Lesson Plan: Past Simple Tense (3Es Framework)

Topic: Past Simple Tense (affirmative, negative, and questions)

Level: Intermediate
Duration: 60 minutes
Focus: Grammar (Past Simple Tense)
Skills: Speaking, Listening, Writing

Lesson Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
 Recognize and use the past simple tense to describe actions that happened
in the past.
 Form affirmative, negative, and question sentences in the past simple.
 Apply the past simple tense in speaking and writing activities.

Materials:
 Whiteboard and markers
 Flashcards or images (optional)
 Handouts with exercises
 A short story or anecdote (printed or projected)
 Audio clip or video (optional)

Stage 1: Exposure (15 minutes)

1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)
o Activity: Begin by asking students to share what they did yesterday.
Write their answers on the board, modeling the correct use of the past
simple tense.
o Example: "I went to the park." "She watched a movie."

o Purpose: To create interest and activate prior knowledge. This will

naturally introduce the topic of the past simple tense.
o Tense Focus: Draw attention to the past simple form (verb + -ed for
regular verbs, irregular verb forms for others).
2. Contextualization (10 minutes)
o Activity: Read aloud or play an audio recording of a short personal
story (e.g., "Last weekend, I visited a museum...").
o Ask students to listen carefully and identify verbs in the past tense.
Write examples on the board as students call them out.
o Example sentences: "I went to the museum," "I saw an exhibition,"
"It was very interesting."
o Purpose: To expose students to the target grammar in context (in this
case, the past simple tense used in a real-life context).

Stage 2: Explanation (20 minutes)

1. Grammar Explanation (10 minutes)
o Present the structure:

 Affirmative: Subject + past simple verb (e.g., "I played

football.")
 Negative: Subject + did not (didn't) + base verb (e.g., "I didn’t
play football.")
 Questions: Did + subject + base verb? (e.g., "Did you play
football?")
o Example sentences:

 Affirmative: "She visited her friend."

 Negative: "She didn’t visit her friend."
 Question: "Did she visit her friend?"
o Pronunciation Focus: Drill the correct pronunciation of regular past
tense forms (played, worked) and irregular forms (went, saw).
o Clarify: Explain the differences between regular and irregular verbs.

o Purpose: To clearly explain the form, usage, and pronunciation of the

past simple tense.
2. Clarification and Drilling (10 minutes)
o Activity: Provide students with a short list of sentences. Ask them to
work in pairs or small groups to transform affirmative sentences into
negative and question forms.
 Example sentences:
1. "I watched a movie."
2. "They visited Paris."
 Purpose: To reinforce grammar rules and give students
immediate practice.

Stage 3: Extension (20 minutes)

1. Controlled Practice (5 minutes)
o Activity: Distribute a worksheet with a short reading passage
containing several examples of the past simple tense (e.g., a story or
news article). Students complete sentences by filling in the blanks with
the correct past simple form of the verb.
o Example:
"Yesterday, I ______ (go) to the store and ______ (buy) some groceries."
o Purpose: To practice forming sentences correctly while focusing on
accuracy.
2. Free Practice (10 minutes)
o Activity: Ask students to work in pairs. Each pair will interview each
other about their last weekend using the past simple tense. Provide
them with prompts to guide the conversation (e.g., "What did you do
last weekend?" "Where did you go?" "Did you watch a movie?").
o Purpose: To practice using the past simple in a real communication
context, encouraging fluency and creativity.
3. Follow-up Speaking Activity (5 minutes)
o Activity: Have each student share one interesting thing they learned
about their partner during the interview. They should report it using the
past simple tense, for example: "John went to the beach last weekend."
o Purpose: To reinforce the use of the past simple in a communicative
context and allow students to practice speaking in front of the class.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
 Recap: Quickly review the past simple tense, emphasizing key points:
affirmative, negative, and question forms. Write a few more example
sentences on the board and ask students to identify the verb tense.
 Closing Question: Ask the students, "What did you learn today?" or "Can
you tell me one thing you did yesterday?" to reinforce the use of the target
grammar.
Homework/Follow-Up:
 Assign a short writing task where students describe their last holiday or
weekend using the past simple tense (150-200 words).
 Encourage students to focus on using both regular and irregular verbs, and
ask them to underline at least 5 verbs in the past simple.

Lesson Reflection:
After the class, reflect on the effectiveness of the lesson:
 Did students engage well with the exposure and activities?
 Were they able to explain the grammar rules clearly?
 Did the extension activities allow them to apply the grammar in real-world
contexts?
