orthopedic tests

methods used to identify source of

musculoskeletal pain or
assign a diagnosis to patient symptoms
orthopedic tests pain from neck radiating down arm
orthopedic tests anterior shoulder/ posterior shoulder
orthopedic tests adduction of arm back into position by the side of the body mostly done
by SUPRASPINATUS
TESTS

bakody’s sign - tests for RADICULOPATHY in C4-C6

when there is shoulder neck pain to see if it goes away when
the Px abducts arm up and places hand on top of head. in this
position, if pain goes away it is interpreted as going away
because a nerve root was released momentarily.
RADICULOPATHY which is compression of a nerve root. this
is a proximal situation. NEUROPATHY is compression of
peripheral nerves limiting sensory information to the CNS.
neuropathy like an electrical outlet in a room not working.
radiculopathy like the fuse for the entire room is blown in the
fusebox.

tinels sign - tests for damage to the nerve in the wrist by

percussing PC7, center of palmar side wrist to elicit a buzzing
of tingling sensation in palm. method can be used on other
locations for other nerves. commonly used for carpel tunnel

phalens sign - tests for carpel tunnel syndrome by

practitioner holding Px hands in a position for 60 seconds to
see if that elicits pain or discomfort in the median nerve
orthopedic tests Below shows what flexion of the shoulder is. hawkins kennedy test
requires “flexion’ of shoulder & flexion of elbow

orthopedic tests
mcmurray test, px supine, knee flexed

(supine) mcmurray & thessaly (standing) =

meniscus knee
pivot shift = ACL
lachman = ACL 30 degree knee flex
anterior drawer = ACL 45 degree knee flex
(prone) appley compression = hurts more or
less movement, then meniscus
appley distraction = if this hurts more then
prolly ligaments

mcburney = appendix / murphy = gallbladder / mcmurray = meniscus

orthopedic tests APLEY KNEE

apley knee test, px prone, knee & foot

passively flexed, internal & external
rotation of foot done by practitioner. once
with weight applied to px plantar,
practitioner pressing while
rotating( grind test). Pain or discompfort
indicates miniscus cartliage

upward while rotaing inward/ outward. pain
or discomfort indicates the collateral
ligaments.

lateral injury

orthopedic tests

golfer/medial pain flexion

tenis / lateral pain extension

tenis elbow is overuse lateral side - lateral epicondyle slightly distal from
elbow into the muscle and tendon
orthopedic tests tinel’s method is looking to illicit paresthesia sensation distal to the
tapping

Tinel's sign (also Hoffmann-Tinel sign) is a way to detect irritated nerves. It is performed by lightly
tapping (percussing) over the nerve to elicit a sensation of tingling or "pins and needles" in the
distribution of the nerve. Percussion is usually performed moving distal to proximal.

frequently used to evaluate carpel tunnel dyndrome,

& morton’s neuroma
orthopedic tests appendicitis signs
CPT billing codes 10 first 15 min 1 on 1 contact
11 additional 15 min 1 on 1 contact
orthopedic tests enervation of hand and arm
root nerve damage assessment

MOTOR TEST
S1 tested by TOE WALK

L4 tested by HEEL WALK

L5 extend BIG TOE

orthopedic tests scapular winging

medial winging most common - LONG THORACIC NERVE

damaged, not innervating serratus anterior muscles to
pull the lower border anterior so scapula moves medial

lateral winging - spinal accessory nerve weak, so

trapezius not holding scapula
