Project Proposal:

Supporting Women and Girls in Overcoming Violence and Building

Empowerment

1. Executive Summary

Violence against women and girls remains a widespread problem with deep-rooted
social, economic, and psychological impacts. This project, “Supporting Women and
Girls in Overcoming Violence and Building Empowerment,” seeks to address this
critical issue by providing holistic support to survivors of gender-based violence
(GBV). The project aims to deliver a combination of direct services such as legal aid,
psychological support, and vocational training, while also engaging the broader
community through awareness campaigns and advocacy. Targeting marginalized
women and girls in rural and underserved urban areas, this initiative seeks to
empower individuals, strengthen local responses to violence, and promote gender
equality. By the end of the project, we expect to see a reduction in GBV rates,
increased awareness of women’s rights, and improved access to support services for
survivors.

2. Background and Rationale

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most pervasive human rights
violations worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO),
approximately one in three women will experience physical or sexual violence during
their lifetime. The consequences of such violence include long-term physical and
psychological harm, economic disadvantage, and social stigma. Despite the high
prevalence, many survivors of GBV continue to lack access to critical services, such
as legal aid, counseling, and economic support, particularly in rural and marginalized
communities.

This project aims to fill this gap by providing comprehensive support to women and
girls who have experienced violence. Through direct services and community-wide
interventions, we will help survivors rebuild their lives, empower them with the tools
they need for economic independence, and change the societal norms that perpetuate
violence. By focusing on prevention, response, and long-term empowerment, the
project aims to contribute to broader gender equality efforts and the sustainable
development goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and
empower all women and girls.

3. Objectives

The specific objectives of this project are:

1. Provide Comprehensive Support Services: Offer psychological counseling,

legal assistance, and emergency shelter for survivors of violence.

2. Empower Women and Girls: Provide life skills training, vocational

education, and leadership development to empower women and girls and reduce their
vulnerability to violence.

3. Strengthen Community Responses to Violence: Train community leaders,

healthcare workers, and local law enforcement on effective GBV prevention and
response strategies.

4. Raise Awareness on Gender-Based Violence: Conduct community outreach

programs to increase awareness about GBV and promote gender equality, focusing on
changing attitudes and behaviors.

5. Ensure Long-Term Impact and Sustainability: Develop a robust monitoring

framework to evaluate the success of the project, identify gaps, and inform future
interventions.

4. Target Beneficiaries
The primary beneficiaries of this project will be women and girls who have
experienced or are at risk of gender-based violence. This includes:
• Survivors of GBV: Women and girls who have experienced physical,
emotional, sexual, or psychological abuse, particularly those in rural or underserved
communities.

• At-Risk Women and Girls: Those vulnerable to GBV due to factors such as
economic dependency, lack of education, or involvement in marginalized groups.

• Community Leaders and Stakeholders: Local leaders, health workers, and

law enforcement personnel who will receive training on how to respond to and
prevent GBV.

5. Methodologies

This project will employ a community-based, multi-sectoral approach, combining

direct interventions with community education, advocacy, and institutional capacity
building. The following methodologies will be used:

1. Needs Assessment: Conduct baseline surveys and focus group discussions

with women, girls, and community leaders to understand the specific needs and
challenges faced by survivors of GBV.

2. Survivor Support Services: Establish safe spaces (shelters), provide legal aid,
and offer psychological counseling to survivors.

3. Skills Training and Empowerment: Deliver vocational training, financial

literacy, and leadership programs to women and girls, equipping them with skills to
gain financial independence.

4. Community Awareness and Education: Implement workshops, seminars, and

media campaigns to raise awareness about the rights of women and girls, and the need
to prevent and respond to GBV.

5. Training of Service Providers: Provide training to local law enforcement,

health workers, and social services personnel on gender-sensitive approaches to
handling cases of GBV.
6. Activities

The project will include the following key activities:

1. Baseline Surveys and Focus Groups: Initial surveys and interviews with
beneficiaries to assess their needs, perceptions, and attitudes toward GBV.

2. Establishment of Safe Spaces and Shelters: Create designated shelters for

survivors, offering a secure environment and immediate access to essential services.

3. Psychological Counseling and Legal Aid: Provide individual and group

counseling sessions, as well as access to legal services to help survivors navigate the
justice system.

4. Vocational and Skills Training: Organize workshops on vocational skills

(e.g., tailoring, carpentry, computing) and financial literacy to enhance survivors’
economic independence.

5. Community Workshops and Advocacy Campaigns: Conduct training sessions

for local leaders, law enforcement, and healthcare workers, as well as awareness
campaigns to educate communities about gender-based violence and women’s rights.

6. Monitoring and Evaluation: Regularly assess the effectiveness of the

interventions, including surveys and interviews with beneficiaries, to measure project
outcomes.

leaders, and stakeholders will provide qualitative insights.

• Activity Tracking: Monitoring attendance at training sessions, workshops,

and legal aid services to measure participation and engagement.

• Outcome Indicators: Track the number of survivors supported, legal cases

filed, women trained, and community awareness levels through periodic surveys.

The project’s impact will be assessed against predefined outcomes, and adjustments
will be made where necessary to ensure success.

10. Sustainability

Sustainability will be ensured by:

• Capacity Building: Training local leaders and service providers to ensure

long-term institutional responses to GBV.

• Community Ownership: Encouraging local ownership through community

involvement and engagement in awareness campaigns and advocacy efforts.

• Collaboration: Partnering with local governments, NGOs, and community

organizations to ensure continued support and resource availability.

• Economic Independence: Providing survivors with skills that can lead to

economic self-sufficiency, reducing their dependency on external aid.
11. Conclusion

This project will make significant strides in supporting women and girls in
overcoming the trauma of gender-based violence and empowering them to lead
independent, dignified lives. By combining survivor services, community education,
and institutional capacity building, the project aims to create lasting change in the
targeted communities. Through direct intervention and the promotion of gender
equality, we hope to contribute to a future where women and girls live free from
violence and discrimination.
