Paper – Business Mathematics
Semester - III

Course Outcome: On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:
CO1: Students will demonstrate a solid understanding of real functions as they relate to business and
economics, including cost functions, demand functions, revenue functions, profit functions, and break-even
points. They will be able to interpret and analyze these functions in practical business scenarios.
CO2: Students will develop proficiency in matrix algebra, including operations such as addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and finding the transpose of matrices. They will also demonstrate the ability to determine
matrix equality and compute matrix inverses using the adjoint method.
CO3: Students will be proficient in calculating determinants, particularly second and third-order determinants,
and using them to solve systems of linear equations. They will also demonstrate competence in applying
Cramer's rule to find solutions to such systems.
CO4: Students will be able to formulate linear programming problems (LPPs) mathematically, particularly
focusing on problems with up to two variables such as minimum cost and maximum profit problems. They will
also demonstrate the ability to solve LPPs using graphical methods to find optimal solutions.
CO5: Students will apply the mathematical concepts learned in this course, including real functions, matrix
algebra, determinants, and linear programming, to real-world business decision-making scenarios. They will
be able to analyze data, make informed decisions, and optimize outcomes using mathematical models and
techniques.
SYLLABUS
Unit-I :Function of Real Variable : Constant, Variable, Interval, Function, Illustrative examples
on value of a function. Functions related to business & economics, Cost Function, Demand
Function, Revenue function, Profit function, Break-even point, Graph of a function.
Unit-II : Matrix: Definition of a Matrix, , Algebra of matrices, Equality of Matrices, Transpose of
matrix, Inverse of matrix (by Adjoint method). Determinant: Definition of second & Third order
Determinant, calculation of values of determinants, Solution of system of linear equations by
Cramer’s rule.
Unit-III: Formulation of LPP: Mathematical formulation of L.P.P. upto 2 variables, minimum cost
problem, maximum profit problem. Solution of LPP: Graphical method of solution of L.P.P

Course Outcome: On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:

CO1: Students will understand and apply fundamental statistical concepts, including data classification,
tabulation, and creating frequency distributions
CO2 Students will be able to calculate and interpret measures of central tendency such as mean, mode, and
median, and apply these measures to analyze and summarize data effectively.
CO3: Students will calculate and interpret measures of variation, including range, quartile deviation, and
standard deviation. They will evaluate the significance and properties of these measures in statistical analysis
and apply appropriate measures of dispersion to compare data sets.
CO4: Students will analyze skewness and kurtosis in data distributions, understand their implications, and
apply statistical techniques to assess and interpret these measures.
CO5: Students will understand the concept of correlation, calculate and interpret simple correlation
coefficients using scatter diagrams and Karl Pearson's coefficient, and assess the significance of correlation
coefficients in data analysis. They will also understand the fundamentals of regression analysis, including
regression lines, equations, and coefficients, and apply regression analysis techniques to predict and model
relationships between variables.
SYLLABUS
Unit-I:Concept of statistics, classification, tabulation, frequency distribution. Measure of
central tendency: Mean, Mode, Median.
Unit-II : Dispersion: Measures of variation(Range, Quartile deviation and standard deviation),
Significance and properties of a good measure of variation. Skewness and Kurtosis. Concept and
Measure.
Unit-III: Correlation: Meaning and types of correlation, simple correlation, scatter diagram method,
Karl Pearson’s coefficient of correlation, Significance of correlation. Regression concept, regression
lines, regression equations and regression coefficient.

Course Outcome: On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:

CO1: Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of numerical values of functions and their derivatives,
including the ability to compute derivatives using appropriate methods.
CO2: Students will be able to apply numerical methods such as Bisection, Newton-Raphson method, and
Regula Falsi method to solve algebraic and transcendental equations accurately and efficiently.
CO3: Students will learn and apply direct methods like Gauss elimination and Jordan methods for solving
simultaneous linear equations, demonstrating proficiency in solving systems of equations using these
techniques.
CO4: Students will understand and utilize iterative methods such as Gauss-Seidel method for solving
simultaneous linear equations, showing competence in iterative techniques for solving complex mathematical
problems.
CO5: Students will apply the learned numerical methods to solve real-world problems, analyze the accuracy
and efficiency of these methods, and make informed decisions about selecting appropriate numerical
techniques based on problem characteristics.

CO3: Students will understand and utilize the Chi-square test for independence and goodness of fit,

CO4: Students will learn to apply the t-test for testing hypotheses about population means, including paired t-
tests and independent samples t-tests, showing competence in hypothesis testing for small sample sizes.
