System of Particles - Ws

The document contains a series of physics problems focused on the concepts of moment of inertia and conservation of angular momentum. It includes calculations related to energy expenditure in rotating systems, the moment of inertia for various shapes, and the effects of changes in mass distribution on rotational dynamics. Additionally, it addresses practical scenarios involving angular speed and kinetic energy in rotating bodies.

inertia of the system about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the system and passing through the
centre of the square.
4. Calculate the ratio of radii of gyration of a circular ring and a disc of the same radius about the axis
passing through their centers and perpendicular to their planes.
5. What will be the duration of the day, if earth suddenly shrinks to 1/64 of its original volume, mass
remaining the same?
6. The moment of inertia of a solid sphere about a tangent is 5/3 MR 2, where M is mass and R is radius of
the sphere. Find the M.I. of the sphere about its diameter.
7. The moment of inertia of a uniform circular disc about a tangent in its own plane is 5/4 MR 2, where M
is mass and R is the radius of the disc. Find its M.I. about an axis through its centre and perpendicular to
its plane.
8. One quarter sector is cut from a uniform circular disc of radius R. This sector has mass M. It is made to
rotate about a line perpendicular to its plane and passing through the centre of the original disc. What is
its moment of inertia about the axis of rotation?
9. Two uniform circular discs, each of mass 1kg and radius 20cm, are kept in contact about the tangent
passing through the point of contact. Find the moment of inertia of the system about the tangent passing
through the point of contact.

10. A ballet dancer spins about a vertical axis at 60 rpm with arms outstretched. When her arms are
folded the angular frequency increases to 90 rpm. Find the change in her moment of inertia.

11. Of the two eggs which have identical sizes, shapes and weights, one is raw and other is half boiled.
The ratio between the moment of inertia of the raw to the half boiled egg about central axis is :
(a) = 1 (b) > 1 (c) < 1 (d) not comparable

12. Identify the increasing order of radius of gyration of following bodies of same radius
(I) About natural axis of circular ring (II) About diameter of circular ring
(III) About diameter of circular plate (IV) About diameter of solid sphere
(a) II, III, IV, I (b) III, II, IV, I (c) III, IV, II, I (d) II, IV, III, I
13. From a circular disc of radius R and mass 9 M , a small disc of radius R/3 is removed from the disc.
The moment of inertia of the remaining disc about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the disc and
passing through O is

(a) 40/9 MR2 (b) MR2 (c) 4 MR2 (d) 4/9 MR2

14. Torques of equal magnitude are applied to a hollow cylinder and a solid sphere, both having the same
mass and radius. The cylinder is free to rotate about its standard axis of symmetry, and the sphere is free
to rotate about an axis passing through its centre. Which of the two will acquire a greater angular speed
after a given time? Justify.

15. (i) A child stands at the centre of turntable with his two arms out stretched. The turntable is set
rotating with an angular speed of 40 rpm. How much is the angular speed of the child if he folds his
hands back and thereby reduces his moment of inertia to 2/3 times the initial value? Assume that the
turntable rotates without friction.
(ii) Show that the child’s new kinetic energy of rotation is more than the initial kinetic energy of
rotation. How do you account for this increase in kinetic energy?

16. A rope of negligible mass is wound round a hollow cylinder of mass 3 kg and radius 40 cm. What is
angular acceleration of the cylinder if the rope is pulled with a force of 30 N? What is the linear
