS.
Its Treaty guides the works of the EAC. The Treaty for the Establishment of the
East African Community was signed in November 1999 and entered into force
in July 2000 following the conclusion of the process of its ratification by all
three original Partner States – Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The regional
cooperation and integration envisaged in the EAC is broad based, as stated
in Article 5(1) of the Treaty: “The objectives of the Community shall be to
develop policies and programmes aimed at widening and deepening
Pg. 13 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
The main Organs of the EAC are the Summit, the Council of Ministers, the Co-
ordinating Committee, the Sectoral Committees, the East African Court of
Justice, the East African Legislative Assembly and the Secretariat.
The East African Court of Justice (or simply, the Court) is the principal judicial
Organ of the Community and ensures adherence to the law in the
interpretation and application of compliance with the EAC Treaty. The East
African Legislative Assembly (EALA) is the Legislative Organ of the Community
and has a cardinal function to further EAC objectives, through its Legislative,
Representative and Oversight mandate.
Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda were founding Members of the EAC. Rwanda
and Burundi acceded to the EAC Treaty on 18 June 2007 and became full
Members of the Community on 1 July 2007. Both countries joined the EAC
Customs Union in July 2009. The Republic of South Sudan became the sixth
Member of the EAC on 15 August 2016, having acceded to the Treaty on 15 April
2016.
The East African Community is led by its long-term objective Vision 2050. The
EAC has set out to define a clear long-term vision that will inspire all
stakeholders towards a common development trajectory. The rationale for
the Vision 2050 is to provide a catalyst for the region to enhance
transformation for growth and development and move the community to a

The Arab Maghreb Union has a GDP of US$425.7 billion and a population of 92
million. In addition to the Treaty forming AMU, the Marrakesh Summit adopted
the Solemn Declaration on the establishment of AMU and its work program.
The Arab Maghreb Union objectives were established to:
Pg. 15 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
• Strengthen the ties of brotherhood which link the member States and
their peoples to one another;
• Achieving progress and prosperity of their societies and defending
their rights;
• Contributing to the preservation of peace based on justice and equity;
• Pursuing a common policy in different domains; and
• Working gradually towards achieving free movement of persons and
transfer of services, goods, and capital among them.
The SADC has 16 member states that include Angola, Botswana, the
Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Lesotho, Madagascar (that was
suspended in March 2009 after a coup d’état), Malawi, Mozambique,
Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and
Zimbabwe. The 38th Ordinary SADC Summit in August 2018 noted that the
Union of Comoros has deposited its Instrument of Accession, becoming the
16th full Member of SADC.
The main policy making organ is the Summit of Heads of State or Government.
The policies are implemented through decisions adopted by the Council of
Ministers. Since its inception, SADC has constantly engaged in developing
policies and strategies in the different areas of regional cooperation and
integration, aimed at achieving the objectives contained in its Common
Agenda (Article 5 of the Treaty). These strategies and policies have been
consolidated into sectoral strategy papers, Memoranda of Understanding
(MOUs) and Protocols, which are key to the process of Community building.
The SADC Treaty, signed in August 1992 and amended in 2001, 2007, 2008 and
2009, is the constitutive document establishing SADC and the framework from
which all subsequent instruments are derived. It sets out the main objectives
of SADC – to achieve development and economic growth, alleviate poverty,
enhance the standard and quality of life of the peoples of Southern Africa and
support the socially disadvantaged through regional integration. All the

With the independence of Namibia in 1990 and the end of apartheid in South
Africa in 1994, SACU members embarked on new negotiations in November
1994, which culminated in a new SACU Agreement in 2002. The SACU
Agreement, 2002 addressed the following three outstanding issues:
ECOWAS established its free trade area in 1990 and adopted a common
external tariff in January 2015.The aims of the Community are to promote co-
operation and integration, leading to the establishment of an economic union
in West Africa in order to raise the living standards of its peoples, and to
maintain and enhance economic stability, foster relations-among Member
States and contribute to the progress and development of the African
Continent.
In 2000, ECOWAS members formed the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ)
aiming to establish a strong stable currency, “eco”, to rival the CFA franc,
whose exchange rate is tied to that of the euro and is guaranteed by the
French Treasury. In 2020 the eventual goal is for the Eco to become West and

Central Africa’s a single stable currency. The launch of the new currency is
being prepared by the West African Monetary Institute based in Accra, Ghana.
This is intended to be the forerunner of a common central bank.

