Due Date: 14-02-2025
1. A saturated sample of undisturbed clay has a volume of 19.2 cm3 and weighs 32.5 g. After
oven drying, the weight reduces to 20.2 g.
Determine the following:
(a) water content, (b) specific gravity, (c) void ratio, and (d) saturated density of the clay
sample.
2. A chunk of soil has a wet weight of 62 lb and a volume of 0.56 ft3. When dried in an oven, the
soil weighs 50 lb. If the specific gravity of solids Gs = 2.64, determine the water content, wet
unit weight, dry unit weight, and void ratio of the soil.
3. The natural water content of a sample taken from a soil deposit was found to be 12.0%. It has
been calculated that the maximum density for the soil will be obtained when the water content
reaches 22.0%. Compute how many grams of water must be added to each of 1000 g of soil (in
its natural state) in order to increase the water content to 22.0%.
4. A soil sample taken from a borrow pit has a natural void ratio of 1.15. The soil will be used for
a highway project where a total of 100,000 m3 of soil is needed in its compacted state; its
compacted void ratio is 0.73. How much volume has to be excavated from the borrow pit to
meet the job requirements?
5. A soil sample was tested in the laboratory for the consistency limits. The following data were
obtained:
No. of blows w (%)
8 43
20 39
30 37
45 35
The natural moisture content and plastic limit of the soil is found to be 40% and 25%
respectively.
Determine the following:
(a) Liquid Limit
(b) Plasticity Index
(c) Liquidity Index
(d) Consistency Index
(e) Flow Index
(f) Toughness Index
6. In a shrinkage limit test, a container of volume 9.6 cc was filled with soil slurry. The weight of
the saturated soil was 17.46 g. The slurry was then gradually dried, first in atmosphere and then
in an oven at a constant temperature of 110˚C. The weight and volume of the dried soil were
11.58 g and 5.22 cc, respectively. Determine the shrinkage limit of the soil and the shrinkage
ratio.
7. A sample of sand was found to have a water content of 20% and bulk unit weight of 1.93 g/cc.
Laboratory tests on the sand sample indicated the void ratios in the loosest and densest possible
1
states are 0.9 and 0.5, respectively. Calculate the relative density and degree of saturation of
the sample. Assume Gs = 2.65.
8. A given cohesionless soil has emax = 0.85 and emin = 0.5. In the field, the soil is compacted to a
mass density of 1800 kg/m3 at a water content of 8%. Take the mass density of water as 1000
kg/m3 and Gs = 2.7. What will be the relative density of the soil?
9. The following data were obtained from the sieve analysis of a soil sample:
Sieve size % Finer
4.75 mm 100.00
2.00 mm 99.25
1.00 mm 98.75
450 μ 98.00
212 μ 54.15
150 μ 7.60
75 μ 6
(a) Plot the grain size distribution curve and determine Cu and Cc.
(b) Classify the soil as per Indian Standard Classification (ISC) system.
10. Sieve analysis on a dry soil sample of mass 1000 g showed that 980 g and 270 g of soil pass
through 4.75 mm and 0.075 mm sieve, respectively. The liquid limit and plastic limits of the
soil fraction passing through 425 sieves are 40% and 18%, respectively.
Classify the soil as per
(a) ISC system, (b) USC system.
