Q. 1 A shunt generator has an induced emf of 254 V. When the generator is loaded, the terminal
voltage is 240 V. Neglecting armature reaction, find the load current if the armature resistance is 0.04
ohm and the field circuit resistance is 24 ohms. (Aug 2016)

Ans:
E g = 254 V
V = 240 V
R a = 0.04 Ω , R sh = 24 Ω
Eg=V+IaRa
E g = V + (I L + I sh ) R a
I sh = V / R sh = 240/24 = 10A.
Substituting the values in the above expression,
254 = 240 + (I L + 10) 0.04
Load current (I L) = 340A
Q.2 The shaft output of a three-phase 60- Hz induction motor is 80 KW. The friction and windage
losses are 920 W, the stator core loss is 4300 W and the stator copper loss is 2690 W. The rotor current
and rotor resistance referred to stator are respectively 110 A and 0.15 Ω . If the slip is 3.8%, what is the
percent efficiency? (Aug 2016)
Ans:
P m =output = 80 KW
Windage and Friction losses = 920W
Stator core loss = 4300 W
Stator copper loss = 2690W
Slip = 3.8%
Gross mech output = Pm + windage and friction losses
= 80 KW + 920 W
= 80.92KW
rotor input / rotor gross output = 1/(1–s)
rotor input = rotor gross output / (1–s) = 80.92 KW /(1–0.038) = 84.11 KW
we know that ;
stator input = rotor input + stator core loss + stator cu loss
= 84.11 KW +4300 W + 2690 W = 91.1 KW
%η = (rotor output / stator input) x 100
= (80/91.1) x 100 KW
= 87.81 %

Q. 3 The power input to a 500 V, 50 Hz, 6 pole 3 phase squirrel cage induction motor running at 975
rpm is 40 KW. The stator losses are 1 KW and the friction and windage losses are 2 KW.
Calculate
(i) Slip
(ii) Rotor copper loss
(iii) Mechanical power developed
(iv) The efficiency.
(Jun 2016)
Ans:
Synchronous speed(N s )= 120 f /P = 120 X 50/6 = 1000RPM
Slip = ω s − ω m = 2 π X 1000 − 2 π X 975 = 25/1000 = 0.025
ωs 2 π X 1000
Power across air gap(P G ) = power input - stator copper loss
Thus P G = 40KW-1KW=39KW
Rotor copper loss= sP G =0.025*39=0.975KW
Gross mechanical output= (1-s)P G =39-0.975=38.025KW
Net mechanical output=Gross mechanical output-friction and winding loss
= (38.025-2.000)KW = 36.025KW
Efficiency = Net Mech output = 36.025 /40 =≈ 90 %
Power input
Note: Assume that the core loss is included in friction and windage loss and the total loss under this head is 2 kW.

Calculate
(i) the two components of no-load current. If this transformer supplies a load current of 40 amp at 0.8

I o = 0.64 A , W o = 700W
Iron loss current = 700/2400 =0.2916 A
Now , I o2 = I w2 + I μ 2
Magnetizing component I μ = ( I o2 – I w2) 1/2 = (0.64 2 – 0.2916 2 ) 1/2 = 0.5697 A
On load :-
I 2 = 40 A
Φ 2 = 0.8 lag

Φ o = cos –1 0.455 = 62.88 o

Φ 2 = cos –10.8 = 36.86 o

Now, turn ratio K =V 1 /V 2 = 240/ 2400 = 0.1
I21 = K I 2 = 40 x 0.1 = 4 A

Angle between I 0 and I21 = 62.88 o – 36.86 o = 26.02 o

I 0 = 0.64 ∠ –62.88o

I 21 = 4 ∠ –36.86 o
I 1 = I o + I 21 = 0.64 [cos( 62.88) – j sin (62.88) ] + 4[ cos(36.86) – jsin( 36.86) ]
= 4.583
Primery Current(I 1) = 4.583 A
For funding out Primery powerfactor we need Active and reactive components of primery
Active component = I21 cos Φ 2 + Io cos Φ o= 4x 0.8 + 0.64 x 0.455 = 3 .3+ 0.29= 3.59
Reactive Component = I21 sin Φ 2 + Io sin Φ o = 4x 0.6 + 0.64 x 0.89 = 2.4+ 0.57 = 2.97

Φ 1= tan–1(Reactive Component/Active component)= tan–1 (2.97/3.59) = 39.7 o =≈ 40o

cos Φ 1 = cos 40 =0.76 lag

I1+I2 = 150 A
I2 = 150- I1 -----( 1)

For Gen 1 , V = E1- I1 Ra1 = 250 – 0.2 I1 -------- (2)

For Gen 2, V= E2- I2 Ra2 = 255- 0.3( 150-I1) = 255-45 + 0.3 I1 = 210 + 0.3 I1 -------- (3)

(3) = (2) => 250 – 0.2 I1 = 210 + 0.3 I1

0.5 I1 = 40
I1 = 40/0.5 = 80 A
Now, I2 = 150- I1 = 150 -80 = 70 A
O/P Voltage of Gen 1 = 250 - 0.2 x 80 = 234 V
O/P Voltage of Gen 2 = 255 - 0.3 x 70 = 234 V
Q 9. The following loads are supplied by two alternator running in parallel
(i) 1400 KW @ 0.86 pf lagging (ii) 900 KW @ 0.8 pf lagging
(iii) 800 KW @ unity pf (iv) 500 KW @ 0.8 pf leading
If the load on one machine is adjusted to 2100KW @ pf of 0.95 Find the load and power factor of the
other alternator?

Q 10. Two alternators are working in parallel supply a lighting load of 3000 KW and motor load
aggregating to 5000 KW at 0.72 pf . One machine loaded upto 5000 KW at 0.8 pf lagging. What is the
load and power factor of the other machne?