The World Bank’s 2019 online Africa Overview noted that four of the fastest-
growing economies in Africa are in the top 10 fastest growing in the world. The
fastest-growing African nations include (GDP growth in brackets): Cote
d’Ivoire (7.0%); Ethiopia (8.2%); Ghana (7.3%); Rwanda (7.8%); Tanzania (6.3%).
Beyond the top 10 fastest growing economies in the world, Senegal (6.3%)
features within the top 20 fastest-growing nations.
As 40% of the continent’s export earnings come from natural resource exports,
Africa has benefitted from a period of unprecedented global demand,
particularly from the Asian countries of India and China. 30% of the world’s
mineral resources come from the African continent.
the largest country in the world) and China(with a projected population of 1.3
billion).
The continent’s economic growth has also been fueled by internal consumer
growth from its fast urbanizing and expanding middle class. By 2030, when
the Continental Free Trade Area is fully implemented, as many as 1.7 billion
Africans will be integrated into the consumer goods market. As a result, in
addition to natural resources, banking, telecommunications, and
infrastructure expenditures have emerged as key drivers of the African
aggregate economy. The growth rate of these sectors is rising significantly
faster in Africa than in the world as a whole.
Indeed, U.N. projections forecast that by 2030, there will be 759.4 million
African urban dwellers – more than today’s total number of city dwellers in
the entire Western hemisphere. By 2050, there will be more than 1.2 billion
African city dwellers, or more people living in African cities than the combined
urban and rural populations of the Western hemisphere.
the leading regional economic centers in West Africa (first with 70,000
business launched annually); Southern Africa (second with 70,000 business
launched annually); and East Africa (third with 22,000 business launched
annually).
It is hoped that the signing of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement
(AfCFTA) will increase intra-regional trade from the current 18% to 60%.

