7.3 Cell Phone Plan Comparison

The document outlines a 6th grade algebra project comparing four cell phone plans based on their base prices, minutes, data, and text costs. Students are tasked with calculating monthly bills for different texting and data usage scenarios, as well as determining the best plan based on individual texting habits. The project encourages the use of algebraic equations to analyze costs and make informed decisions.

Cell Phone Plan Comparison
Your parents have agreed to buy you a phone. However, you must calculate which cell phone
plan is the best deal.

Plan A Plan B Plan C Plan D

Base Price $60 $80 $99 $75

Minutes 450 600 900 550

minutes minutes minutes minutes
Data 3 gb 3 gb 3 gb 2 gb

Text $0.05 per $0.02 per $0.05 per $0.07 per

For each plan, consider the following

• For every 1 gb data over the amount allotted, you are assessed a $25 monthly fee.
• There is a 6% sales tax added to each monthly bill.

Questions to Answer:
1. What is your monthly cell phone bill cost for each plan in terms of t (texts)?
2. Given that you send 500 texts in a month, which plan is the cheapest? (Don’t forget to
include sales tax)
1. Set up algebraic equations for each plan.
3. One month, you spend a little too much time on Facebook and use a total
of 5 gb of data. You still send 500 texts in a month. Which plan would
be the cheapest in this scenario?
4. Rachel loves to talk on the phone but doesn’t text very often.
She sends an average of 100 texts per month. Which plan is
best for her? Why?
5. Marie texts a lot but her only phone calls are quick calls to
her parents to pick her up from school. Which plan is best
for her? Why?
6. How many texts would you need to send for Plan A and B to be
equal? Plan C and D?
7. Based on your own phone habits, which plan would you select and why? Create an
equation based on the number of texts you think you might send in a month.
