Presentation On Ozone Layer

The presentation discusses the ozone layer's role in absorbing harmful UV radiation and the consequences of its depletion, including increased health risks such as skin cancer and negative effects on agriculture and marine life. It identifies chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as the primary cause of ozone depletion and outlines preventive measures individuals and governments can take, such as reducing harmful emissions and adhering to international agreements like the Montreal Protocol. The conclusion emphasizes the urgent need for awareness and action to protect the ozone layer for the health of all living organisms.

PRESENTATION ON “Holes in ozone

layer and the probable damages’’

PRESENTED BY AAYOMI YADAV
IX-B
WHAT IS OZONE LAYER
The ozone layer or ozone shield is a
region of Earth's stratosphere that
absorbs most of
the Sun's ultraviolet radiation. It
contains a high concentration
of ozone (O3) in relation to other parts
of the atmosphere, although still small
in relation to other gases in the
stratosphere. The ozone layer contains
less than 10 parts per million of ozone,
while the average ozone concentration
in Earth's atmosphere as a whole is
about 0.3 parts per million. The ozone
layer is mainly found in the lower
portion of the stratosphere, from
approximately 15 to 35 kilometers (9
to 22 mi) above Earth, although its
thickness varies seasonally and
geographically.[1]

OZONE DEPLETION
Ozone layer depletion
causes increased UV
radiation levels at the
Earth's surface, which is
damaging to human
health. Negative effects
include increases in certain
types of skin cancers, eye
cataracts and immune
deficiency disorders. ... UV
rays also affect plant
growth, reducing
agricultural productivity.
CAUSES OF OZONE
DEPLETION
Chlorofluorocarbons.
Chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs
are the main cause of ozone

IMPACTS OF OZONE
DEPLETION
1)HUMAN HEALTH-Ozone layer
depletion causes increased UV
radiation levels at the Earth's surface,
which is damaging to human health.
Negative effects include increases in
certain types of skin cancers, eye
cataracts and immune deficiency
disorders.
2)AGRICULTURE-Ozone causes
considerable damage to plants around
the world, including agricultural crops
and plants in natural ecosystems.
Ozone damages plants by entering
leaf openings called stomata and
oxidizing (burning) plant tissue during
respiration. This damages the plant
leaves and causes reduced survival.
EFFECTS ON PLANTS AND
ANIMALS
EFFECTS ON PLANTS- Ozone causes
considerable damage to plants around
the world, including agricultural crops
and plants in natural ecosystems.
Ozone damages plants by entering
leaf openings called stomata and
oxidizing (burning) plant tissue during
respiration. This damages the plant
leaves and causes reduced survival.
EFFECTS ON ANIMALS- Scientists have
demonstrated a direct reduction in
phytoplankton production due to
ozone depletion-related increases in
UVB. UVB radiation has been found to
cause damage to early developmental
stages of fish, shrimp, crab,
amphibians, and other marine
animals.
IMPORTANCE OF OZONE
LAYER

Ozone is harmful at ground level

but high up the atmosphere
ozone layer plays a vital role in
the protection of all living beings.
The sun propagates ultraviolet
radiations which as an adverse
effect on living beings. This layer
absorbs the radiations and
prohibits them from entering the
outer surface of the earth. The
ozone layer resides in the
stratospheric layer of the earth’s
atmosphere. The layers which
occupy the lower part of the
atmosphere removes the
unwanted pollutants from the
earth’s surface.
MEASURES TO PREVENT THE OZONE
DEPLETION
• Avoid the consumption of gases dangerous to the ozone layer, due to
their content or manufacturing process. Some of the most dangerous
gases are CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), halogenated hydrocarbon, methyl
bromide and nitrous oxide.
• Minimize the use of cars. The best transport option is urban, bicycle, or
walking. If you use a car to a destination, try to carpool with others to
decrease the use of cars in order to pollute less and save.
• Do not use cleaning products that are harmful to the environment and to
us. Many cleaning products contain solvents and substances corrosive, but
you can replace these dangerous substances with non-toxic products such
as vinegar or bicarbonate.
• Buy local products. In this way, you not only get fresh products but you
avoid consuming food that has traveled long distances. As the more
distance traveled, the more nitrous oxide is produced due to the medium
used to transport that product.
• Maintain air conditioners, as their malfunctions cause CFC to escape into
the atmosphere.
MEASURES TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT

INTERNATIONAL MEASURES NATIONAL MEASURES

• The international treaty • The Montreal Protocol on
called The Montreal Substances that Deplete the
Protocol on Substances Ozone Layer (the Montreal
that Deplete the Ozone Protocol) is an international
Layer (Montreal Protocol) is agreement made in 1987. It
was designed to stop the
gradually eliminating the production and import of
production and ozone depleting substances
consumption of ozone and reduce their concentration

limit their damage to the protect the earth's ozone
earth's ozone layer. layer.
CONCLUSION
• Ozone layer depletion is a deep crisis which leads to increased UV-
B radiation reaching the surface of the Earth affecting humans and
all the living organisms.
• Anthropogenic activities this have been the main cause for ozone
layer depletion leading to global climatic changes in this century.
• This leads to a number of health problems like heat-related issues,
skin cancer, and various other ecological disturbances that affect
biotic life.
• Hence every individual should be well aware of the harmful effects
of all the causing agents of ozone layer depletion like CFC, plastics,
fossil fuel etc and should reduce and avoid using them.
• We all should pledge to preserve nature and make this world
sustainable for everyone to live.