Pg. 24 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
4.1. Agribusiness
Africa’s economies have mostly been agrarian-based societies since
independence. Despite this fact, only 6% of the continent’s land is arable as
there are large deserts in North and Southern Africa. Agriculture contributes
two-thirds of the continent’s employment and accounts for 30% of the value
of its exports.
Animal husbandry is also a very important activity across Africa, but the
maximization of using animals to farm is thwarted by the fact that historically
cultivating communities in Africa (Kikuyu in Kenya, Hausa in Nigeria) have not
lived alongside herdsman (Masai in Kenya, Fulani in Nigeria).
Rice has become a major staple in Africa’s urban areas, and as such demand
and production have also risen significantly over the past decade. Millet and
sorghum are also produced but principally in the savanna region. Rice
production and consumption have become increasingly important and are
associated with areas of rapid urbanization. The most important rice-
producing countries are located predominantly in West Africa – Cote d’Ivoire,
Liberia, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. In other parts
of Africa, Egypt, Madagascar, and Tanzania are also important rice producers.
Wheat production has spread across the savanna region of Africa, including
parts of northern Nigeria, and is most actively produced in Southern
(particularly South Africa) and North Africa and upcountry in Kenya and
Ethiopia in Eastern Africa.
4.1.9. Poultry
Poultry production exists almost everywhere on the African continent,
although Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa and Sudan are countries
with the greatest level of activity. Namibia, South Africa, Botswana and
Zimbabwe have a growing contingent of ostrich farmers.
4.1.10. Fish
Africa has abundant oceanic and freshwater resources. The continent has
significant inland waterways and 38 of the continent’s 55 countries have
access to the ocean. Fishing is a very important activity all over Africa.
Commercial fishing on the continent’s oceans is however not practiced
universally. Key countries where fishing forms a prominent part of economic
activity include Angola, Ghana, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria and Senegal.
Countries with well-developed inland fisheries include Chad, Cote d’Ivoire,
Mali, Malawi, and Uganda.
Given the strong need for food security, job creation, and optimal land
utilization, it is forecast that the focus on improving agricultural techniques
/technology and agribusiness development plans over the medium to long
term can assist with this. Also, by the year 2030. It is estimated that the African
agricultural sector will be worth US$1 trillion.
4.2. Automotive
Africa continues to position itself as a vehicle OEM and vehicle component
assembly platform for the global automobile industry. Despite a low
motorization rate on the continent of only 44 vehicles per 1 000 inhabitants,
the sector has significant potential. The global average in terms of
motorization rate is 180 vehicles per 1 000 inhabitants, and Africa’s rate
remains lower than other developing regions such as Latin America (176) and
Developing Asia, Oceania and the Middle East (79). By 2015, approximately
1.55 million new vehicles were sold or registered across Africa. South Africa,
Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco – all countries with established and rapidly
developing automotive industries – together accounted for more than 80% of
total new vehicle sales in 2015. Based on recent sales trends, some sources
estimate that Africa’s passenger vehicle sales could reach up to 10 million
units per annum within the next 15 years.
Europe and Japan. The Middle East serves as a notable transit route for
vehicles into East Africa.
In Africa, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria have sizeable
automotive assembly and manufacturing sectors. Domestic vehicle
production and assembly may have substantial multiplier effects for African
economies and could act as a driver for industrialization and economic
diversification. This has positioned the automotive industry as an attractive
option for policymakers as it can boost local manufacturing, reduce
unemployment as well as diversify export revenue sources.
4.3. Aviation
Africa comprises 2.2% of the global market in terms of Revenue Passenger
Kilometers (RPK). According to Boeing’s recent Market Outlook, to service the
continent over the next 20 years, 1190 new aircraft with an expected value of
$170 billion will be needed.
very well – despite the poor general economic performances of the two
biggest economies, South Africa and Nigeria.
A key factor in the growth of the aviation industry on the continent is that
Africa is becoming an increasingly appealing investment destination. As the
population grows and the continent’s middle class expands, continental and
global investors are increasing their trip frequency to explore opportunities.
Aviation is due to be a huge beneficiary of Africa’s population and economic
growth.
North and East Africa have higher Lerner indices. This signals lower
competitive banking environments as compared to other African regions.
Foreign banks in those regions also have the least share of total banking
assets (24% and 58% respectively) and the lowest degree of asset
concentration among the top 5 banks (78%). However, Southern Africa is a
market with significantly less competition than other African regions. This is
due to high asset concentration among the top 5 banks (90%) and the
relatively large asset ownership of foreign banks (66%) making it harder to
conclude whether foreign presence increases or decreases competition in
the banking sector across the continent.
Major Western insurance firms have more recently begun to especially pay
attention to the increasingly attractive Sub-Saharan African insurance
industry.
In recent years, Zambia, Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda recorded some of the
highest growth rates within the insurance industry in Sub-Saharan Africa.
fact coupled with the strength of its banks demonstrate Egypt’s leadership in
this critical sector. With 26 million registered users, mobile money is a huge
contributor to Kenya’s role as an industry leader in Banking and Financial
Services.
The legacy of the early free-to-air and sometimes paid networks paved the
way for the formation of several private television stations to launch. Today
the African television market is primarily divided between English speaking (or
Anglophone Africa) and French-speaking (or Francophone Africa).
Pg. 36 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
revenues they collect as compensation for their services and remit the
balances to Multichoice.
Although ARPUs are much lower than in South Africa, leading to lower
revenues, Nigeria may increasingly be an investment focus for operators due
to its size (22% of all African TV Households are in Nigeria), low TV household
penetration, and its rapidly growing middle-class segment that has
disposable income for entertainment services.
As a sector, the Transport sector has 186 projects (22.7% of total project value),
followed by power and energy projects (with a share of 24.4% of the total
project value).
value at USD 79.2 billion. In Algeria, 99% of residents have electricity, 97% have
piped water and 95% have sewerage – the highest percentage of any African
country. To grow and maintain this, the government has mandated a USD 215
billion investment construction program with an emphasis on transport,
health and water infrastructure. Based on reports by the Globe Newswire, the
building construction industry in Nigeria is expected to record a CAGR of 13.9%
to reach NGN 10,671.3 billion by 2024. The residential construction industry in
value terms increased at a CAGR of 4.2% during 2015-2019.
profile in Africa is also not helped by the fact that roughly 60% of all Africans
live in rural areas and are engaged in subsistence farming. School-age
children in these environments are also part of the expected labour pool of
rural African families and as such many do not complete primary school as
they are required by their families to work their land.
Many departments do not have more than 1 or 2 senior professors and many
who are there are close to the retirement age. This prevents departments and
universities from being able to provide relevant higher education training and
to be able to establish vibrant research environments. Moreover, low salaries
of faculty, lack of research funding and equipment, as well as limited
autonomy provide disincentives for professors to stay in African universities.
Academic disruptions due to strikes by staff and/or students arising from a
number of factors including poor administrative leadership and lack of
resources are other challenges confronting African higher education.
Pg. 44 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
With respect to highest ranking tertiary institutions in Africa, Egypt and South
Africa are the two-best represented countries. Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, and
South Africa all have universities in the top 500 of the global ranking.
This indicates that governments are not meeting public demand in areas
such as health care, education, justice, safety, and security. The Ibrahim Index
of African Governance (IIAG) recognizes progress in overall governance
Pg. 45 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
across Africa, and has noted a decline in the provision of core public services.
Education, for instance, shows a concerning trajectory.
Yet, public services do not work in isolation. The public and private sectors,
together with civil society, are increasingly involved in delivering services to
citizens. In particular, there is a growing role of local authorities and public-
private partnerships in delivering public services. Today, the 20 biggest cities
on the continent manage populations larger than many countries. In cities
such as Kampala and Johannesburg, a new generation of mayors, supported
by teams of young and motivated Africans, are offering examples of
modernising public services that engage with cross-sections of society.
Pg. 46 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
4.9. Healthcare
At the end of the colonial era in the 1960s, African nations began significant
efforts to bolster their healthcare systems and particularly under the
mandate of public health development to extend the reach of medical
facilities and services into their rural areas. Spending on health (and
education) as a percentage of the annual budgets of these nations was
relatively robust. These activities were supported by the United Nation’s World
Health Organization which prompted a community-focused approach to
healthcare and advocated that comprehensive healthcare was a basic right
and a responsibility of government.
However, much of this effort began to be undone in the 1990s when economic
crisis across the continent ushered in the era of the World Bank and IMF loans.
The need to borrow meant that African states began to lose control over the
ability to set their own domestic spending agendas. The “structural
adjustment” lending requirements within the loan agreements mandated
Pg. 47 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
that African borrowers spend less on social services, including health and
education.
With decreased public spending domestically and very weak private sectors,
the social services net which had been historically provided by the
government began to fall. This led, and today continues to lead, to increased
poverty on the continent-and poverty, in turn, has led to increased health
challenges- particularly regarding communicable diseases.
The levels of healthy life in the African Region remain much lower than the rest
of the world. The Region is the only WHO region with a healthy life expectancy
under 60 (52.3 years as compared to the next lowest, the Eastern
Pg. 48 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
Mediterranean Region, at 60.1 years). The African Region has a 16.4-year gap
in healthy life as compared to the Western Pacific Region, the best performing
region globally, representing a major disparity for its population.
Similarly, the levels of mortality are also getting lower, with an average crude
death rate due to the top 10 causes of mortality falling from 87.7 to 51.3 per 100
000 population. As with morbidity, the reductions in crude death rate were
most significant in the same three communicable conditions: Malaria (66%
reduction); HIV/AIDS (57% reduction) and diarrhoeal diseases (52%
reduction). Again, the reductions in mortality are least with non-
communicable conditions, led by road injuries (1% reduction), ischaemic
heart disease (2% reduction) and stroke (3% reduction). This reinforces the
need for countries to scale up interventions to reduce mortality associated
with non-communicable conditions.
infectious agent, ranking above HIV/AIDS. In 2017, 2.5 million people fell ill with
TB in the African region, accounting for a quarter of new TB cases worldwide.
In the case of Malaria, 219 million cases of malaria worldwide were estimated
in 2017. Of all cases reported, 92% of global cases were in the WHO African
Region– an estimated 200 million cases. In 2017, five countries accounted for
nearly half of all malaria cases worldwide. Four of them are in Africa, these
namely are Nigeria (25%), Democratic Republic of Congo (11%), Mozambique
(5%), and Uganda (4%). Through the efforts of WHO, 505 million of the nets
were destined for Sub-Saharan Africa. Household ownership of at least one
such net increased from 50% in 2010 to 80% in 2016 across Sub-Saharan Africa.
more people online. This will require exceptional and coordinated efforts from
governments, the private sector, development partners, and civil society, the
report says, but the investment is worth it.
4.11. Manufacturing
t has long been proven that value-added production is the key to economic
development. Manufacturing creates jobs, jobs fuel spending and spending
fuels the economy. In Africa, the colonial era legacy of a region that primarily
supplied natural resources has been hard to shake off. In addition, the
relatively small markets (20 countries with less than 10 million inhabitants),
inhibits mass production and offers small markets and a relatively small
labour pool.
4.11.4. Petrochemicals
Petrochemicals are heavily produced in Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Libya,
Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia and Zimbabwe.
4.11.5. Cement
Algeria and South Africa are the continent largest cement producers.
4.11.6. Textiles/Apparels
Textiles/apparels are heavily produced in Mauritius, Lesotho, South Africa,
Kenya, Zimbabwe, Egypt, and Nigeria.
4.11.7. Food/Beverages
South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt, Nigeria, and Cote d’Ivoire appears as the
top producers of food/beverages.
4.11.8. Furniture
Furniture are heavily produced in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Algeria, Egypt,
and Ghana.

