CHM 402 –Seminar – Spring 2025

Instructor: Dr. Siva Rasapalli

Office: Violette 203
srasapallli@umassd.edu

Class Meetings: Wednesday 4:00 - 5:15 PM, SENG105

Office Hours: By appointment
Scope and Objectives:
The objective of this course is to expose students to the frontiers of chemical and biochemical research. To
achieve this, experts in various fields of chemistry from academia, government and industry are invited to
give scientific presentations.
While attending these seminars, each student is encouraged to:
• Explore intellectually the various topics of chemistry and identify an area that seems the most
interesting to oneself.
• Recognize the pros and cons in giving a scientific presentation (judge the speaker on that).
• Challenge oneself as well as the speaker intellectually and ask the speaker question(s).
Grading:
The course is pass/fail. Attendance is required to receive credit. An online sign-up sheet will be shared in the chat
section of the zoom meeting at the beginning of each seminar – if your name is not on it, you did not attend. More
than two unexcused absences will result in a failing grade.
Additionally, to receive credit you will be required to write two reports (one to two pages) summarizing two
seminar of your choosing. You must include at least one reference (citation from primary literature, i.e., a journal
article) and demonstrate that you read the article authored by the speaker. You may use the citation format of any
reputable chemistry journal, an example is:
Zhang, H.; Zhou, G.; Zhong, J.; Shen, Z.; Shi, X., "Effect of nanomaterials and electrode configuration on soil consolidation
by electroosmosis: experimental and modeling studies," RSC Advances (2017) 7 (20), 12103-12112.

Note: Those who physically attend and mentally check out opening laptops/cell phones will not receive the attendance!

Note: Student seminars will be scheduled on those dates colored blue below. . Please let me know your preferred date for
presentation of your capstone research (you should have some meaningful research to be able to give a research
presentation!)
Students with disabilities:
In accordance with university policy, if you have a documented disability and require accommodations to obtain
equal access in this course, please meet with the instructor at the beginning of the semester and provide the
appropriate paperwork from the Center for Access and Success. The necessary paperwork is obtained when you
bring proper documentation to the Center, which is located in Pine Dale Hall, room 7136; phone: 508-999-8711.

Statement Regarding Title IX Information:
The purpose of a university is to disseminate information, as well as to explore a universe of ideas, to encourage
diverse perspectives and robust expression, and to foster the development of critical and analytical thinking skills.
In many classes, including this one, students and faculty examine and analyze challenging and controversial topics.
If a topic covered in this class triggers post-traumatic stress or other emotional distress, please discuss the matter
with the professor or seek out confidential resources available from the Counseling Center,
http://www.umassd.edu/counselling/, (508)999-8648 or -8650, or the Victim Advocate in the Center for Women,
Gender and Sexuality, http://www.umassd.edu/sexualviolence/, (508)910-4584. In an emergency contact the
Department of Public Safety at (508)999-9191 24 hrs/day.
UMass Dartmouth, following national guidance from the Office of Civil Rights, requires that faculty follow UMass
Dartmouth policy as a “mandated reporter” of any disclosure of sexual harassment, abuse, and/or violence shared
with the faculty member in person and/or via email. These disclosures include but are not limited to reports of
sexual assault, relational abuse, relational/domestic violence, and stalking. While faculty are often able to help
students locate appropriate channels of assistance on campus, disclosure by the student to the faculty member
requires that the faculty member inform the University’s Title IX Coordinator in the Office of Diversity, Equality
and Inclusion at (508)999-8008 to help ensure that the student’s safety and welfare is being addressed, even if the
student requests that the disclosure not be shared.
