of the triangle formed by these lines and the y-axis.

2. Solve for x and y by Substitution method:

2𝑥 𝑦 𝑥 𝑦
+ =2; − =4
𝑎 𝑏 𝑎 𝑏

3. Solve for x and y by elimination method:

𝑥 𝑦 𝑥 𝑦
+ + 1 = 15 ; + = 15.

4. Solve by cross multiplication method:

(i) 6𝑥 − 5𝑦 − 16 = 0 ; 7𝑥 − 13𝑦 + 10 = 0.
𝑎𝑥 𝑏𝑦
(ii) − =𝑎+𝑏; 𝑎𝑥 − 𝑏𝑦 = 2𝑎𝑏
𝑏 𝑎

5. Solve for x and y:

(i) 71𝑥 + 37𝑦 = 253 ; 37𝑥 + 71𝑦 = 287
6 8
(ii) 𝑥 + = 6 ; 3𝑥 − = 5 (𝑦 ≠ 0)
𝑦 𝑦
3 2 9 4
(iii) + = 2; − = 1. ( x + y ≠ 0 and x – y ≠ 0)
𝑥+𝑦 𝑥−𝑦 𝑥+𝑦 𝑥−𝑦
1 1 3 1 1 −1
(iv) (3𝑥+𝑦)
+ (3𝑥−𝑦)
= ; − = .
4 2(3𝑥+𝑦) 2(3𝑥−𝑦) 8
(v) (𝑎 + 2𝑏)𝑥 + (2𝑎 − 𝑏)𝑦 = 2 ; (𝑎 − 2𝑏)𝑥 + (2𝑎 + 𝑏)𝑦 = 3
(vi) 𝑚𝑥 − 𝑛𝑦 = 𝑚2 + 𝑛2 ; 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 2𝑚
(vii) 2(𝑎𝑥 − 𝑏𝑦) + 𝑎 + 4𝑏 = 0; 2(𝑏𝑥 + 𝑎𝑦) + 𝑏 − 4𝑎 = 0
57 6 38 21
(viii) + =5; + =9
𝑥+𝑦 𝑥−𝑦 𝑥+𝑦 𝑥−𝑦
5 2 15 7
(ix) − = −1 ; + = 10
√𝑥+𝑦 √𝑥−𝑦 √𝑥+𝑦 √𝑥−𝑦
(x) 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 𝑎 + 𝑏 ; 𝑎𝑥 − 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑎 − 𝑏 2 . 2

6. Find the values of a and b for which the system of linear equations has an infinite
number of solutions:
2𝑥 − 3𝑦 = 7 ; (𝑎 + 𝑏 + 1)𝑥 + (𝑎 + 2𝑏 + 2)𝑦 = 4(𝑎 + 𝑏) + 1

7. Find the value of k for which the system of linear equations has an infinite number of
solutions: (𝑘 − 1)𝑥 − 𝑦 = 5 ; (𝑘 + 1)𝑥 + (1 − 𝑘)𝑦 = (3𝑘 + 1).

8. For which value of k the system has no solution:

𝑘𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 𝑘 − 3 ; 12𝑥 + 𝑘𝑦 = 𝑘.

9. For which value of p the system has a unique solution: 5𝑥 − 7𝑦 − 5 = 0;

2𝑥 + 𝑝𝑦 − 1 = 0.
10. Find the value of k for which the system of equations 𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 5 , 3𝑥 + 𝑘𝑦 − 15 = 0
has no solution.
11. Application Problems:

a) A part of monthly hostel charges in a school is fixed and the remaining depends on
the number of days one has taken food in the mess. When a student A takes food for
22 days, he has to pay ₹ 4250 as hostel charges, whereas a student B, who takes food
for 28 days, pays ₹ 5150 as hostel charges. Find the fixed charges and the cost of food
per day.

b) The monthly incomes of A and B are in the ratio 8 : 7 and their expenditures are in the
ratio 19 : 16. If each saves ₹ 5000 per month, find the monthly income of each.

c) Each one of A and B has some money. If A gives ₹ 30 to B then B will have twice the
money left with A. But if B gives ₹ 10 to A, then A will have thrice as much as is left
with B. How much money does each have?
8
d) The sum of two numbers is 8 and the sum of their reciprocals is · Find the numbers.
15
e) The sum of a two-digit number and the number obtained by reversing the order of its
digits is 99. If the digits differ by 3, find the numbers.

f) A boat goes 12 km upstream and 40 km downstream in 8 hours. It can go 16 km

upstream and 32 km downstream in the same time. Find the speed of the boat in still
water and the speed of the stream.

g) A railway half ticket costs half the full fare and the reservation charge is the same on half
ticket as on full ticket. One reserved first-class ticket from Mumbai to Delhi costs ₹ 4150
while one full and one half reserved first class tickets cost ₹ 6255. What is the basic first-
class full fare and what is the reservation charge?

h) A man travels 600 km partly by train and partly by car. If he covers 400 km by train and
the rest by car, it takes him 6 hours and 30 minutes. But, if he travels 200 km by train and
the rest by car, he takes half an hour longer. Find the speed of the train and that of the
car.

i) Places A and B are 80 km apart from each other on a highway. A car starts from A and
other from B at the same time. If they move in the same direction, they meet in 8 hours
and if they move in opposite in directions, they meet in 1 hour and 20 minutes. Find the
speeds of the cars.

j) A man walks a certain distance with certain speed. If he walks ½ km an hour faster, he
takes 1 hour less. But, if he walks 1 km an hour slower, he takes 3 more hours. Find the
distance covered by the man and his original rate of walking.

k) While covering a distance of 30 km. Ajeet takes 2 hours more than Amit. If Ajeet
doubles speed, he would take 1 hour less than Amit. Find their speeds of walking.

l) 2 men and 5 boys can finish a piece of work in 4 days, while 3 men and 6 boys can
finish it in 3 days. Find the time taken by one man alone to finish the work and that
taken b one boy alone to finish the work.

m) The area of a rectangle gets reduced by 8 m2, when its length is reduced by 5 m and
its breadth is increased by 3 m. If we increase the length by 3 m and breadth by 2 m,
the area is increased by 74 m2. Find the length and the breadth of the rectangle.
