LESSON: THE NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF
SOCIAL DANCE AND DANCE ETIQUETTE

At the end of the SLeM, students should be able to:

2. realize the importance of fostering dance etiquette in social dancing; and

Accidents can happen anytime and anywhere. Some people are more prone to
injuries particularly those who are in the sports community. Thus, it is necessary to be
knowledgeable in administering first aid to a person in need to prevent further damages
and save lives.

THE NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF SOCIAL DANCE

SOCIAL DANCES
● These are communal numbers performed in social gatherings in any given space.
● Synonymously referred to as ballroom dances, but the latter is performed in balls or formal social
functions.
● These dances are usually performed in pairs, male and female, but may also be performed in
groups.
Two Major Classifications of Social Dances
1. Latin American Dances
⮚ It can be determined through the costume worn by the performer.
⮚ It is revealing, tight-fitting, sexy and sophisticated in nature.
⮚ It can be performed in an open or close hold.
⮚ It can also be easily determined by the nature of the movement. The movement shows
rhythmic expression, sensual, and spicy style.

2. Modern Standard Dances

⮚ The performers wear ankle-length gowns for females and coat-and-tie for males.
⮚ Most of the time, they perform close ballroom positions. However, if it is a dance sport, it
is strict to do close ballroom position.

established rules of different levels of difficulty.
● It refers more to competitions and the dancing are referred to as competitive ballroom
dancing.
● It is limited to five dances per category only. These are the cha-cha-cha, rumba, samba,
paso doble and jive for the Latin category and slow waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, foxtrot
and quickstep for the standard category.

DANCE MIXERS

● Are social dances that allow a group of performers to change partners periodically while
dancing to allow chance to get to know other members of the performing group.
● The major purpose of dance mixers is to maximize the social dimension of the dance.
● There are specific dance mixers that are performed in social events but ballroom or social
dance can be converted into dance mixers by expanding it from a pair-dancing to a group
dancing activity with exchanging of partners periodically while dancing.
● Social Dances and Dance Mixers are intended primarily for participants to get to know other
people in attendance at a certain social function.

⮚ It is a set of strategy that helps us to navigate the social extent of dancing.


⮚ It has developed gradually in order to allow freedom of movement and expression while

sharing a dance floor comfortably.

A. WHAT TO WEAR

Dancing has its own culture. In social dances and dance mixers, the more formal the dance, the
more formal the outfit.

ATTIRE GENTLEMEN LADIES

Formal Tailcoat, Tuxedo Coat, Regular Ball Gown, Evening Gown, Dinner
Coat, Bow Tie or Regular Necktie, Gown, Cocktail Gown
Black Trouser

Semi-formal Dress Shirt and Tie, Vest or Dinner Dresses, Flowing Pants
Sweater that shows the Tie

Latin Button-up shirt, Solid T-shirt, Sexy Outfits and Long Slit skirts,
Turtleneck, Dress Slacks, Bright Low Necklines and Exposed Midriffs
Colorful Outfits are Accepted are Popular
Dressy Casual Solid Color T-shirts, Turtleneck, Anything that displays a
Polo Shirt, Cotton Slacks conservative, toned-down

DON’Ts IN TERMS OF OUTFITS and DANCE SHOES:

● Avoid wearing sneakers or any shoe with rubber or spongy sole. It can stick to the dance
floor during turns and spins and it can cause knee and ankle injuries. Always wear a pair of
dance shoes.
● Do not use sleeveless shirts and strapped dresses. It is unpleasant to touch your sweaty
skin.
● Do not use a shaggy, loose, low armpit upper shirt. Your partner’s hand may get caught in
the baggy sleeves.
● Do not use big rings, watches, brooches, loose/long necklaces and big belt buckles. It may
cause injuries like scratches and bruises when your partner’s clothing caught it.
● Long hair should be put up or tied in a ponytail because it might get caught in the partner’s
hands or may even hit your partner’s face.

B. PERSONAL GROOMING

Dancing is an activity where two people come in close contact.

⮚ “Care to dance?”
⮚ “Shall we dance?”
● In the past it has been the tradition that men asked women to dance. But this custom
has gradually changed. Today, women should feel equally comfortable asking a partner
for a dance, even in a formal setting.

D. ON THE DANCE FLOOR

E. NO-FAULT DANCING

● Never blame a partner for missed execution of figures.


● Dance to the level of your partner.
● The show must go on, say “sorry” to your partner if something went wrong.

F. DEMEANOR

● Be personable, smile and make eye contact with your partner.


● Project a positive image on the dance floor even if it’s not your personal style.

● Dance at the level of your partner.
● If you don’t know the dance, be honest, refuse promptly if asked to dance.
● No teaching on the dance floor. It may insult your partner.
● Do not cut other dancers off.

B. Let’s do a Ballroom Dance

Directions: Perform any ballroom dances that you or your parents/guardians are familiar with
or have learnt from your community. You may request a dance from a family member
(parent/guardian) and perform it for 3 minutes before answering the following questions. Send
a video of your dance performance to your teacher. (Optional)

You'll need the following items:


• Music Player (If available)
• Ballroom music (If available) / or Clapper
• Pen
• Paper

Routine before the dance:

Do the warm-up exercises first, then go on to the actual activity.

Here's how to do it:

1. The ballroom dance that you will perform can be executed with or without a
partner.
2. Play any ballroom dance music or just clap the rhythm of the dance.
3. Dance for 3 minutes, then answer the following questions.

Processing Questions:

1. How did you feel after doing the activity?


2. Were you able to perform well? Justify your answer.
3. What do you think is the importance of social dance in improving your fitness
and well-being?

Social dance is very helpful in establishing healthy connections with other young people and
in cultivating a sense of acceptance and belongingness within a social group.
