Phonics

: a method of teaching beginners to read and pronounce words by learning the phonetic value of letters, letter groups, and especially
syllables.

Phonics is a teaching method that helps children learn how letters relate to sounds. It can help children improve their
reading and spelling skills, and expand their vocabulary.
What is phonics?
Phonics is the process of matching letters to the sounds they make in spoken English.
For example, the letter "n" makes the sound "/n/".
Children learn to blend sounds together to decode words.
Benefits of phonics
Phonics helps children understand words, sounds, and pronunciations.
It can help children grasp complex concepts.
Phonics can make learning fun.
It can help children expand their vocabulary.
Effective phonics instruction Links phonemic awareness to phonics, Is taught explicitly and systematically, Provides
opportunities for reading and writing practice, Includes flexible instruction, and Is taught as part of an integrated literacy
program.

How Do You Teach phonics?

In the field of beginning reading, there are two basic schools of thought in the U.S. today. One emphasizes "whole
language" teaching, which relies on teaching a lot of reading; the other emphasizes phonics, teaching how letters and
syllables correspond to sounds. Phonics instruction may be especially difficult in English, since English has the most difficult
spelling of any Western language. Consider the various ways we create the f *sound in *cough, photo, *and *giraffe,
or the sh sound in special, issue, vicious, *and *portion, or the k sound in tack, quiet, and shellac, and how we
pronounce the o in do, core, lock, *and *bone, or the ea in lead, ocean, idea, and early. Teaching phonics
obviously isn't an easy job, but it's probably an important one.
To teach phonics, you can start with simple letter sounds and gradually introduce more complex words. The goal is to help
children understand the relationship between written and spoken language.
Step 1: Teach letter sounds
Start with a group of letters that can be combined to make words, like S, A, T, P, I, N
Teach children to see a letter and say the sound it makes
Use songs and videos to help children learn letter sounds
Step 2: Teach blending
Have children practice sounding out simple words with three letters, like "sit" or "pat"
Teach children how to blend individual sounds together to say a word
Start with CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words, then move on to CCVC and CVCC words
Step 3: Teach digraphs
Teach children consonant digraphs like "ch", "sh", and "ng"
Teach children vowel digraphs like "ea", "oo", and "ai"
Introduce "tricky words", also known as common exception words
Step 4: Reinforce skills
Read aloud phonics-based stories
Provide opportunities for children to practice blending in context
Use worksheets to practice blending skills
Play games like "hunt the word"
Encourage children to read to you and help them sound out words

Here are some games that can help teach phonics:

 Phonics dice: Write a letter on each side of a pair of dice and have students roll them and say the letter sound
 I Spy: Say "I spy with my little eye something that begins with..." and have students identify the sound
 Phonics charades: Students act out words while others guess the sounds and letters
 Phonics hopscotch: An active game that can help students learn letters, sounds, and letter patterns
 Phonics bingo: Create bingo cards with letters or sounds and have students mark off the corresponding letters or
sounds when called out
 Play dough letters: Students roll play dough to make letters and CVC words
 Word ladder: Students create a chain of words by changing one letter at a time
 Go Fish: Students ask for capital or lowercase letters or specific letter sounds
