Preventive Actions For RSL Failures
Preventive Actions For RSL Failures
Synopsis
RSL Failure
A RSL is a list of hazardous chemicals that are restricted below a certain threshold in finished
textile products. And RSL Failure is when a restricted substance is detected on the final
finished article.
RSL Failures are often very expensive for the manufacturers, and it can result in an image
loss. It is easier to prevent a failure rather than treat the end product once the failure has
occurred.
Every factory should have a RSL Compliance plan in place which defines the tests required
per substrate and the testing frequency.
There are two preventive actions for ensuring that there are no RSL non-conformances. These
are:
• Process precautions
• Process parameters implementation and validation
a) Process precautions:
Process precautions are mainly concerned with avoiding chemicals and scenarios that can
cause RSL failures, based on experience and knowledge. Some of the examples of process
precautions that can help to prevent RSL failures are given below:
1. A mixture of pigment black 7 and pigment orange 13 or pigment orange 34 can lead
to the release of 3, 3’-dichlorobenzidine, which is a banned amine.
2. Para-Chloroaniline, a banned amine, is usually found in Reactive Black 5.
1. Free formaldehyde limits can exceed RSL limits if the conditions for application of
Resin are incorrect, such as curing temperature, time or dosage.
2. Heavy metal limits from dyes can exceed RSL limits if the application of the dye is
not done as per the maximum recommended depth provided by the dye supplier.
In case a failure is detected, a methodical approach should be followed to find the root cause.
Once the positive chemical is identified, it should be replaced with the safer alternatives after
discussing with the chemical suppliers.
Test reports for finished articles – along with the remnant sample sent to the laboratory with a
digital photograph– should be preserved for any future reference. All reports with RSL
failures should be filed with the Corrective and Preventive Action Plan for the failure to
prevent recurrence in the future.
