At present there are three modes of recruitment to the Indian Police Service. These are as follows:
Training
All the officers of Indian Police Service undergo probationary training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National
Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, and full-fledged training at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police
Academy, Hyderabad. Service will be confirmed after successful completion of probation. Besides this, IPS

officers also participate in mandatory Mid Career Trainings, spread across the entire service span.
During the training, the IPS Officers undergo rigorous training in various drill movements, weapon training,
firing, yoga, horse riding, rock climbing, swimming, unarmed combat, map reading and field craft and
tactics.
The training also involves inputs in Law, Constitution, Criminology, Psychology, Investigation, Forensic Science
and Medicine, Public Order Management, Principles of Leadership and Management, and Police Ethics,
Allocation of Cadre
Successful candidates of Civil Services Examination either by choice or by the overall rank allocated to the
Indian Police Service. Successfully trained officers will be further allocated to State Cadres/ Joint Cadres on
the basis of their rank, preference and availability of vacancies in their category at their turn in terms of
provisions of Cadre Allocation Policy of 2008. Officers recruited through promotions from State Police
Services remain in their State Cadres.
To fulfill duties based on border responsibilities, in the areas of maintenance of public peace and
order, crime prevention, investigation, and detection, collection of intelligence, VIP security, counter-
terrorism, border policing, railway policing, tackling smuggling, drug trafficking, economic offences,
Leading and commanding the Indian Intelligence Agencies like Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW),
Intelligence Bureau (IB), Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI), Criminal Investigation Department (CID)

Industrial Security Force (CISF), Vigilance Organisations, Indian Federal Law Enforcement Agencies.