In addition to the economic challenges the sector is facing, South Africa also
faces the challenges associated with an aging mining sector. Industrial
mining has been taking place for around 120 years and subsequently,
activities in some areas now reach depths of over 4,000 meters. Not only does
this present operational challenges, but the hazards of operating so deep
present significant risks to human life. In South Africa, the potential to have
the largest impact is through increasing the amount of productivity in deep
underground mines.
East and Central Africa have not been immune from the rising tide of
protectionism around the globe, and the implementation of restrictive trade
policies in Tanzania has created an uncertain investment environment there.
Further jurisdictional uncertainties have impacted investor security in other
East African nations such as Kenya. Despite this, rebounding prices have
played a role in generating interest in this prospective and under-exploited
region.
In general, the value of the resources sector as a driver for regional socio-
economic development is well understood by the region’s nations. As
commodity prices continue to rise, initiatives to promote the vast mineral
potential of the region abound and key projects to support improved
infrastructure and labor capacity are underway.
Kenya, a relatively new mining jurisdiction, has launched a gold project with
the resource believed to likely surpass 1.3 million ounces of gold. Goldplat’s
Kilimapesa mine, the country’s largest gold operation, recently
commissioned a new crushing plant, and a highly anticipated airborne
survey of Kenya will provide investors with more data.
the highest grades in the world. While the global average falls between 0.6%
– 0.8%, some of the country’s mines are estimated to contain grades higher
than 3%.
Endeavour Mining recently confirmed it had added over 260,000 oz. of gold to
its proved resource at its Karma gold mine thereby extending its mine life
more than 10 years. Meanwhile, major gold producer IAMGOLD announced the
installation of a 15-megawatt solar power plant at its Essakane mine, which is
the largest hybrid diesel solar photovoltaic project in the world.
With an estimated 822 tons of gold reserves, Mali remains a hotspot for gold
mining companies worldwide. Largely due to developments from Randgold’s
Loulo-Gounkoto complex and the Morila mine, the country has managed to
increase its reserves significantly in the past few years. Although the security
situation in the north of the country has overshadowed developments in the
industry, Mali’s mining sector has ultimately experienced very eventful years
recently.
While Ghana remains a strong favorite of investors, Senegal, Guinea, and Ivory
Coast are the newest players to see considerable interest West Africa. Guinea
(Bauxite) is also a country in which increased investment in the mining sector
is occurring. In Senegal, several explorers and developers, such as Bassari
Resources, are gearing up to begin production. The ASX-listed gold developer
is slated to begin awarding contracts for its Makabiungui gold project.
Pg. 59 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
Mining in Cote d’Ivoire has been growing in the last few years and continues
to scale into what will likely be one of the most productive places to mine gold
in Africa. Production almost doubled between 2013 and 2015 alone, jumping
from 13 tonnes to 23.5 tonnes of gold. Private industry and the Ivorian
government aim to hit a target of at least 30 tonnes by 2020.
The Middle East and North Africa jointly hold more than 30% of global mineral
reserves. Despite this, the region severely lacks exploration and resource
development investment. The region is globally important for phosphate
production.
For centuries, mining has been one of Morocco’s most practiced economic
activities. Moroccan mining technologies, like copper works and steel
manufacturing, were exported abroad, particularly to Europe. Morocco is
particularly strong in manganese, iron, zinc, lead, phosphate, silver, zinc,
cobalt, copper, fluorine, lead, barite, iron-ore and anthracite.
Egypt is also a resource-rich region and as stability returns and more efforts
are made to improve the overall investment climate, mining will pick up.
To increase revenue and expand the country’s overall economy, the Ministry
of Petroleum’s Mineral Resources Authority is looking to offer several
international bids for mineral exploration sites, particularly in the gold sector.
Aside from the country’s stellar gold deposits on offer, estimated at 6.7-million

