System Operating Lab#7-8

The document outlines the setup and configuration of a Failover Cluster involving two servers (FOC1 and FOC2) to ensure high availability and redundancy for services. It details the installation of necessary components such as DHCP, ISCS, and the configuration of a 30 GB drive. Additionally, it explains the theoretical concepts of redundancy and high availability, emphasizing their importance in maintaining continuous operations for the organization.

Theoretical part

1. What is the purpose of FOC [10-15]?

As an organization, we must guarantee a service level within our internal and external
customers, so they can have all resources available all the time they need them. The purpose
of the Failover Cluster is to provide high availability for the services provided by the servers.
This is done by creating a pool of servers that are connected together (cluster) by hardware
and software. The servers are actively monitored to verify that they are operating normally.

These servers have the same services running, with the difference that one of them is going to
be in an active mode providing the service, while the other is going to be in a passive mode.
This means that in case one of the operating servers goes down, the other server is going to
take its place, thus the operations of the organization won’t be affected.

Having a Failover Cluster is important to the organization because it maintains its operation
active and running even though an event occurred to one of the servers. This translates into
better performance for the company.

2. What is the meaning of redundancy [5-10]?

Redundancy means to have a spare of the same resource we are currently using, so in case
something happens to the main resource we can still have this backup to operate. Its main
purpose is to guarantee we have something to work with in case a disaster occurs and our
main component is gone. Therefore, this backup needs to have enough resources to supply at
least the critical component o services in order to keep the operations running. The goal here
is to have another resource regardless of how fast we shift from each other.

3. What is High Availability?

High availability means that we have a backup resource and that it won’t be a downtime of the
operations if something happens to our services. This concept guarantees operational levels
that are necessary in order to meet some regulations. The most important aspect we must
understand about high availability is that it should be automatic and fast, thus no human
intervention is needed.
