GDJP Assignment 1

This document outlines an assignment for the Gas Dynamics and Jet Propulsion course, detailing various problems related to compressible flow and isentropic flow. It includes calculations for stagnation temperature, mass flow rate, and area of cross section at entry and exit under specific conditions. The assignment is intended for students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering for the academic year 2024-2025.

ASSIGNMENT-1
Regulation : 2022
Faculty Name: Mr. Mahendran P. Designation/Dept: AP/MECH
Sub. Name : Gas Dynamics and Jet Propulsion Sub. code :22ME15102
Sem / Year : V /III Academic Year: 2024-2025

1. To derive the effect of Mach number on compressibility for

Compressible flow.

2. The pressure, temperature and fluid velocity of air at the entry of a

flow passage are 3 bar, 280 K and 140 m/s. The pressure,
temperature and velocity at the exit of a flow passage are 2 bar, 260
K and 250 m/s. The area of cross section at entry is 600 cm 2.
Determine for adiabatic flow,
a) Stagnation temperature
b) Maximum velocity
c) Mass flow rate
d) Area of cross section at exit.
Take ¥ = 1.4, R = 287 J/kg K.

3. Air (¥ = 1.4, R = 287 J/kg K) enters a straight axis symmetric duct at

300 K, 3.45 bar and 150 m/s and leaves it at 277 K, 2.058 bar and
260 m/s. The area of cross section at entry is 500 cm 2. Assuming
adiabatic flow determine
a) Stagnation temperature
b) Maximum velocity
c) Mass flow rate
d) Area of cross section at exit.
4. To derive the mass flow rate in terms of pressure ratio.

5. The pressure, temperature and Mach number at the entry of nozzle

are 2 bar, 300 K and 1.4 respectively. The exit Mach number is 2.4.
Determine the following for isentropic flow,
a) Velocity of sound at stagnation condition
b) The Maximum velocity
c) The Mach number M1* & M2*
d) Temperature and pressure at exit. Take ¥ = 1.3, R = 0.52 kJ/kg
K.

6. Air enters the nozzle from a large reservoir at 7 bar and 320° C. The
exit pressure of nozzle is 0.94 bar and mass flow rate is 3500 kg/h.
Calculate the following for isentropic flow
a) Throat area
b) Throat pressure
c) Throat velocity
d) Exit area
e) Exit Mach number
f) Maximum velocity
