A mock interview
mirrors an actual job
interview. It gives you an
opportunity to practice what to say and do during an interview and get
feedback. Whether it’s face-to-face, online, or through a webcam, a mock
interview is useful in reviewing your answers to common interview
questions and assessing other factors such as your outfit, mannerisms,
and body language.
 A Mock Interview is one of the very best ways to prepare for an actual
employment interview. The Mock Interview will help you to learn what is
expected in a real interview, and how you can improve the way you
present yourself. The interview is video recorded and then reviewed with
you and a trained Mock Interview Coach. The Mock Interview Coach will
provide constructive feedback on all aspects of the interview process.
 The Mock Interview Coach will try to make the interview as realistic as
possible. Many of the questions you will be asked are interview questions
from actual employers. The Mock Interview takes about 20 minutes; then
you will watch and discuss your performance. The Mock Interview and
critique will last approximately one hour.
 The Mock Interview focuses on how well you know yourself and your
past experiences, how well you know the industry you hope to enter, and
how well you can convey that information. You will gain the most
experience from your Mock Interview, if you treat it like an actual
interview. The Mock Interview is a safe place to practice your interview
skills and gain feedback.
The Mock Interview Program is designed to help you:

 Practice interviewing
 Develop interviewing strategies
 Reduce your anxiety and nervousness before your actual interview
 Create a good first impression
 Communicate your skills clearly
 How to answer difficult questions

THE 5-PARTS INTERVIEW

1. Before the Interview
 Do your homework. Find out as much as you can about the
company/organization before the interview. Do an internet
search to find what services or products the company provides.
Try to find the company’s culture and long-term goals. Talk with
current employees to learn more about the company.
o Know where you are going. Make sure you know where the
company is located.
o Arrive 5-15 minutes early. Do not arrive too early, but not late
either.
 Be prepared for the interview. Bring extra copies of your resume,
a pen, and questions for the interview. Do not bring your phone
or at the very least make sure the phone is on silent.
o Dress for success. As a general rule dress one or two steps above
the position you are applying for.
2. The Start of the Interview (Beginning)
 Inform the secretary/receptionist that you have an interview,
whom it is with and the time of the interview
 When meeting the interview, look them in their eyes, shake
hands firmly, introduce yourself, smile and be confident.
o Keep the communication positive. Watch your posture. Let the
interviewer lead the interviewer.
Remember to SMILE.
o Don’t chew gum, curse, fidget, etc.
3. The Interview (Middle)
o Stay positive and keep good posture and body language.
o Know your resume well and be prepared to answer questions.
o Express your willingness to learn.
o Be thorough with your answers. Be prepared to give examples.
o If you do not understand the question, ask the interviewer for
further explanation.
o It is okay to take a moment to organize your thoughts before
answering difficult questions.
 You do not need to answer illegal questions such as questions
relating to your age, religion, race, ethnicity or marital status.
 Don’t focus on your weaknesses or your negative attributes,
criticize former employers, discuss personal issues, or
salary/benefits unless initiated by the interviewer.
4. The Interview (End)
o Ask job-related questions you prepared for the interview.
 If offered the job immediately, be prepared to discuss salary,
benefits, work hours. You do not need to give them an immediate
answer.
o If you are told that you will be contacted, ask about how long it will
be.
o Thank the interviewer for their time and reiterate your interest
with the company/organization.
o Shake hands firmly on the way out.
5. The Follow-up
o Send the interviewer(s) a thank you letter soon after the interview.
 Follow up with the company a week or two after the interview to
see if they have made a hiring decision. Remember to keep it
professional.

How to Prepare for a Mock Interview

A mock interview is a practice interview, but you need to take it seriously,
just as you would an actual job interview. Consider the mock interview as
a dress rehearsal. Keep the following things in mind to ace your mock
interview:
Common Interview Questions
You may not know the exact questions that the interviewer will ask you,
but preparing answers for commonly-asked questions can be useful. The
questions vary depending on the job level and industry you’re in, but it
helps to practice answering the following questions in your mock
interview:
1. “Tell me something about yourself”
It doesn’t mean that the interviewer wants to know your life story. This
is your opportunity to explain how your educational background,
knowledge, and skills that suit the job you’re applying for.
2. “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”
When it comes to your strong traits, focus on your skills or
accomplishments that align with what is needed in the job. When
stating your weak characteristics, make sure to share what you’ve
done to improve them.
3. “Where do you see yourself in five years?” or ”What are your career
goals?”
It may be tempting to say that you aim to climb the corporate ladder
and be a senior manager in five years’ time, but a more appealing
answer would be about the skills that you want to develop or further
improve over that time frame.
4. “Why do you want to be part of our company?”
This is where your research about the organization comes in. Make
sure to know a bit more about the company before the interview. Learn
its mission and the culture. To answer the question, explain how your
knowledge and skills are well-suited to what they’re looking for. You
can also say something about your career aspirations and share how
you can contribute to achieving the company’s goals.
5. “Do you have questions for me?” or ”What questions do you have for
me?”
This is your opportunity to ask well-researched questions, not only to
know more about the company but also to show the interviewer that
you did your homework and that you are genuinely interested in the
job.

So how are you supposed to conduct mock interviews in the first place?
Fortunately, the most successful educators have mapped out what’s
needed for a successful mock interview already!
Interview Caveats
• Being too friendly.
• Not listening to questions carefully.
• Saying "we" instead of referring to your own achievements.
• Making very general statements which lack substance.
• Being over enthusiastic.
• Being poorly prepared.
• Slouching, mumbling, speaking slowly.
• Knowing nothing about the company to whom you are talking.
• Making derogatory remarks about your previous employers

Reasons People Are Not Hired

• Poor appearance
• Inability to communicate clearly
• Lack of planning; no goals
• Lack of enthusiasm and confidence
• Talking poorly of previous employers
• Poor eye contact and body language
• Late to the interview
• Does not ask questions.
• Lack of knowledge about the business or the position
• No questions
• Impolite

What is an interview rating sheet?

One of the best ways to structure an interview is with an interview rating
sheet. An interview rating sheet allows recruiters and interviewers to
score a candidates interview in a uniform, consistent way. An interview
scorecard, or rating sheet is a great way to minimize bias and score
candidates objectively. Once data is collected from the various
candidates, it's easy to compare and contrast them to find the best pick
for the job.
Structuring an interview using an interview rating sheet is a great way for
you to judge and compare candidates objectively. It allows you to meet as
a hiring team and assess what aspects of this new hire are most critical,
and clearly test for them using a standardized method.

Mock Interview
Directions: Imagine that an employer does an interview to you because
you are applying for a job after your Senior HS. Write your answers on a
sheet of paper. Here are some selected questions that might be asked
from you. Choose at least three (3) questions and answer them in written
form. Use another sheet of bond paper for your answers.
1. If your colleagues had an opportunity to tell us your primary
strength what would that be? Your primary weakness-what would
that be?
2. What do you do when others resist of reject your ideas or actions?
3. What is your interpretation of “success?”
4. Suppose you are in a situation where deadlines and priorities
change frequently and rapidly. How would you handle it?
5. Tell me about a time when you were a part of a great team. What
was your part in the success of your team?
6. How would you describe an ideal work immersion supervisor?