4.14. Telecommunications
Although Africa today remains the least connected continent in the world,
from having 12% of the world’s population and 3% of phone lines at the turn of
the millennium, the continent has made significant strides in improving its
connectivity.
million people. Regardless of these huge strides that have been made, mobile
subscriber penetration remains at about 44%, well behind a global average
of 66%.
While network operators have seen reduced revenue from roaming access,
this has generally been recouped from a sharp increase in international
traffic. A few countries within Africa retain incumbent monopolies for the
provision of services, while others have seen consolidation among players
(largely due to operators such as Airtel and Tigo leaving certain markets, or
the failure of some poorly managed enterprises). In sum, though, there is
effective competition within the mobile sector across the region. This has also
encouraged competition for services based on upgraded technologies,
which in turn has encouraged investment. Africa remains the main region
globally for m-money and m-banking services, for example, and while there

economy has to grow at no less than 6% per annum. The economy in the last
few years has hovered at growth rates of less than 2%. The government has
halted the privatization of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and has imposed
restrictions on imports and foreign involvement in its economy. For the
Algerian economy to grow, a stabilization of SOEs will be required. Oil and
natural gas account for 95% of exports. Algeria has the 10th-largest reserves
of natural gas in the world and is the sixth-largest gas exporter. It ranks 16th
in oil reserves. Thanks to strong hydrocarbon revenues, Algeria has a cushion
of $173 billion in foreign currency reserves and a large hydrocarbon
stabilization fund. In addition, Algeria's external debt is extremely low at about
2% of GDP.

of 2011, but has been growing since at a steady rate, until 2017. Inward
investment flows decreased by 8.2% between 2017 and 2018. FDI inflows in 2018
amount to $6,798 million USD. However, Egypt remains the largest FDI
recipient in Africa. Inflows are now oriented towards the oil and gas industry,
thanks to the discoveries of offshore gas reserves. The stock of FDI between
2017 and 2018 increased by 6%, reaching $116 billion USD (46.6% of GDP). Cairo
at the turn of the century aggressively pursued economic reforms to attract
foreign direct investment and facilitate GDP growth. Despite the relatively high
levels of economic growth in recent years, living conditions for the average
Egyptian remained poor and contributed to public discontent. Tourism,
manufacturing, and construction are among the hardest hit sectors of the
Egyptian economy, and economic growth is likely to remain steady for the
foreseeable future. Politically, post the Arab Spring, Egypt put up a new
constitution that put in place a civilian government. This has brought about
greater stability and a better outlook on the country’s economic prospects.

