TOP LEVEL PLAN SECTION

Jewel is a nature-themed entertainment and retail complex that blends a marketplace with a
lush, indoor paradise garden. The project was designed as an iconic lifestyle destination to
serve travellers, airport staff, and the public
BIM USES
FORM DEVELOPMENT

TORUS ELIPTICAL FINAL FORM

1. Torus Shape: The building’s form is based on the geometry of a torus, which allows for
a seamless integration of various functional spaces within the airport. This shape
accommodates multiple connections and pathways, enhancing the flow of movement
for passengers1.
2. Glass and Steel Dome: The iconic dome structure is made of glass and steel, creating a
visually striking and functional design. The glass panels allow natural light to flood the
SKETCH BY MOSHE interior while providing a clear view of the lush indoor gardens1.
SAFDIE 3. Rain Vortex: At the heart of the dome is the Rain Vortex, the world’s tallest indoor
waterfall. This feature not only serves as a stunning visual centerpiece but also helps
with cooling and airflow within the building1.
4. Forest Valley: The interior includes the Shiseido Forest Valley, a five-story indoor
garden that brings nature into the airport environment. This green space is designed to
offer a serene and relaxing atmosphere for travelers
MAINTENANCE STRATEGY & STIMULATION
BIM was also used to develop
maintenance strategies for the
airport.
By creating detailed models of the
building’s systems and
components, the team could plan
for future maintenance needs and
assess the operational impacts of
various activities, such as traffic WIND SPEED SIMULATION
planning and the sightline impacts
of construction cranes. RAIN VORTEX
SIMULATION

BIM was then used to define the

maintenance program and to plan
the impact of the construction site
on airport traffic, which remained
in operation during works.
Furthermore, it was also possible
to simulate the view impact of
construction cranes from the
control tower: before cranes were
mounted, BIM was used to ensure
that they did not obscure the
tower’s visibility on the airport TEMPERATURE SIMULATION

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
BIM software, including
AUTODESK REVIT and
SAP2000, was used extensively
for structural analysis. these tools
allowed engineers to create
detailed models and perform
simulations to test the structure’s
performance under various
scenarios
The structural analysis also
focused on the distribution of
loads across the building. This
included analyzing the impact of
the HSBC rain vortex, the world’s
tallest indoor waterfall, which
adds significant weight and
dynamic forces to the structure
GRID SHELL ROOF
STRUCTURE: the centerpiece of
Jewel Changi airport is its steel-
and-glass GRIDHSELL roof,
which spans 200 meters across at
its longest point. this semi-
inverted toroidal dome is
supported intermittently along
the rim of the garden, creating a STUCTURAL ANALYSIS IN TWISTED STEEL BRACING SYSTEM
near column-free interior. The SAP2000
GRIDSHELL structure was
analyzed for its ability to
withstand various loads, including
wind, seismic activity, and the
weight of the glass panels
CONTRUCTION EFFICIENCY
BIM allowed for accurate cost
estimation by integrating detailed
3d models with cost data. This
helped in predicting expenses
more precisely and avoiding
budget overruns.
BIM facilitated automated
quantity takeoffs, which provided
precise measurements of
materials needed. this reduced
waste and ensured that the right
amount of materials was ordered.
BIM tools were used to track the CONSTRUCTION OF FLOORS USE OF TWISTED STEEL CONSTRUCTION OF
budget throughout the project. by BRACING SHELL ROOF
linking the BIM model with cost
data, the project team could
monitor expenses in real-time and
make adjustments as needed
BIM made it easier to manage
changes in the design. any
modifications to the model
automatically updated the
associated cost data, allowing for
quick assessment of the financial

USING BIM
COLLABORATION
Throughout the project, BIM was
used for design review processes.
This involved creating detailed
models that could be thoroughly
examined and optimized.
BIM enabled stakeholders to
collaborate effectively, ensuring
that all design elements were
aligned and any issues were
addressed early in the process.
BIM facilitated seamless
coordination between different
disciplines. for example, structural
engineers could easily collaborate
with architects to ensure that the
design was both aesthetically
pleasing and structurally sound.
Any changes made to the BIM
model were instantly reflected
across all stakeholders. this real-
time updating capability ensured
that everyone was always working
with the latest information
JEWEL CHANGI BIM USAGE
The Jewel Changi airport project explored multiple dimensions of BIM,
enhancing various aspects of its design, construction, and maintenance.
3d BIM (modeling): used for creating detailed 3d models of the architectural
and structural elements, allowing for precise visualization and planning1.
4d BIM (time): incorporated to manage construction schedules and simulate
the construction process, ensuring efficient sequencing and minimizing
disruptions.
5d BIM (cost): utilized for cost estimation and budget management, helping to
track expenses and optimize resource allocation.
6d BIM (sustainability): focused on environmental performance, including
energy efficiency and sustainability measures, such as optimizing natural light
and reducing heat gain.
7d BIM (facility management): used for developing maintenance strategies and
managing the lifecycle of the building, ensuring long-term operational
efficiency
