INTRODUCTION

The subject of Product Analysis and Development focuses on the step-by-step process of

developing a garment from a provided sample. Its primary objective is to simulate a real-

world scenario where an individual, aiming to start their garment manufacturing unit, goes

through various research stages and procedures involved in the development cycle. This

comprehensive approach covers essential aspects such as fabric selection, fabric sourcing,

trim selection and sourcing, testing of fabrics and trims, creating sample garments,

production planning for bulk manufacturing, and product replication.

For our Product Analysis and Development project, we selected a Woman’s Solid Midi A -

line Skirt as the focus garment, allowing us to apply these processes practically and gain

valuable insight into the complexities of garment production.

The garment chosen is a Woman’s Solid Midi A -line Skirt. The Skirt has a solid colour and

a side opening with a long conceal zip. The fit of the garment is a A -Line Midi skirt .

The garment is Viscose Rayon material. The garment is designed for Indian customers under

the trend of the spring-summer 2025 collection of the brand Tokyo Talkies.

FABRIC TESTING OF SAMPLE FABRIC

SAMPLE 1 ( ISO 15025)

1. Burning Test-

Aim: To determine the fibre composition.

Material required: Fabric, match stick, candle.

Procedure: The candle is lit using a matchstick. The fabric swatch is brought to the flame of

the candle. The reaction of the fabric swatch to the flame is observed.

Observation: Odour described as a combination of burning paper or wood .

Result: The fabric is a Viscose Rayon material.

2. Thread Density-( ISO 7211)

Aim: To determine EPI and PPI in given fabric samples.

Material required: Pick count glass and fabric swatches.

Procedure: A fabric sample is laid on a glass surface illuminated from below or in

an illuminated area. The counting glass is kept perpendicular to the weft to count warp

threads per inch and vice-versa.

Result: Ends per inch (EPI)= 48

Picks per inch (PPI)= 65

3. GSM- (ISO -3801)

Aim: To determine the GSM of the main fabric and the sourced fabric

Material required: Round GSM cutter, GSM pad, Weighing balance and fabric

23
Procedure: Cut the fabric swatch using the GSM cutter. The diameter of the cutter is 113mm.

The area of the cut swatch is 105 cm. sq. Weight the swatch using the weighing machine.

Result: Weight of 100 cm/ sq. fabric = 2.65 grams

Hence, GSM of the main fabric = 30 grams/m sq.

4. Tearing Test-(IS0 13937)

Aim: To determine the tearing strength of fabric.

Material required: Fabric tear strength tester, steel ruler, scissors, a few pieces of fabric.

Procedure: Quality is chosen to make sample test results fall 15%~85% of the corresponding

ruler. The zero position of the machine should be calibrated, and the pendulum is raised to the

starting point. The sample is clamped in the fixture. The long side of the sample is parallel to

the top of the fixture, while its bottom is placed in the base of the fixture. The opposite side

of the groove is cut a notch of 20 mm×0.5mm by a knife, leaving a tear length of

43mm×0.5mm. Push “Stop”, and release the pendulum. When the pendulum makes a

backswing, you should grasp the pendulum to prevent the pointer position from damaging.

Read out data from the measuring device.

Result:

Warp ways- 10

Weft ways- 10

5. Colour fastness ( ISO 1050C06 )

Aim: Rubbing colour fastness refers to the ability to sustain original colour of dyed fabrics

when rubbing.

24
Material required: Electronic Crock meter, Gray Cards Evaluating Staining, Standard

Cotton adjacent fabric (50mm*50mm uses to circular friction head; 25mm*100mm uses to

rectangular friction head), Sample to be Tested

Procedure: To assess the rubbing resistance of cotton semi-finished fabrics without finishing

agents, a standardised testing procedure is followed. The sample is clamped onto the tester

with its length aligned to the tester's movement. A dry rubbing cloth, oriented to the friction

head's warp direction, undergoes reciprocating rubbing for 10 times in 10 seconds with a

100mm movement and 9N vertical pressure. After removal, a wet rubbing cloth, controlled at

95-105% moisture, repeats the process. The operation is performed multiple times. Upon

completion, both dry and wet rubbing cloths are evaluated for staining fastness using grey

cards. The final step involves drying the fabric at room temperature. This method ensures a

systematic assessment of fabric durability and quality under dry and wet rubbing conditions.

Observation: Wet fabric – pigmentation

Dry fabric – less pigmentation

Result: Wet fabric – 4

Dry fabric – 4

6. Fabric Thickness ( IS0 5084 )

Aim- To measure the thickness of a given fabric sample, ensuring that it meets specified

standards for its intended use in apparel or other textile products.

Material required: Fabric Sample, Thickness Measuring Instrument, Thickness gauge

Procedure: Cut a small piece of the fabric sample, ensuring it's flat and wrinkle-free. Place

the fabric sample on a flat, solid surface to ensure accurate readings. Gently lower the

presser foot of the thickness gauge onto the fabric surface, applying minimal pressure. Once

25
the gauge is in contact with the fabric, record the thickness reading displayed on the

instrument in millimeters or microns.

Results: 0.03 mm

7.Tensile Test ( ISO 13934)

Aim: To determine the tensile strength of a fabric.

Material required: Fabric Sample, Tensile Testing Machine, Universal testing machine

(UTM) or fabric tensile testing apparatus

Procedure: Cut a fabric sample, Ensure the sample is free from any defects like wrinkles,

folds, or damage that could affect the test result. Mount the fabric sample securely in the

clamps of the tensile testing machine. Ensure that the clamps are tight enough to hold the

fabric without causing damage to the edges. Set the gauge length (the distance between the

two clamps), typically 100 mm for textile testing. Gradually apply tension to the fabric by

pulling the sample at a constant rate (as per standard testing speed). The machine will record

the force required to stretch the fabric until it reaches the breaking point (ultimate tensile

strength). Observe the extension (elongation) of the fabric as the load increases.

26
Results: Warp - initial length- 15cm /final length- 18 cm

Extended- 1.9cm

Peak- 15.2 kg

Weft - initial length- 15 cm /final length- 21 cm

Extended- 1.6cm

Peak- 10.1 kg

8. Fabric Crease Test ( ISO 2313)

Aim: To determine the crease recovery angle of the given fabric sample and assess its ability

to recover from creases after being folded.

Materials Required: Fabric sample, Crease recovery tester, Weights, Protractor (to measure

recovery angle), Stopwatch (for time control).

Procedure: Cut fabric samples of specific dimensions (usually 4 cmx 1cm). Ensure the fabric

is conditioned for a standard period in a controlled environment (standard atmospheric

conditions: 20°C ± 2°C, 65% ± 5% relative humidity) to avoid variability in results. Fold the

fabric sample in half with the crease at the centre and apply pressure to create a visible

crease. Leave the sample folded for a specific period (usually 5 minutes) under a controlled

weight (if applicable). After the specified time, unfold the fabric and place it in the crease

recovery tester. Allow the fabric to recover for a standard time (usually 5 minutes). Measure

the angle between the two arms of the fabric sample using a protractor. This is called the

crease recovery angle. Higher recovery angles indicate better crease resistance.

Results: Unfolding- 33 degree

Folding- 90 degree
