Mohite Sinhgad College of Science, Ambegaon, Pune. Dr. Mrs, Deepa V. Ramane Sinhgad College of Science, Ambegaon, Pune. Abstract An adyent and inventions in technologies has affected every facet of our life. The effectual integration of information and Communication Technology (ICT) into teaching and learning process can provide multiple opportunities and experiences to learners and can promote professional growth and development of teachers as well. It is a well known fact that ICT tools are used widely (0 support and enhance the knowledge in the realm of education, In the present paper, we have overviewed the paradigm shift in educational practices and approaches occurred due to the effective use ICT. It also accentuates the effectiveness of ICT in facilitating learning and assessment of students, Keywords: ICT, leaming, teaching, assessment, blended teaching L.A: Introduction We live in the era of technology, and it has become imperative to be aquatinted with the skills and techniques to access the information and knowledge with significantly enhanced, new and available technologies. The widespread use of ICT which is an abbreviation of Information and Communication Technology can be seen in almost all the spheres of life. It can involve from multimedia, PCs to the Internet and the World Wide Web. Meaning of ICT is elaborated as: UNI defined ICT “as forms of technology that are used to transmit, process. store, create, display SCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has share or exchange information by electronic means.”(https://en.unesco.org) As described in the definition by the UNESCO, it is the use of electronic media to compose, edit, delete, create and processing information using personal computer, scanners. smart phones, digital camera, ete.; storing information using CD, DVD, Pen drives, microchips, etc; displaying it using projectors, smart phones, television, computers, printers, elc.: PART ~ Il] Peer Reviewed Reforeed and UGC Listed Journal No. : 40776 2 VOLUME - VIII, ISSUE = [- JANUARY - MARCH - 2019 AJANTA - ISSN 2277 - 5730 - IMPACT FACTOR - 5 (ow. sjifactor.com) transmitting and exchanging it using internet facilities as e mails, video conferencing, teleconferencing, or other applications developed for communication purpose. According to Collins dictionary ICT refers to activities or studies involving computers and other electronic technology.” (www. collinsdictionary.com) ICT simply means to involve a range of available technologies to access and share information. It gives emphasis on communication technologies. This may include the use of electronic devices as computers, projectors, mobile phones, ipad, etc. and tools like internet, wireless networks, € mail, instant messaging, chat, blogging, wiki, social bookmarking, social sites, web conferencing and other communication mediums. Information and communication technologies have been strengthening the capabilities and possibilities of people, for instance people are able to communicate in real time with others from different places using video calling, video conferencing, etc. These modem technologies have come up with the concept of “Global Village’ in which people can communicate and can remain in touch with each other as if they are neighbors, That's why ICT in context with society becomes the subject of various research India is dreaming of Digital India and forwarding steps toward it with the encouragement of central and state government which has employed the concept of E-Governance that offers citizen various online services right from paying bills of electricity. receiving important certificates, applying for various job and exams in government and so on. Considering the quick and easy access to information, concepts like e-Banking, e- commerce, e-business, e-shopping, e-entertain, e-aadhar, e-filling, e-bill, e-hospital, e-trade, etc. have emerged working very effectively, Thus ICT has reached every muck and comer of every aspect of our life. How can education system be untouched by ICT? Application areas of ICT are unlimited, in the present paper: we have focused on how ICT is used in education, to be more précised for learning and assessment purpose. 1.2. ICT in Education John Dewey, American Philosopher, Psychologist and Educational Reformer states that “Education is the process of living through a common reconstruction of experiences. It is the development of all those capacities in the individual which will enable him to control his environment and fulfill his possibilities.” Thus education is imparting knowledge, information, skills and techniques to make life mature and develop one’s capabilities to create better PART ~ Il] Peer Reviewed Reforeed and UGC Listed Journal No. : 40776 3B VOLUME - VIII, ISSUE = [- JANUARY - MARCH - 2019 AJANTA - ISSN 2277 - 5730 - IMPACT FACTOR - 5 (ow. sjifactor.com) ‘opportunities for him and to achieve goals in life. Education plays an immense role in the life of an individual and in society also. Therefore, it should be more inclusive and comprehensive. reflecting and bridging the practical realities and digital world together. It has become inevitable to use new and available technology in education at all levels to make teaching and learning, more effective and meaningful. It has potential to do the best with higher education classrooms as it involves active and self paced learning. That's why the concepts like e-learning, e-book, e- library, e-course, e-journals, ete are used and popular nowadays. ICT can be used in various and in almost all field of education such as a Academic: e.g. planning instructions, collecting study material, teaching using different aids, learning, ete. exchanging or sharing study material, etc. b. Administration: e.g. management, admission process, scholarships, students and teachers documentations, e-profiles, administrating financial, technological resources, et. ©. Monitoring of Continuous Progress Evaluation (CPE): e.g. examining students for their assessment, evaluation, creating and generating reports, gi ing feedback to students as well as parents, communicating with students, parents and other concerned persons, ete. “Teachers are the felicitators who interact with the leamers, to help them with feedback or evolution needed for bridging the gaps between their understanding and content or it and other learners’ thoughts in online higher education.”