Chapter-10 Numerical Problems 2 (Lenses)

The document contains numerical problems related to lenses, including calculations for power, focal length, and image characteristics of various lens combinations. It covers scenarios involving both convex and concave lenses, detailing the use of the lens formula and magnification to determine image properties. The problems illustrate how to find the nature and size of images formed by different lens configurations.

Chapter-10: Light

Numerical Problems 2 (Lenses)

1. Two thin lenses of power +3.5 D and -2.5 D are placed in contact. Find
the power and focal length of the lens combination.
Given 𝑃1= +3.5 D
𝑃2= -2.5 D
Using P = 𝑃1+𝑃2
= 3.5-2.5 = +1 D
1
Now P =
𝑓 (𝑚)
f=+1 m = 100 cm (1 m = 100 cm)
2. A convex lens of focal length 25 cm and concave lens of focal length
10 cm are placed in contact with each other. Calculate the power of
lens combination.
Given 𝑓1= 25 cm,
Using P = 𝑃1+𝑃2
1 1
=
𝑓1(𝑚)
+ 𝑓 (𝑚)
2
100 100
= 25
- 10
= 4 -10 = -6 D, diverging
nature (concave lens)

3. The power of combination of two lenses XY is 5 D. If the focal length

of lens X is 15 cm, state the focal length and nature of lens Y.
Given P = 5 D, 𝑓𝑋= 15 cm
P=𝑃𝑋+𝑃𝑌
1 1
5= 𝑓𝑋(𝑚)
+𝑓 (𝑚)
𝑌
100 1
5= 15
+𝑓 (𝑚)
𝑌
100 1
5- 15
=𝑓 (𝑚)
𝑌
1
-25/15 = 𝑓 (𝑚)
𝑌

𝑓𝑌 = -15/25 = -⅗ = -0.6 m = -60 cm

Its having a diverging nature.

4. An object of height +6 cm is placed perpendicular to the principal axis

of a concave lens of focal length -5 cm. Use the lens formula to
determine the position, size and nature of the image if the distance of
the object from the lens is -10 cm.

Given O=6 cm, f= -5 cm, u =-10 cm

Using lens formula
1 1 1
𝑓
= -
𝑣 𝑢
−1 1 1
5
= +
𝑣 10
−1 1 1
5
- 10
= 𝑣
−3 1 10
10
= 𝑣
, v =- 3
cm= -3.33 cm
𝑣 10
Now m = 𝑢 =- 3 𝑋 (−10) = ⅓
So positive m indicates its a virtual, erect
image.
𝐼
Again m = 𝑂
1 𝐼
3
=6
I = 6/3 = 2 cm (diminished)

5. If the image formed by a lens for all positions of the object placed in
front of it is always virtual, erect and diminished, state the type of the
lens. Draw a ray diagram in support of your answer.

6. An object of height 5 cm is placed perpendicular to the principal axis

of a concave lens of focal length -10 cm. If the object is placed at (u)
-20 cm from the lens, determine the position, nature and size of the
image.

7. The image of a candle flame placed at a distance of (u) =-30 cm from a
spherical lens is formed on a screen placed on the other side of the
lens at a distance of 60 cm from its optical centre. Identify the type of
lens and find its focal length. If the height of the flame is 3 cm, find the
height of its image.
Given u = -30 cm
v= 60 cm
1 1 1
Using lens formula
𝑓
= -
𝑣 𝑢
1 1 1
= +
60 30
= 20
; f=20 cm
Positive f indicates its a convex lens.
𝑣 −60
Now m = 𝑢 = 30
= -2
𝐼
Again m = 𝑂
𝐼
-2= 3
I = -6 cm
Image is real, inverted
