Class IX A SKIT ON FRENCH REVOULUTION
REVOULUTION
Characters:
Setting: Hall s in the Palace of Versailles. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette are seated on their
thrones, surrounded by nobles and courtiers.
Louis XVI: (Addressing the court) My esteemed nobles and subjects, we face dire times indeed.
The treasury is nearly empty, and our debts weigh heavily upon us.
Marie Antoinette: (Worriedly) Mon cher, how did it come to this? The cost of war and the
extravagant court expenses have drained our coffers.
Finance Minister: (Approaching with a ledger) Your Majesty, the expenses have far exceeded
our income. The aid to the American colonies has added immensely to our debt burden.
Noble 1: (Haughtily) Your Majesty, we have honored our commitment to support the colonies
against the British. But surely, the burden of debt should not fall upon us alone.
Noble 2: (Agreeing) Indeed, taxes must be levied on all estates if we are to restore financial
stability.
Setting: The Estates-General convenes, with representatives from the three estates gathered.
Peasant 1: (Addressing the assembly) My fellow Third Estate members, we bear the brunt of
taxes while the nobles enjoy their privileges.
Peasant 2: (Nodding) It is unjust! We toil in the fields while they live in luxury. The Old
Regime must change!
Noble 1: (Dismissively) Peasants, know your place! The nobility has its duties and privileges
ordained by God.
Noble 2: (Condescendingly) Taxes are a necessary burden to maintain order and protect our
lands.
Louis XVI: (Wearily) My friends, I understand your grievances. We must find a way to
reconcile our financial woes without further burdening the people.
Marie Antoinette: (Quietly) Is there no solution that can satisfy all estates? Must our people
suffer under the weight of debt and taxation?
Finance Minister: (Stepping forward) Your Majesties, we must consider reforms that distribute
the tax burden equitably and promote economic growth.
Setting: Streets of Paris, where unrest among the common people grows.
Narrator: (Voiceover) As tensions escalated and the burden of taxes continued to weigh heavily
on the Third Estate, the seeds of revolution were sown. The Old Regime faced growing dissent,
leading to the events that would change the course of history forever.
Peasant 1: (Rallying the crowd) Brothers and sisters, the time for change is upon us! Down with
the Old Regime!
Peasant 2: (Shouting) No more taxes for the nobles! We demand equality and justice!
Louis XVI: (Regretfully) My people, forgive us for the injustices of the past. We must find a
new way forward together.
Marie Antoinette: (Sadly) Mon cher, can we quell this uprising? The storm is upon us.
Narrator: And so, amidst economic turmoil and social inequality, the French Revolution
erupted, heralding the end of the Old Regime and the dawn of a new era in French history.
