Store your business data and access it according to your business processes within the Teamcenter
environment. When you create, manage, and distribute business data in Teamcenter applications,
Teamcenter retrieves data as you need it and then safely stores it again within the Teamcenter
data infrastructure.
Data infrastructure is the core of the Teamcenter environment and consists of two parts:
• Volume
Your enterprise data is stored in a secure repository called the Teamcenter volume. Your parts,
designs, specifications, files, and other critical documents are managed according to your
business processes.
You host the Teamcenter volume on a volume server, which you can locate for optimal access on
local or remote hardware or on a cloud network.
• Metadata
The essential information to manage your enterprise data is stored in the Teamcenter database.
A Teamcenter environment requires a supported relational database management system
(RDBMS) for Teamcenter metadata — data about the data, such as revisions, history, and other
tracking information.
Install your database system as directed by the software manufacturer, then you can use Teamcenter
Environment Manager (TEM) or Deployment Center to create a volume and install or update your
Teamcenter environment.
Your data model integrates your business processes and your data in a way that makes your users
more effective and efficient. How you define data and their relationships is key to helping users
find, analyze, and manipulate data.
The Teamcenter data model has two essential parts:
• Files and their properties
• Configure and extend the basic business data model to match your own business data.
• Report Teamcenter administration data to analyze and troubleshoot site behavior and information
access.
A well-designed data model organizes your product information into a format that can drive your
business decisions on a daily basis.
Protecting your assets helps your company provide business value to your customers. Control
access to your business data and processes when you:
• Configure secure authentication.
• Configure licensing.
• Configure rules that control access by user, group, role, organization, and workspace. Choose
from two ways to protect access to your data:
o Access Controls
o Access Manager
Configuring access to your product data puts the right information in the right hands at the right time.
Present product data in the context of your business processes to help users find just the information
they need, when they need it. Help users focus on what's important by suppressing information that
is not relevant to a task, workflow, or process.
• Set up organizational groups, roles, and users that provide the means to control data ownership
and access. You can set up workspaces for Active Workspace users.
• Set up basic user client applications, such as rich client and Active Workspace, to optimize your
users' experience. For instance, set preferences or apply themes.
• Set up indexing and searching to help users locate data objects and files in your business model.
Create reusable queries to simplify finding your product data.
You can also configure indexing and searching for Active Workspace users.
Configuring systems and applications to work together effectively enhances your users' performance
in their daily work.
Applications help users achieve a particular business outcome. An application might provide
functionality tailored to a specific industry or project, governmental compliance, or a distinct business
use case.
You can refine usability or add special-use applications that address a specific business purpose.
For instance:
• Implement one of many available applications or features that integrate with the Teamcenter
environment, including applications that you download separately from Teamcenter.
• Refine your existing Teamcenter applications for specific product, site, or business needs.
• Extend an existing application with your own customizations to Teamcenter behavior or user
interfaces.