5.19. Eswatini
5.19.1. About
Eswatini (Swazi: eSwatini), officially the Kingdom of Eswatini and formerly
named Swaziland (officially renamed in 2018), is a landlocked country in
Southern Africa. It is bordered by Mozambique to its northeast and South
Africa to its north, west, south, and southeast. At no more than 200 kilometers
(120 mi) north to south and 130 kilometers (81 mi) east to west, Eswatini is one
of the smallest countries in Africa; despite this, its climate and topography are
diverse, ranging from a cool and mountainous highveld to a hot and dry
lowveld.

Containment and Relief (CCR) as of 2015. Since 2015 the fiscal position
(excluding financial sector-related costs) has continued to improve in 2018,
despite persistent revenue collection challenges; and the current account
deficit was lower than anticipated. The Bank of Ghana resolved nine insolvent
banks over a period of 18 months, in line with its commitment to clean up the
banking sector; and structural reforms to strengthen public financial
management and oversight of the state-owned enterprises have continued.
Ghana has a fairly stable government and for the country to continue on its
growth trajectory, maintaining and ensuring sound macro-economic
management will be key.

5.29. Libya
5.29.1. About
Libya, officially the State of Libya (Arabic: دولة ليبيا, romanized: Dawlat Lībiyā), is
a country in the Maghreb region in North Africa. It is bordered by the
Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast,
Chad to the south, Niger to the southwest, Algeria to the west, and Tunisia to
the northwest. Libya is made of three historical regions: Tripolitania, Fezzan,
and Cyrenaica. With an area of almost 700,000 square miles (1.8 million km2),
it is the fourth-largest country in Africa and the Arab world, and the 16th-
largest in the world. Libya has the 10th-largest proven oil reserves in the world.
The largest city and capital, Tripoli, is located in western Libya and contains
over three million of Libya's seven million people.

has a long term ambition of reaching its pre-2011 quota of at least 1.6 million
BPD. Libya currently produces about 1.3 million BPD of crude oil, but NOC has
plans to boost this considerably. Libya faces a long road ahead in liberalizing
its primarily socialist economy, but the revolution probably increases the
opportunity for entrepreneurial activity and the evolution of a more market-
based economy. The service and construction sectors, which account for
roughly 20% of GDP, expanded over the past five years and could become a
larger share of GDP after political volatility subsides. Climatic conditions and
poor soils severely limit agricultural output, and Libya imports about 75% of its
food. Libya's primary agricultural water source remains the Great Manmade
River Project, but significant resources will be needed in desalinization to meet
growing water demands.

visibly illustrated by a new port and free trade zone near Tangier - are
improving Morocco's competitiveness. In the 1980s, Morocco was a heavily
indebted country before pursuing austerity measures and pro-market
reforms, overseen by the IMF. Since taking the throne in 1999, King MOHAMMED
VI has presided over a stable economy marked by steady growth, low
inflation, and gradually falling unemployment, although poor harvests and
economic difficulties in Europe contributed to an economic slowdown. To
boost exports, Morocco entered into a bilateral Free Trade Agreement with the
US in 2006 and an Advanced Status agreement with the EU in 2008. In late
2014, Morocco eliminated subsidies for gasoline, diesel, and fuel oil,
dramatically reducing outlays that weighed on the country’s budget and
current account. Subsidies on butane gas and certain food products remain
in place. Morocco also seeks to expand its renewable energy capacity with
the goal of making renewable more than 50% of installed electricity
generation capacity by 2030. Despite Morocco's economic progress, the
country suffers from high unemployment, poverty, and illiteracy, particularly
in rural areas. Key economic challenges for Morocco include reforming the
education system and the judiciary.

