Short questions: (5 marks)

Q.1 Tarapada ran away after coming to know that he would be married to
Charushashi. “There was a pure and natural innocence in this runaway boy's
expression.” Do you consider this act of escaping as an act of an innocent boy?

(a) Tarapada's basic instincts should be included.


(b) Meaning of “innocence” as far as Tarapada's character is concerned. Knows
the reality of human existence. Not aware of reality of life without marriage.
He will enjoy the existence of a “guest” only.

Q.2 Discuss the various troupes that Tarapada joined. What was his behaviour
with different troupes and what did he learn from them?

Q.3 The cause of all human sufferings is the attachment with this world. As a
boy Tarapada was detached from this world. Do you think his nature was the
cause for his happy life? Elaborate giving examples from the text.

Q.3 Salvation should be the real motive of the human soul. Discuss with
reference to the short story Atithi/Guest.

Q.4 Atithi/ Guest embodies in its content the images of boat and the river. Does
these images have any significance as far as Tarapada’s behaviour is
concerned. Elaborate.

Q.6 Rabindranath Tagore has made use of the poetic prose to describe the
chatacters as well as nature. Elaborate giving examples from the text.

Q.7 Tarapada “ had returned to the unconstraining, unemotional arms of his


mother earth.” Explain keeping in mind the fact that human relationships are
demanding and sometimes restrict the partners. These relationships give pain
also. That’s why he chose mother earth to find solace.

Q.8 Do you think Tarapada and Charushashi were different from each other as
far as their characters are concerned? How both of them managed to balance
this difference in their behaviour?

Q.9 Atithi/Guest is a study of human relationships. Discuss giving examples


from the text.

Q.10 Tarapada has been depicted as a “water-god” and a “young sage in the
previous life”. The female characters in the story like Annapurna, Charushashi
and Sonamani were mesmerized by him and like the devotees started
worshipping him. Were they able to melt his heart with their worshipping? He
ran away. Was their devotion lacking in feelings? Elaborate.
