Grade II – III
(Summer Break Homework 2024)

1
Grade II – III English Summer Activities

Let’s keep learning through the summer! Below are some fun activities where you’ll get to read
from around the world, watch some videos, play lots of learning games and write your heart out!

Keep an English Activity Journal or simply create a Word or Google doc as one. This can be
submitted in person or posted in your Google Classroom. You may use your Grade II English
notebook as your Summer English Activity Journal.

Soft copies of this document and attached resources can be accessed in your Grade II English
Google Classroom. Happy learning 

Listening

They say, if you’re not listening, you’re not learning. So, let’s listen closely while watching the
videos below! Remember to be an active listener; not getting distracted and understanding what is
said. 

1. Learn how to organize your school bag by listening to these steps

https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/how-videos/how-organise-your-school-bag .
Check your listening comprehension by doing the activity and playing the game at the same link.
You can also try and recall the steps to teach a younger sibling or cousin how to organize their bag. This will be a self-check of
how good a listener you are 
2
This video will also help you make your instructional poster in the writing activities section.
2. Minny, the elephant, escapes from the circus. What adventures will she have? Watch and find out!
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/short-stories/circus-escape . You can also read the transcript while or post watching.
Retell this story to your siblings or friends. Also, discuss with your family if you agree with animals being used for circuses.
3. We use our senses every day. Listen to this poem about the different things we see, smell, hear, touch and taste!
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/poems/senses .
Now, play the listening comprehension games and do the follow up activities on the same page.
Next write a little poem or a small note about what all you can sense around you.
4. Did you know that insects are disappearing? Watch this video to find out why and to know what you can do to help.
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/video-zone/insect-extinction . If you have difficulty understanding the Australian
accent, read the transcript on the same link.
Next, play the games and do the activities there. Then, in your journal, make a list of steps that you can take to help stop insect
extinction. Also, spread the word and save the bugs!

Speaking

It’s not only what you say, it’s also how you say it. Do the following speaking activities to build your confidence, speak fluently and be a
better communicator.

1. Play the ‘Would you rather’ game with your family and friends using questions of your choice from the ones given in the resource
folder and attached here too. Ask the question ‘Would you rather…’ and then ask why. Have fun while people answer your funny
questions! You can get creative and make up your own questions, hold a mic and pretend to be a TV show host or better still, film

3
one or two interviews! Have Mummy help you upload these videos in your Google Classroom. Else, you could simply write a
short paragraph about the best response.
2. Do you like practising your English pronunciation? Have fun saying some tongue twisters at
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/tongue-twisters. Saying tongue twisters can be difficult at first, so don't worry if you
can't do it very well to begin with. Just keep practicing! You can also try
playing it with others, I bet you’ll be better than them!
3. Choose a story or a book from the Reading section below. After reading it,
your job is to convince others to read it. Make a one minute speech to your
family, friends, cousins or neighbours – whoever you can convince to read
the book – telling them about why you like the book and why you think they
should also read it. If they do, your persuasion skills are great, if they don’t,
try again! Lastly, write a note in your journal telling your teacher about your
experience.

Remember to speak correct English at all times ☺If you have problems saying a
word, ask an elder to check it for you at https://www.merriam-webster.com/ by
entering the word and clicking the speaker icon to hear the correct pronunciation.
It’s okay to make mistakes, that’s how one learns. ☺

Reading

They say reading gives us some place to go even when we have to stay where we are! So, read away to explore!

1. Read the following from your Grade II English Learner’s Book. You may want to read aloud to a sibling.
4
a. A non-fiction information text - What is a drone? – pg 152 – 153
b. Poems by Michael Rosen – Busy Day and Riding Down to Boxland – pg 164 and 168

2. I have downloaded some fiction story books for you and kept them in the Resource Folder.
They are listed below; read the one that interests you.

ready to take a stroll in the exquisite garden of at least two of these books? Come, let’s!
a. The Wind and the Sun – ORTR - OUP g. Sly Fox and Red
b. The Stubborn Mule – ORTR – OUP Hen – Paramount

d. The Golden Touch – NOPERS 2 – OUP the Angry Owl -
e. Town Mouse and Country Mouse – Jolly Phonics Readers Paramount
Level 4
f. Rumpelstiltskin - Jolly Phonics Readers Level 4

Writing

Every child is a born writer and so are you!

