FILE SHARING BEGTWEEN PCs

1. ESTABLISH AND VERIFY A CONNECTION

Let’s say we have PC A and PC B

Log into PC A and open command prompt by pressing Windows Key together with letter R:

On the Run Box that pops up write the letters “cmd” in the Open space

Click OK or Enter Key to display a black screen

Write the command “ipconfig” at the cursor and click Enter to display Network details of the PC

Note the IP address 192.168.171.193

Go to PC B and repeat the same procedure to get the Network details and note the IP address of PC B
too.

Now go to PC A and open the black command prompt screen and issue the command below

Ping a.b.c.d (where a.b.c.d is the IP address of PC B)

If you get a reply response like the one below, it means the two PCs can “see” each other and thus can
interact and shares

If you get a ping failure response like the one below it means the two PCs cannot connect and hence
cannot share files; so you have to recheck your network

2. CONFIGURE SHARING

Now that we have established a connection between the two PCs, now its time to share files

Lets say we want to share files on PC A with PC B

a.GO to PC A and select a folder whose files you want to share

b.Right click and go to Properties

c.Select the SHARING tab and then click on Share

d. On the people to share with select “Everyone” (Label Y)on the drop down and choose appropriate
permission level(Read or Read/Write)(Label Z) and then click Share button

You have successfully shared the files

3.ACCESSING THE SHARED FILES

Now go to PC B and Open Run Box (Win Key +R)

Write \\a.b.c.d where a.b.c.d is the ip address of PC A and Enter/OK

A dialogue box opens where you have to put the credentials of PC A in the format below
USename : PCA _Hostname\PCA_User_Profile_Name

Password : PCA_User_Profile_Password

NB: The PCA_Hostname can be obtained by using the command “hostname” on cmd/black screen

User Profile Name is the Login Account on the PC and Profile Password is the Log in password

You should be able to access the shared files now