members of the West African Monetary Union. At the turn of the century, Niger
qualified for enhanced debt relief under the International Monetary Fund
program for Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) and concluded an
agreement with the Fund on a Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility (PRGF).
basic health care, primary education, HIV/AIDS prevention, rural
infrastructure, and other programs geared at poverty reduction. The future
growth of Niger will be sustained by the exploitation of oil, gold, coal, and other
mineral resources. If Niger is to continue its growth it will have to invest in more
infrastructure that will enable it to exploit its resources. Recently Niger
announced a planned Niger Chad Oil Pipeline. The government of Niger and
China are also set to build a 2,000-kilometer, $4.5 billion USD pipeline to carry
crude oil from southeast Niger to the port of Seme in Benin. It is believed these
infrastructure projects will enable the country to have an alternate route of its
crude oil. Until recently crude oil has left Niger via Chad to a port in Cameroon,
but deadly jihadist attacks in Nigeria have spilled over the border and hence
Niger has to find an alternative route for its oil. Niger’s political landscape is
fairly stable, after being subjected to a series of coups following its
independence from France in 1960, the country has at times been under a
military government. Since the universal recognition of a constitution in 2010,
the country has been under civilian rule. In spite of these basic rights issues,
such as slavery - which was only banned in 2003, these still remain a problem
for the state. Niger has become noted as a major transit route for migrants
heading to Europe

2008 began pursuing economic reforms. Nigeria's former military rulers failed
to diversify the economy away from its overdependence on the capital-
intensive oil sector, which as of 2018 accounted for 81.1% of exports. It is
estimated that with Nigeria’s production cap of 800 million barrels per year,
each Nigerian citizen can on average be allocated 4 barrels. This is implying
that if the price of crude oil is a conservative $45, this would equate to about
$180 per person per year for each citizen. Global poverty projections released
by The Brookings Institution in 2018 show that Nigeria has overtaken India as
home to the largest population of people living in extreme poverty, with 87
million citizens living on less than $1.90 a day. Nigeria has over the years
received debt relief from various agencies. Since 2008 the government has
begun to show the political will to implement the market-oriented reforms
urged by the IMF, such as modernizing the banking system, removing
subsidies, and resolving regional disputes over the distribution of earnings
from the oil industry. The government is working toward developing stronger
public-private partnerships for roads, agriculture, and power. If Nigeria is to
fulfill its potential it will have to continue making the structural adjustments
that many oil countries make. Modernizing agriculture, focusing on tourism
and promoting entrepreneurship will go a long way in seeing the country
reach its goals. Nigeria’s political situation is fairly stable, to maintain stability
the country will need to address its poverty challenges as well as deal with
the Boko Haram insurgents.

country is also working on iron ore and oil exploration projects. In January
1994, Senegal undertook a bold and ambitious economic reform program
with the support of the international donor community. Government price
controls and subsidies have been steadily dismantled. After seeing its
economy contract by 2.1% in 1993, Senegal made an important turnaround,
thanks to the reform program, with real growth in GDP averaging over 5%
annually during the period from 1995-2007. Annual inflation had been pushed
down to the single digits. The country was adversely affected by the global
economic downturn in 2008 when GDP growth fell to 2.2%. As of the end of
2018, Senegal’s GDP was $23.50 billion USD and services contributed 62.2% of
this figure. As a member of the West African Economic and Monetary Union,
Senegal is working toward greater regional integration with a unified external
tariff and a more stable monetary policy. High unemployment, however,
continues to prompt migrants to flee Senegal in search of better job
opportunities in Europe. Under the IMF's Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC)
debt relief program, Senegal benefited from the eradication of two-thirds of
its bilateral, multilateral, and private-sector debt. In 2007, Senegal and the IMF
agreed to a new, non-disbursing, Policy Support Initiative program. The IMF
approved a new three-year policy support instrument in December 2010 to
assist with economic reforms. Senegal receives disbursements from the $540
million Millennium Challenge Account compact it signed in September 2009
for infrastructure and agriculture development. In 2010, the Senegalese
people protested against frequent power cuts. The government pledged to
expand power capacity by 2012 and to promote renewable energy, but until
Senegal has more capacity, more protests are likely. Foreign investment in
Senegal is retarded by Senegal's unfriendly business environment. The
country ranks 141st out of 190 countries in the ease of doing business.
Politically, Senegal is a stable democracy with 3 major political transitions
since its independence in 1960. If Senegal is to fulfill its potential, maintaining
this peace will be key as well as integrating the country’s youthful population
into the mainstream economy will be critical.

continued to grow. Politically Somalia remains severely challenged by what
many dub as the Somalian crisis. The Somalian crisis is the result of prolonged
drought, violence and insecurity. Consecutive years of poor rains and
harvests have decimated crops across Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and
Kenya. Famine was last declared in Somalia six years ago, and more than
260,000 people died – more than half of them being children. In addition to
the draught, the Somalian civil war has also contributed to the flight of
millions of Somali as well as the formation of splinter cell groups such as Al
Shabaab.

problems remain from the apartheid era - especially with regards to the
economic disparities that exist within the previously disadvantaged groups of
South Africa. Poverty, lack of economic empowerment among the
disadvantaged groups, and a shortage of public transportation. South
Africa's economic policy is fiscally conservative focusing on controlling
inflation and attaining a budget surplus. The current government largely
follows these prudent policies but must contend with the impact of the global
crisis and is facing growing pressure from special interest groups to use
state-owned enterprises to deliver basic services to low-income areas and
to increase job growth. South Africa has a fairly stable democracy and has
strong institutions that safeguard its democracy. What has become a
deterrent to the country’s continued growth is rampant corruption, which the
current administration hopes to tackle. The current administration is making
social and economic reforms to reposition South Africa as a regional
economic hub.

