INTRODUCTION

The enhancement of mechanical properties of cement using bamboo fibers has

garnered significant attention in recent years due to the sustainable and cost-effective nature
of bamboo. Bamboo fibers, known for their high tensile strength and rapid growth, present a
promising alternative to synthetic fibers traditionally used in cement reinforcement. The
integration of bamboo fibers into cement composites has been shown to improve various
mechanical properties, including compressive and flexural strength, toughness, and
durability.

Several studies have explored the potential of bamboo fibers in cementitious

materials. For instance, the addition of treated bamboo fibers to latex-modified cement
mortars resulted in excellent mechanical properties, attributed to improved fiber adhesion and
the high strength of the latex-modified mortars (B. Akinyemi, T. Omoniyi 2018.). Similarly,
modified bamboo fibers treated with glycerol, aluminate ester, and silane demonstrated
increased flexural strength and enhanced durability in cement composites (Yang H. Banet al.
2020.) The use of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) with bamboo fibers has also
shown significantly improved load-bearing behavior, highlighting the potential of
this combination (Can Mark Bittner et al. 2022.)

Moreover, sustainable mortar mixtures incorporating bamboo fibers and fly ash have
been developed, showing improved fracture toughness and strain-softening behavior (M.
Maier, A. Javadian et al. 2020.). The reinforcement of cement-based composites with
cellulosic fibers from bamboo has led to remarkable improvements in flexural strength and
fracture toughness5. Comparative studies have also indicated that pre-treated bamboo fibers
can enhance the compressive and flexural strength of concrete, with optimal fiber dosages
identified for maximum strength6.

In addition to mechanical improvements, the use of bamboo fibers in concrete has

environmental and economic benefits. The incorporation of bamboo fibers can reduce the
extraction of natural resources and production costs, contributing to more sustainable
construction practices8. Alkali-treated bamboo fibers have been found to improve the
toughness, flexural strength, and splitting tensile strength of oil well cement, further
demonstrating the versatility of bamboo fibers in various cement applications9.
Overall, the integration of bamboo fibers into cement composites offers a promising
approach to enhancing mechanical properties while promoting sustainability in the
construction industry. The findings from various studies underscore the potential of bamboo
fibers as a viable reinforcement material, paving the way for their broader application in
cement-based materials.
