Topic 3 - Finance Deadline - 22nd December 2024 (11:59pm)

● GOAL: Students will analyze the financial performance of one international business by
calculating key financial ratios and writing a comprehensive report on each company’s
background, operations, financial health, and potential strategies for improvement.

● ROLE: You are a Business student and you are researching and applying the concepts and
content to the context (to a real world business organization of your choice) and writing a short
project report.

● AUDIENCE: The IB Business Management Teacher

● SITUATION: Prepare a REPORT to analyze the following aspects of the company. Your report
must include the following:

Part 1: Company Background Research (200 words for each company)

You will be researching three major telecom companies in Bahrain.


BATELCO, ZAIN and STC

1. Where does the company operate?


➔ Investigate the history of the company.
➔ Identify the country and region where it is based.
2. What is the type of company?
➔ Determine if it is a sole trader, partnership, private limited company, or public limited
company.
3. What services/products does the company offer?
➔ Provide details about their main products or services.
4. Sector Classification:
➔ Classify the company into one of the three sectors: primary (extraction of raw
materials), secondary (manufacturing), or tertiary (services).
Part 2: Prepare:
1. Income statement (Profit & Loss Account) for each company
2. Statement of financial position (Balance sheet) for each company

Part 3: Financial Ratio Calculations (use tables or graphs)


For each selected business, calculate the following ratios for both 2022 and 2023:
1. Profitability Ratios:
➔ Gross Profit Margin = (Gross Profit / Revenue) x 100
➔ Profit Margin = (Net Income before interest and tax / Revenue) x 100
2. Efficiency Ratio:
➔ Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) = (Net profit before interest and tax / Capital
Employed) x 100 (Capital employed = total non-current liabilities + Share Capital +
Retained profit)
3. Liquidity Ratios:
➔ Current Ratio = Current Assets / Current Liabilities
➔ Quick Ratio = (Current Assets - Inventories) / Current Liabilities

Part 4: Financial Analysis Report (300 words)


After preparing the financial statements and calculating the ratios, write a report that includes:
➔ A summary of your findings regarding each company’s operations and market
presence.
➔ A detailed comparison of the financial statements and ratios for the companies
➔ Comments on the financial situation of each company based on trends observed in
their financial statements, profitability (Gross Profit Margin & Profit Margin), efficiency
(Return on Capital Employed), and liquidity ratios (Current ratio & Quick ratio) over
2022 and 2023.

Part 5: Strategic Recommendations (200 words)


Based on your analysis in Parts 2 - 4, suggest TWO strategies that each company could implement
to improve its financial health. Consider aspects such as cost reduction, revenue enhancement,
operational efficiency improvements, or market expansion.
