Physics Practice Problems

Conservation of Momentum in Elastic Collisions

1. A basketball crashes into a tennis ball, and both balls bounce off in opposite directions after
impact. What type of collision is this most likely?

2. A cue ball of mass 0.2kg is hit with a velocity of 15m/s into a stationary 0.2kg number 4 ball.
After the impact, the cue ball stops and the 4 ball moves.
a. What is the speed of the 4 ball after impact?

b. Is this collision more elastic, or more inelastic?

3. A cue ball of mass 0.2kg is hit with a velocity of 10m/s into a stationary 0.2kg number 8 ball.
After the impact, the cue ball continues to roll at 5m/s in its original direction.
a. What is the speed of the 8 ball after impact?

4. Marina and Kory are going to do a workout ball joust. They both run toward each other holding
their workout ball, and jump into the air. When they make impact, they both fly in opposite
directions. Kory has a mass of 50kg and was traveling at 5m/s to the right before the impact.
Marina has a mass of 40kg and was traveling 7m/s to the left before impact. After the impact,
Kory is now traveling 3m/s to the right.
a. How fast is Marina traveling now?

b. In what direction is Marina traveling?

5. A 0.15kg baseball is pitched at 48m/s to the right. It is hit by a 1.2kg baseball bat traveling to the
left at 20m/s. After the impact, the bat continues to travel to the left at 19m/s. How fast is the
ball traveling after impact?

6. Two croquet balls have the same mass. One is green and is traveling to the right at 3m/s and
hits a red ball. The red ball was also traveling to the right at 1 m/s before the impact. After
impact, the green ball stops immediately…

a. What is the velocity of the red ball after impact?

b. If the total momentum of the collision is 1kgm/s, how much mass do the balls have?

7. In a lab in coach Nelson’s class, Charles releases a silver cart that has a mass of 0.25kg at a velocity of
1.2m/s so that it will hit a stationary green 0.75kg cart on the track. After the elastic collision impact,
the green 0.75kg cart travels in the original direction at a speed of 0.8m/s. What is the velocity of the
silver cart after the collision?

8. Mikel rolls a 0.5kg cart to the right at 2m/s. Laytyn rolls a 0.75kg cart to the left at 5m/s. The carts will
collide and create an elastic collision. After the collision, Laytyn’s cart is moving to the left at 2 m/s.
What is the velocity and direction of Mikel’s cart after the collision?