South Sudan's central bank issued a new currency, the South Sudanese
Pound, allowing a short grace period for turning in the old currency. Long term
problems include alleviating poverty, maintaining macroeconomic stability,
improving tax collection and financial management, focusing resources on
speeding growth, and improving the business environment. In terms of
politics and governance, the country requires stability at this level. The South
Sudanese civil war that has been ongoing from 2013 is a deterrent to
development in the country and more than 4 million people have been
displaced.

increases in oil production, high oil prices, and significant inflows of foreign
direct investment. Following South Sudan’s secession, Sudan has struggled to
maintain economic stability, because oil earnings now provide a far lower
share of the country’s need for hard currency and for budget revenues. Sudan
is attempting to generate new sources of revenues, such as from gold mining
while carrying out an austerity program to reduce expenditures. Services and
utilities have played an increasingly important role in the economy.
Agricultural production continues to employ 80% of the workforce and
contributes a third of GDP. Sudan introduced a new currency, still called the
Sudanese pound, following South Sudan's secession, but the value of the
currency has fallen since its introduction and shortages of foreign exchange
continue. Sudan also faces rising inflation, which has led to a number of small
scale protests in Khartoum in recent months. Ongoing conflicts in Southern
Kordofan, Darfur, and the Blue Nile state, lack of basic infrastructure in large
areas, and reliance by much of the population on subsistence agriculture
ensure that much of the population will remain at or below the poverty line
for years to come. Politically, in 2019 the military deposed its president on the
grounds of corruption and human rights valuation. The military set up a
Transitional Council that would take Sudan through a two-year transition to
civilian rule, but opposition groups demanded a quicker transfer, and the
African Union and Ethiopia negotiated a power-sharing deal that put a joint
civilian-military government in place in September 2019.

6.2. China
The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation is an official forum between the
People’s Republic of China and all states in Africa (with the exception of the
Kingdom of Eswatini). The forum is a platform to promote diplomatic, trade,
security and investment relations between China and African countries and
it provides the integrated framework governing China-African relations.
6.4. India
India and Africa have strong economic, cultural and historic ties. The Africa-
India Strategic Partnership was launched in New Delhi, India during the first
Africa-India Summit held in 2008. The seven cooperation areas of the
partnership include: Economic Cooperation; Political Cooperation; Science;
Technology; Research & Development; Social Development & Capacity
Building; Health, Culture & Sports; Infrastructure, Energy & Environment; and
Media & Communication. In recent years India has emerged as Africa’s fourth
Pg. 460 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
largest trade partner behind China, EU and the USA while Africa has emerged
as India’s sixth largest trading partner behind EU, China, UAE, USA and the
ASEAN region.
6.5. Japan
The Africa Japan Partnership was established during the first Tokyo
International Conference on Africa’s Development (TICAD I), which was
convened on October 5-6, 1993 in Tokyo, Japan. TICAD, is organized by the
Government of Japan (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), the UN Office of the Special
Adviser for Africa, UNDP, the World Bank, and the African Union. TICAD has
been organized with the premise of promoting Africa’s development, peace
and security, through the strengthening of relations in multilateral
cooperation and partnership, particularly with Japan.
6.8. Turkey
The Africa-Turkey Partnership constitutes one of the prime orientations of
Turkish foreign policy. Being an Afro-Eurasian state, Turkey’s policy of opening
up to Africa is a reflection of a transient political and economic expectation.
It is, foremost, the expression and natural result of the firm feelings of
friendship and partnership between Turkish and African peoples. Turkey-
Africa relations have gained a substantial momentum since the declaration
of Turkey as a strategic partner of the Continent by the African Union in
January 2008.
We used the stock prices and currency exchange rates from January 19, 2022
to calculate the net worths. The list includes billionaires from seven African
nations. South Africa and Egypt have the most billionaires, each with five,
followed by Nigeria with three.

Key Facts:
His brothers Mohamed and Youssef are also billionaires and part
owners of Mansour Group.
This unique ranking by The Africa Report[7] has a total turnover of $590bn, a
decrease of 4.8% over the previous year. In absolute terms, we must return to
2016 to get a lower figure, precisely $569bn. Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa
all had currency challenges during the period. As for the 2012 peak of activity,
when the 500 businesses in the list generated a total of $757bn in revenue, it
will be several years before this is equaled, and much longer in a time of
international tensions caused by the Ukraine crisis.

Pg. 833 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
Pg. 834 Africa Business Directory - Ed. 2022