(Mili Saha, 2019) ICT in education gives tremendous opportunities to teachers as well as learners to enhance their knowledge and skills, “E-learning is essentially imparting education through computer and network enabled digital technologies which include among other things, internet, intranet, computer, satellite TV, CDROM, audio and video resources."( Dr. flossy D’souza, 2016). ICT has made it easier and convenient to obtain education anywhere irrespective to place and time. Nowadays, several universities and recognized institutions also offer free online courses, tests, assignments, or projects, etc. In the classrooms also the use of ICT becomes more effective if blended leaming , the combination of e-learning and face to face interaction with teacher takes place. "E-learning is the use of new multimedia technologies and the Intemet to improve the quality of learning by facilitating access to resources and services, as well as remote PART ~ Il] Peer Reviewed Reforeed and UGC Listed Journal No. : 40776 rn VOLUME - VIII, ISSUE = [- JANUARY - MARCH - 2019 AJANTA - ISSN 2277 - 5730 - IMPACT FACTOR - 5 (ow. sjifactor.com) exchange and collaboration” (Alonso et al., 2005). ICT is offering multiple pathways to make learning learner- centered and self customized or self directed as learners can collect, edit customize, share and exchange information on their own pace. Teacher can facilitate leaming by employing various forms of e- leaming as Technology Enhanced Leaming (TEL), Computer Based Instructions (CBI), Computer Assisted / Aided Instructions(CAD, Internet Based Training (CBT), Web Based Trait ing (WBT), Online Education, Computer Mediated Instructions, Virtual Learning. m-learning. Thus, educators need to utilize diversified ways to offer education to technology loving generation to make it more efficacious, productive and constructive. 122. CT im Assessment The leaming objectives should identify the purpose of the lesson in terms of three dimensions: the focus for the pupils’ leaming: the focus for ICT capabilities; and the ICT skills and techniques required to support the activity. "(Avril Loveless, 2003) Assessment and evaluation of the students is an inescapable part of the educational practices. Assessment is examining students for assessing the learning outcomes if they match with learning expectations, Based on the individual assessment and analysis, teachers determine the strategies to improve leaming. Modem digital devices used to assess the students’ learning can give a wide range of opportunities to monitor students’ educational performances in classrooms too. ICT can be involved in every type of assessment (formative, summative, diagnostic, assessment for skills, ete.) “An increasing number of large scale tests are embracing testing by technology. These testing programmes are capitalizing on the capacities of technology to support logistical assessment functions including test development, delivery adaption, scoring and reporting” (Edys S. Quellmalz). Teachers can assess learning and performance of the students with computers (online or offline) or other electronic devices like smartphones, ipad, ete which can assist systematically in designing, conducting tests and giving feedback. ICT helps teachers to develop various testing tasks, to convey tasks to students, to record their responses, to analyze and to give feedback or reports to students, Benefits of Computer Assisted/Aided Assessment ‘* _Itbrings precision in assessment as it gives precise and accurate feedback © Itbrings retiabil ty as it produces reliable and consistent results regardless of time and place © Ithelps to maintain objectivity in assessment. Challenges in the use of ICT in Learning and Assessment ‘Though, ICT based learning is beneficial, it has some pitfalls as well. The procurement of ICT facilities and maintaining them is expensive, a huge sum of amount is needed to update and upgrade softwares or other sources related to ICT. There is a tremendous digital material available on internet, so students may get misguided if source is not authentic. Many softwares, applications, mobile apps, social sites are being developed: it may confuse leamers if they are not guided properly. Teacher and students may face difficulties if they do not possess required technical skills. Excessive use of ICT in education may decrease teacher student interactions which is the soul of education system, There are some limitations in assessing the students” conceptual understanding as ICT tools may only test lower level understanding of students 1.4 Conelu ion However, ICT has become an integral part of education as the meteoric growth in ICT technologies is taking place. Teachers need to implement these changes to raise the standards of teaching and learning process. If used with integrated electronic tools and with blended teaching, it can help teachers to achieve the aim of education References 1, Abbott Chris, 2001, Changing Education, London And New York 2.
