Brief Description of Activity Loading & Off-loading with Truck Mounted Crane

1 Purpose

This procedure is to ensure that the activities of Loading & off-loading with truck mounted crane of materials and equipment are
properly identified and carried out in a safe and systematic manner.

2 Scope

This procedure shall apply to the construction and maintenance of rail signalling projects.

3 Responsibilities

16.2 & 8.1 Appointee's to ensure implementation of this safe work procedure.

8.5 Appointee to ensure this safe work procedure is communicated to and understood by all workers involved in this task.

8.7 & 8.8 Appointee's to ensure work is carried out in accordance with this safe work procedure.

4 Procedure

4.1 Loading

• Truck is to be in a safe stationary position in loading area.

• Stop blocks to be placed under truck wheel when stationary.

• Side flaps of truck’s loading bin to be opened for loading.

• Ladder to be used to access or get onto loading bin.

• Weight of load to be evenly distributed on the back of truck.

• Materials and equipment is to be secured with tie-downs and checked before transporting.

• Pre-start checklist to be completed daily.

4.2 Off-loading

• Truck is to be in a safe stationary position in off-loading area.

• No off-loading of material from moving truck.

• Stop blocks to be placed under truck wheel when stationary.

• Side flaps of truck’s loading bin to be opened for loading.

• Ladder to be used to access or get onto loading bin.

• Materials and equipment is to be un-tied.

• Materials and equipment is to be passed between employees with care.

• No materials are to be thrown, pushed or rolled from truck.

• Supervisor to ensure materials is placed safe and neat in laydown area.

• Materials in laydown area to be barricaded where required.

4.3 Housekeeping

• Housekeeping to be done on an on-going basis.

• Access and walkways to be cleared of materials, tool or equipment.

• Barricading to be instated where required and inspected regularly.

• Monthly Inspections to be carried out

5 Training

Risk Assessment training on driving on site to be done with all workers on site. Daily safe task instruction and toolbox talks to be
done on an ongoing basis.

6 Personal Protective Equipment

Overall, safety boots, reflective vest and gloves is the mandatory PPE required with manual handling of material and equipment.
Hard hats, goggles, dust masks, hearing protection or any other PPE will be recommended by the 8.5 Appointee as required.
