SECTION B
16 Introduction: 5
Symmetry is an important concept in both nature and human-made objects. It plays a vital
role in art, design, architecture, and even in the formation of molecules. Symmetry can be
observed in various forms such as line symmetry (reflection symmetry), rotational
symmetry, and point symmetry. In this case study, we will explore the concept of
symmetry through the analysis of various objects.
Context:
Consider a variety of everyday objects:
A square tablecloth
A regular hexagonal clock face
A rectangular door
A circular pizza
An isosceles triangle traffic sign
Using these objects, answer the following questions based on symmetry:

1. Which of the following objects has no line of symmetry?

A) A square tablecloth B) A regular hexagonal clock face
C) A rectangular door D) A scalene triangle traffic sign

2. How many lines of symmetry does the square tablecloth have?

A) 1 B) 2 C) 4 D) 6

3. What is the order of rotational symmetry of a regular hexagonal clock face?

A) 2 B) 3 C) 6 D) 12

4. Which of the following statements is true for the rectangular door?

A) It has 1 line of symmetry. B) It has 2 lines of symmetry.
C) It has no line of symmetry D) It has rotational symmetry of order 4.

5. Which object from the list has infinite lines of symmetry?

A) A circular pizza B) A square tablecloth
C) A regular hexagonal clock face D) An isosceles triangle traffic sign

17 Ravi and Anil are playing a game involving points. In this game, they gain or lose points based on 5
their performance in various rounds. The rules are as follows:

Bright Line Institute | WWW.BRIGHTLINEINSTITUTE.CO.IN

 In each round, if they win, they gain points, and if they lose, they lose points.
 Ravi starts with 10 points, and Anil starts with 5 points.

Here’s how their rounds go:

1. In the first round, Ravi wins 15 points, and Anil loses 8 points.
2. In the second round, Ravi loses 12 points, and Anil gains 20 points.
3. In the third round, Ravi wins 5 points, and Anil loses 10 points.

The goal is to find out their final points after all three rounds and understand how positive and
negative integers can be used to represent gains and losses.

1) What are Ravi's points after the first round if he starts with 10 points and wins 15
points?

a) 15 b) 10 c) 25 d) 30

2) What are Anil's points after the first round if he starts with 5 points and loses 8
points?

a) -3 b) 0 c) 3 d) -8

3) After the second round, if Ravi loses 12 points from his score of 25, what is his new
score?

a) 12 b) 15 c) 13 d) 10

4) After the second round, if Anil gains 20 points from his score of -3, what is his new
score?

a) 15 b) 17 c) 18 d) 20

5) After the third round, if Ravi wins 5 more points and Anil loses 10 points, what are
their final scores?

a) Ravi: 18, Anil: 7 b) Ravi: 17, Anil: 5

c) Ravi: 15, Anil: 7 d) Ravi: 18, Anil: 10

18 In a quiz, team A scored – 40, 10, 0 and team B scored 10, 0, – 40 in three successive rounds. 2
Which team scored more? Can we say that we can add integers in any order?

19 A cricketer scores the following runs in eight innings: 2

(a) An equilateral triangle (b) An isosceles triangle
(c) A scalene triangle (d) A square
(e) A rectangle (f) A rhombus

25 In a test (+5) marks are given for every correct answer and (–2) marks are given for every 3
incorrect answer.
(i) Radhika answered all the questions and scored 30 marks though she got 10 correct answers. (ii)
Jay also answered all the questions and scored (–12) marks though he got 4 correct answers. How
many incorrect answers had they attempted?
