What do actuaries do?
Actuaries are experts in analysing the past. They construct
financial models for the future, assess risk and communicate
the results in financial terms. They work in life and non-life
insurance, consultancy, healthcare, investment, corporate
finance, government service, academia and industry.
As an actuary, the decisions you make could affect hundreds
of thousands of people in all walks of life. You could even
be responsible for billions of pounds of investment.
It means the path to qualification is not easy.

What you’ll need

You will certainly need a good grade in A-level or Scottish
Higher maths, but most people also have a good degree
in a numerate subject such as mathematics, statistics, sciences
or economics. Actuarial science degrees, including a full-time,
one year postgraduate diploma or MSc course, may give
exemptions from some of the professional exams.

What you can expect

It is very demanding – you will need to study hard for the
professional exams, although most employers provide study
leave and financial support towards tuition costs. It is also very
rewarding. An actuarial career can offer intellectual challenge,
professional status, job satisfaction and high earnings. You can
also expect real diversity – actuaries are increasingly extending
their activities beyond traditional insurance and pension roles
so you could find yourself helping companies manage finance for
major projects or structuring mergers and acquisitions.

 What should you do next?
If you think it could be for you, an excellent first step would be
to do some work experience. This will give you the opportunity
to see what the job entails within a real commercial environment.
It also gives you a chance to network and will help to set you
apart if you decide to pursue a long-term career as an actuary.

your CV together with a covering letter, or by completing the
company’s own application form. You could also approach
companies with speculative applications. Your school or
university careers services may have information on work
experience vacancies too.
