Directions: Read the scenario below and use the information to complete the task explained in the next
set of directions.

Scenario:

Wow, sophomore year is harder than freshman year! You have been busy this semester with your
increased coursework and after school SHS activities (clubs/band/sports). You were supposed to
be done reading a book for your English class but you have fallen behind. You still have about ½ of
the book to finish. Today is the summative assessment on the entire book and there are 3
free-response essay questions that will be completed on your iPad. Your parents are aware that
you have fallen behind; however, they said that they will not call you out to miss this class. Your
parents feel that it was your responsibility to have this book read and that you had plenty of time.
It’s currently 1st period and your assessment is during 7th period.

Directions: Use the DECIDE model to explain how you would proceed in this situation.

Determine the Problem

D The problem is that the student has fallen behind in their English class reading assignment and still has half of the book to
nish. They have a summative assessment on the entire book, with three free-response essay questions, is at 7th period and
it is currently 1st period. Despite their busy schedule with increased coursework, as it is their sophomore year, and after-
school activities, their parents won't excuse them from the assessment, considering it the student's responsibility to have
completed the reading in time.

Identify your Values

I To be honest in my work and assessments even if I know for certain that I won’t be able to
get a good grade. And not to skip classes without my parents knowing. Additionally, I want
to make sure I have a good relationship with my teachers and parents and to continue having
their trust and respect.

Decide & Create an Action Plan

D Option 4: Talk to your teacher about how you were not able to nish the book and ask if you can take the assessment tomorrow.

Action Plan:

1. Before 1st Period:

Gather your materials, including the partially read book and your iPad.
Take a few moments to arrange your thoughts and rehearse what you want to say to your teacher.

2. During 1st Period:

Politely request permission from your current teacher to speak with your English teacher if possible.

3. Between 1st and 7th Periods:

Use any free period or lunch break to try to read as much of the remaining half of the book as possible.

4. During 7th Period:

Approach your English teacher before the assessment begins. Be respectful and explain your situation.
Express your genuine remorse for not nishing the book and acknowledge your responsibility.
Request if there's a possibility to take the assessment tomorrow, emphasizing your commitment to nishing the book tonight and being better prepared for the
assessment.
Be open to any alternative solutions your teacher might o er. They may provide some options to help you make up for the missed assessment.

5. After 7th Period:

If your teacher agrees to let you take the assessment tomorrow, use the evening to nish reading the book and prepare for the essay questions.

Evaluate your Decision

E In this case, even though I know I won't be able to achieve a decent score, I value honesty in my work and
assessments. In addition, I think it's important to keep a positive relationship with my parents and professors
while earning their respect and not skipping classes without telling them. Considering these criteria, selecting
option 4 makes sense because it entails talking to my teacher about my inability to nish the book and
requesting permission to take the assessment the following day. It shows that I'm willing to accept responsibility
for my behavior and acknowledge that I've fallen behind in my reading. Even if I might not get a perfect score, it
shows how committed I am to being truthful about my academic performance and keeping a good relationship
with my parents and teacher.
