SWACHH BHARAT MISSION

Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) , Swachh bharat abhiyan, or clean India Mission is a country wide
campaign initiated by the Government of India on 2 October 2014 to eliminate open defecation and
Improve solid waste management and create open Defecation Free (ODF) Villages. It is India’s largest
cleanliness mission.

Background :- It is a restructed version of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan which was launched by the
congress in 2009.

The campaign’s official name is in Hindi. In English translates to “ clean India Mission “ The campaign
was officially launched on 2 0ctober 2014 at rajgath, New delhi by the prime minister of India Narendra
Modi. The Mission was split into two parts : rural and urban. In rural areas “SBM – Gramin and In
urban areas “SBM –urban. ‘’SBM – gramin was financed and monitored through the ministry of
Drinking water and sanitation where as ‘’SBM’ urban was overseen by the ministry of Housing and urban
affairs.

Funding :- The campaign was financed by the Government of India and state government. The formor
released $ 5.8 billion (Rs 40,700 crore ) of funds for toilet construction in 7,00,000 villages. The
government provided subsidy for the construction of nearly 90 million toilets between 2014 – 2019.
Although some Indians between especially in rural areas choose not use them . The compaign was
criticized for using coercive approaches to force people to use toilets. Some people were stopped from
Government benefits.

Promotional campaigns & Brand Ambassadors :- More than 3 million government employees ,12 crore
school and college students , 6.25 lakh volunteers, 2.5 lakh panchayat leaders, lakh of public and more
than 50 celebrities are participating to this movement.

Also the P.M has been the chief communicator of this scheme. He wrote a letter to all 2,50,000 village
presidents all over country and encouraged them to reach out to people in their villages for sanitation
services. From 2014 to 2018 P.M. narendra modi selected the public figures to propagate this campaign
like Sachin tendulkar , Amitabh bachchan , virat kohil , ms dhoni , suresh raina , priyanka chopra, Baba
Ramdev , salman khan ,pawan kalyan etc. And in 2024 Farha parween is the brand ambassador for
Swach Bahrat mission .

Planned Initiaties :- The Government appointed CPWD ( central public work deparment ) with the
responsibility to dispose of waste from Government offices. The ministry of Railway also planned to
have the facility of cleaning on demand , clean bed rolls from automatic laundries, bio toilets ,dustbing
in all non ac coaches. The Swachh Bharat , Swachh vidyalya campaign was launched by the minister of
Human resources development. Separate toilet facilities for male and female students have been
established in school under the ‘Swachh Bharat ,Swachh vidyalya’ scheme.
The success of SBM is not just a result of government initiaties but also the active participation of
ordinary citizens. Campaigns like ‘Swachhta Hi seva ‘ moblised millions of volunteers nation wide to
partcipate in cleanliness drives. This years motto is ‘Swabhav Swachhata Sanskaar Swachhata’. Cities like
indore , surat, and navi Mumbai have consistently ranked high and encouraging other to follow suit.

 Health Impact :- Inadequate sanitation is a major cause of waterbone diseases like diarrhea ,
Cholera and typhoid, leading to high morbidity and mortality rates ,Especially among children
under five (5). According to a world health organization (WHO) report, poor sanistation in India
caused around 3 lakhs child death annually before SBM was launched . As per the recent Nature
Report , SBM’s drives signficiant reductions in infant mortality rates by averthing 60,000 –
70,000 child death annually .

Conclusion :- As the mission complets ten years in this month. It has achieved several remarble success.
Now it is our collective responsibility to maintain the process made and ensure a clean and healthy
environment for future generation.
