STS Unit 2 Lesson 1 - Technology As A Way of Revealing

The document discusses Martin Heidegger's philosophy on technology, emphasizing its essence as a mode of revealing rather than merely a means to an end. It contrasts the ancient Greek concept of poiesis, which involves harmonious bringing forth, with modern technology's tendency to challenge nature and extract resources. Additionally, it highlights the dangers of technology overshadowing human essence and suggests that art can serve as a saving power by revealing truth in a way that technology cannot.

04 Enframing

02 Essence of Technology
05 Dangers of Technology

03 Technology as POIESIS
06 Art as the Saving Power
If science explores for the purpose of
knowing, technology explores for the
purpose of making something useful from
the knowledge.
01 Who is Martin Heidegger?
• Martin Heidegger (1889 - 1976) was a 20th Century
German philosopher.
• He was one of the most original and important
philosophers of the 20th Century, but also one of
the most controversial.
• His best-known book, "Being and Time", although
notoriously difficult, is generally considered to be
one of the most important philosophical works of
the 20th Century.
• In “The Question Concerning Technology ”, Martin
Heidegger discusses the essence of technology
THE ESSENCE OF
TECHNOLOGY
02 What is Technology?
• Instrumental Definition
• Technology is a means to an end.
• Anthropological Definition
• Technology is a human activity.

• The definition is correct but not necessarily true. The true

entails so much more meaning and significance. Heidegger ,
however, asserted that the true can be pursued through the
correct.
02 The Essence of Technology
• According to Heidegger, technology must be understood as a way of
revealing a mode of bringing forth.
• Ancient Greek Philosophy Concept
• Poiesis - the act of bringing something out of concealment.
• Aletheia - translated as unconcealedness and disclosure or truth.
(Heidegger means that something comes from being.)
• The machinery of technology is a realm of truth. The word technology
comes from the Greek word Technikon which belongs to the stem word
techne which refers to craft and artistic activities and other acts of mind
and poetry.
03 Technology as POIESIS –
Applicable to Modern Technology?
Attitude towards nature:
1. Bringing –forth is the proper attitude with regards to the
utilization of technology in relation to nature.
2. Challenging –forth is the most prevalent attitude towards
technology today and is being considered as the improper one.
03 Technology as POIESIS –
Applicable to Modern Technology?
• Modern technology may also be a mode of revealing but not as
harmonious bringing forth that is described in his thesis of technology
as a POIESIS.
• Modern technology challenges nature and demands of its resources that
are, most of the time, forcibly extracted for human consumption and
storage.
• It brings about a setting upon of the land.
03 Technology as POIESIS –
Applicable to Modern Technology?
• Mining is an example of modern technology that challenges
forth and brings about the setting upon of land.
• With modern technology, revealing never comes to an end.
• The revealing always happens on our own terms as
everything is on demand.
03 Technology as POIESIS –
Applicable to Modern Technology?
• Heidegger described modern technology as the age of
switches, standing reserve, and stockpiling for its own sake.
• This observation is manifest in the mechanization and
digitization of many aspects of our life.

• Modern technology is revealing not in the sense of bringing

forth but rather challenging forth.
Question: Is Technology Bringing-Forth or
Challenging Forth
• Bangui Windmill
Question: Is Technology Bringing-Forth or
Challenging Forth
• Mining Site
Question: Is Technology Bringing-Forth or
Challenging Forth
• Coal-fired Power Plant
04 Enframing: Way of Revealing
in Modern Technology
• The way of revealing in modern technology is an enframing.
• In simpler terms, if nature is put in a box or in a frame so that it
can be better understood and controlled according to people’s
desires.
• Poiesis is concealed in enframing as nature is viewed as an
orderable and calculable system of information.
04 Enframing

CALCULATIVE THINKING VS MEDITATIVE THINKING

• Calculative thinking, one orders and puts a system to nature
so it can be understood better and controlled.
• Meditative thinking, one lets nature reveal itself without
forcing it.
05 Dangers of Technology

Human Person Swallowed by Technology:

• If we allow ourselves to get swallowed by modern
technology, we lose the essence of who we are as beings in
this world.
• If we are constantly plugged online and no longer have the
capacity for authentic personal encounters, then we are
truly swallowed by technology.
06 Art as the Saving Power

• Heidegger identifies the dangers of this modern technology and how art
can be an antidote for these present threats and dangers.

• Heidegger suggested that art might be the saving power since art shares
its roots but also wander away from technology through its own sense of
revealing. Art is not a special sector of cultural activity as they are now
but rather an original act of creation bringing things into truth.
Activity: Poiesis vs Enframing

Create and present an artwork that helps reveal who the

human person is in the face of modern technology.

Criteria:
a) Beauty and message of artwork- 50%
b) Philosophizing, weaving together the elements of
Heidegger’s thought- 50%
