_______________

Introduction:
Series and parallel circuit models help the students to understand the concept,
function, and advantages of electricity, resistance, and circuits. The model also helps to
understand how circuits work and how they can be made with material readily available at
home. In series, the circuit is closed where current flows in one path. Current passes
through each load are the same, and total voltage is the sum of voltages across a load.
Parallel, circuits have multiple branches of electric current, but the voltage across the load
is the same in a parallel circuit.

Objectives:
1. Understand the concepts of series and parallel connections.
2. Draw a circuit diagram of series and parallel circuits.
3. Create a series and parallel circuits incorporated in a miniature.

Instruction
In a ¼ illustration board, create a miniature building, house, etc. (any type of
infrastructure) and apply both a series and parallel circuits. Be creative as possible.
Afterward, draw a circuit diagram of the two electrical circuits you have in the miniature
you made. Attach it with your miniature. Answer the guide questions provided. Examples
are given below.
Materials

 9V battery  Connector
 LED bulb  Switch
 Resistance  Wire
 Wire tape

Procedure

Steps To Make Series Circuit

Step 1: Take 3 LED bulbs and connect them in a series connection to split the voltage.
Connect the positive terminal of one LED with the negative terminal of another LED using
wire tape.

Step 2: Connect the wire of the battery’s connector with the negative terminal of one LED
bulb.

Step 3: Now, connect the red wire with the positive terminal of the LED.
Step 4: Connect both red wires through a switch and connect the battery with the
connector.

Now, to test the series connection of the switch. Turn it on and you will see that LED bulbs
emit light.

Steps To Make Parallel Circuit

Step 1: Take 3 LED bulbs and connect the resistor with the negative leg of the LED. We are
using a resistor for voltage drop.

Step 2: Connect all three bulbs with resistors as well.

Step 3: Connect each resistor to a copper wire using a soldering iron (you can use wire tape
instead).

Step 4: Now, connect the switch to the copper wire in the positive leg direction.

Step 5: Next, connect the battery connector wire with the switch and directly connected to
the other wire in the negative direction.

Step 6: Next, connect the battery with the connector.

Now, to test the parallel circuit, turn on the switch you will see that LED bulbs glow.

Guide questions:
1. Compare and contrast a series circuit to a parallel circuit.

2. What is the science behind why even if there is more than one light bulb used with one
press of a switch the bulbs turned on?

3. Why is a parallel circuit better than a series circuit?

4. What challenges did you encounter while making the circuits?

1. A household electric iron has a resistance of 80.0. If 8.5 of current is flowing through
the resistance, how much voltage is available between the two terminals?
2. A circuit has a current of 45 and a voltage of 90, how much of the flowing current
was opposed?

3. What is the current produced by a 9 V battery flowing through a resistance of 200?

Part 2. Kirchhoff Laws

1. A series circuit with a total voltage of 45 V, has a 5 Ω (ohm) resistor, a 10 Ω resistor,
and a 7.5 Ω resistor. Find the total current of the circuit and apply Kirchhoff’s Current
Law (KCL). After that, get the voltage drops and apply Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL).
