Learning Objective

a. identify claim explicitly or

implicitly made in a written text:
claims of fact, claims of policy,
and claims of value.
LESSON 4:
The Different Kinds of
Claim
Introduction
Every writer makes claim in the text he/she
writes. These claims are used by the writer to
help understand the thing/s he/she is
discussing. When used correctly, claims help a
writer educate, inform, convince, or even
inspire a reader to take action.
Claim vs. Fact
Claim is a piece of information that a writer believes
to be true, but must be proven. A good claim must be
specific. This defines the goals of the write up, thus
this must be supported by significant details, and
evidences.
A fact is something true and believable, based on
tested, proven, and accepted evidence.
The different Types of Claim

Claim of Fact
Claim of Policy
Claim of Value
Claims of Fact
Definition: an assertion that something can
be proven or disproved with factual evidence
Features: debatable; proposes whether
an assertion is or is not true or false;
often verifiable
Examples
- Death is unavoidable.
- Solar energy is the source clean
energy production.
- Smoking damaged the heart
muscles and blood vessels.
Claims of Policy
Definition: an argument that certain conditions
should exist, or that something should or
should not be done in order to solve a problem.
Features: ask for plans of action to solve
current problems; advocates a specific
course of action
Claim of policy is the argument where actions should
be carried out. Basically, it is
perceived as a relatively direct statement.
This claim can also be called claim of
solution because it suggests and supports policies and
solutions, and the action to
be taken is based on the results.

You will know if a statement is a claim of policy if

there is an action to be done or a solution to be taken.
Examples
- Wearing of masks should be required to
everybody to lessen the spread of
COVID 19.
- Parents should understand the positive
and negative effects of the internet.
Claims of Value
Definition: an assertion of a person’s sense of
values, correct or wrong, positive and
negative.
Features: judges the value of something; tries
to affirm that some idea, action, or condition
is right or wrong, positive or negative.
Claim of value is an argument
based on morality, belief, ethics, or
philosophy. It is influentially stated
by combining limited facts and
proving them as either
good or bad by targeting the
reader’s emotion.
Examples

- The essential keys to success are

determination and discipline.
- Heaven is the ultimate goal of human.
- Keeping a dog in a cage is an act of
utmost cruelty.
Explicit Claims VS. Implicit Claims
Explicit Claims
Claims that are actually said in the text.
If we were to relate this to the levels of
comprehension, explicit claims can be
accessed by simply applying literal
comprehension.
Explicit Claims VS. Implicit Claims
Implicit Claims
Claims that need to be inferred from a text.
These claims are not accessible unless one
applies inferential comprehension. In short,
these claims are implied.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EXPLICIT
AND IMPLICIT CLAIMS
Something is explicit when it is
directly stated and leaves no room
for uncertainty. Something is
implicit when it is implied but not
directly stated.