Choose any three of the following tasks and set to writing creatively. Remember to plan, write and improve!

1. Review how to gather ideas and write a unified paragraph at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp4uyFzk5Y4 and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKlrdZ5uAQo .
Now, in your activity journal, plan and write a paragraph about The Importance of Road Safety or The Importance of Tree
Plantation.

6
2. Write an interesting story based on either set of pictures given in the
Resource Folder. Notice the characters, where they are and what they are
doing. Think of the words and dialogues you will use. Then set to write your
story in three paragraphs. Don’t forget to reread to check for any missing
words and spelling or grammar errors. Also, remember to give your story a
suitable title.
3. Review story writing techniques by watching a quick video at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYWziGxR07g . Then, write a three
paragraph story beginning with any one of the following. Before writing the
actual story, plan out the beginning, middle and end. Also jot down the
vocabulary and dialogues you will be making use of.
i. Last Saturday, Tina went to the zoo with her mum. She had been there
earlier but this visit was different - there was something wrong! The
lions hissed and the snakes roared, the monkeys brayed while the
zebras giggled away! …
ii. One stormy night Ali was alone in his bedroom playing with his favourite teddy when he heard someone call him. He didn’t
recognize the voice, but it was a sweet little one…
4. Make an instructional poster on ‘How to Punctuate a Sentence’ or ‘How to Tie your Shoe Laces’. Refer to pg 57 of your Learner’s
Book to take a look at how you made posters in Grade II. Use a chart paper, or a page in your journal or take help from an elder to

7
make one in Print Artist or MS Word. Make your poster attractive by using flow charts, pictures, and headings. Remember to use
command words and punctuate your sentences properly.

Grammar and Punctuation

1. Grammar can be fun! Ask a parent, grandparent or elder sibling to watch the video given at
https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/english/primary-grammar/grammar-year-2-age-6-7/ and play the games
mentioned there with you. I can imagine how much fun you’ll have with all those grammar and
vocabulary games!
2. Practice your grammar and punctuation by doing pg 261 and 262 of CPE Learner’s Book 2.
3. Try out the synonym worksheet attached.
4. Have fun reciting the given antonym poem and doing the antonyms worksheet.
5. Explore the what and how of prepositions at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV5xwP5E9qU and then do the attached
worksheet.

Vocabulary

Every alternate day, choose a topic of your choice, learn the new English words given
and play amazing vocabulary games at this wonderful resource!
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/word-games

8
Phonics and Spelling

1. CPE Learner’s Book 2 has a treasure of activities to practice

phonics and spelling rules that you’ve learnt already. Do page 254 to 259 in your
journal or on your book.
2. Attached is a list of words that are spelled without using normal spelling rules.
Memorize this in fun ways for example by looking at the words and then covering
them with a hand to say the spelling aloud, or by writing the words down without
looking at them, by teaching a younger sibling, or asking an older one to take
dictation. You may use white boards, your journal or tablets for this.
3. Get ready to do a quick alphabetical order quiz! Use the ‘Know Your ABC’ resource to do
it.

I’m sure you loved these summer activities!

And learnt a lot on the way! Keep learning,
keep growing! Good luck for the next
academic year!

Love,

Your Grade II English Teacher

Topic: Measuring Your Carbon Footprint

n_Activities%20508_compliant_small.pdf)

Many human activities such as cutting

down too many trees, generating
electricity and causing pollution are
harming our planet. These activities
release gases into the atmosphere called
greenhouse gases (including carbon
dioxide), which slowly warm the planet,
causing climate change. The amount of
greenhouse gases we produce is referred
to as our “carbon footprint.” Larger
footprints mean more damage is being
caused to the planet compared to smaller
footprints.

Investigate how much of an impact your daily activities are leaving on Earth
by creating a carbon footprint for your family.

Instructions:

1. Colour the carbon footprint picture given below, starting from the rings
in the center, by following the instructions below.

2. Make a list of ways you could help make your carbon footprint smaller.

Make sure to keep this carbon footprint and your list to share with your
classmates and teachers when school reopens!
