Junior School Grade 8 Learning Area: Mathematics

The document provides an overview of integers, defining them as whole numbers that can be positive, negative, or zero, and includes examples of both integers and non-integers. It explains how to represent integers on a number line and demonstrates the addition of integers through examples and visual aids. The lesson concludes with practice problems for students to solve in the next class.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

GRADE 8
LEARNING AREA: MATHEMATICS
Sub-strand: integers
INTEGERS: what is an
integer?

An integer is a whole
number (not a fractional
number) that can be
positive, negative, or zero.
Examples of integers

Examples of integers are:

-5, 1, 5, 8, 97, and 3,043.
Examples of numbers
that are not integers
are:
-1.43, 1 3/4, 3.14, .09,
and 5,643.1
Integers includes; zero, negative and positive
numbers without any decimal or fractional
parts.
They are numbers that represent whole things
without pieces either above (positive) or below
(negative) a standard value.
They also include zero.
WE CAN REPRESENT THESE NUMBERS ON A
NUMBER LINE: LETS HOW…..
For negative numbers i.e. we will
move towards the left side of the
zero. E.g. -5 we will move 4 steps
to the left side of the zero mark
 For positive integers, we will move towards
the right side of the zero mark.
We can add, subtract,
multiply and divide integers

Let us start with addition of

integers
Evaluate the following ;
i. -4 + 5 =
Represent the above on a number line
Solution
i. Using counters, select 4 black counters and 5 red counters
ii. Pair a black counter on a red counter and cancel them
iii. What you are left with gives us the answer.
Class what color is remaining?
Red.
How many red counters are left? Raise your hand up…..
One.
Class red counters represent what?
Hands up?
Red represent positive integers.
Therefore our answer is +1
Using a number line
Solution
1. Draw a number line
2. Go to -4 and move 5 steps towards the zero
mark
3. Where did you stop?
Class: yes James. At +1
Any question??????
Add the following integers and represent them
on a number line
1. +2 +5 =
2. –9 + +6 =
3. -7 + -6 =
4. 5 + 8 =
1 + -9 =
