Measures of Dispersion - 1

The document discusses Mean Deviation and its Coefficient, defining Mean Deviation as the mean of absolute deviations from an average (Arithmetic Mean, Median, or Mode). It provides examples of calculating Mean Deviation for monthly food expenditures and body temperatures, as well as analyzing anesthetic onset times for different drugs. The document emphasizes the importance of Mean Deviation as an absolute and relative measure of dispersion.

Measures of Dispersion

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Azam

Mean Deviation and its
Coefficient
Mean Deviation: Mean deviation is defined as the mean of absolute
deviations of X values taken from an average.
𝑥 − 𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝐷𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 (𝑀𝐷) =
𝑛
An average may AM, Median or Mode. For example
𝑥−𝐴𝑀 𝑓 𝑥−𝐴𝑀
𝑀𝐷𝐴𝑀 = , 𝑀𝐷𝐴𝑀 =
𝑛 𝑓
𝑥−𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 𝑓 𝑥−𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛
𝑀𝐷𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 = , 𝑀𝐷𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 =
𝑛 𝑓
𝑥 − 𝑀𝑜𝑑𝑒 𝑓 𝑥 − 𝑀𝑜𝑑𝑒
𝑀𝐷𝑀𝑜𝑑𝑒 = , 𝑀𝐷𝑀𝑜𝑑𝑒 =
𝑛 𝑓

MD is an absolute measure of dispersion and its relative measure

𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝐷𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
𝐶𝑜𝑒𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝐷𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 =
𝐴𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒

• Example: Given the monthly food expenditures of 15
students: 2450, 2460, 2455, 2441, 2448, 2440, 2452,
2444, 2446, 2459, 2461, 2449, 2455, 2451, 2452
• Compute Mean Deviation about AM and Median
• Solution: x

Arranged X
2440
𝑥 − 𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛

Home Work
• Example: Body temperature of 25 intertidal crabs
placed in air at 24.3 C:
25.8 24.6 26.1 22.9 25.1 27.3 24.0 24.5 23.9
26.2 24.3 24.6 23.3 25.5 28.1 24.8 23.5 26.3
25.4 25.5 23.9 27.0 24.8 22.9 25.4

• Compute Mean Deviation using

o Arithmetic Mean as an average
o Median as an average
