ABSTRACT
Product analysis and development in garment making is a crucial process that bridges the gap
between buyer and manufacturing. This study focuses on the comprehensive analysis of
garment products, evaluating factors such as material selection, fit, functionality, and
improvements to ensure the product meets buyer demands and customer expectations. The
development phase encompasses a detailed exploration of fabric testing, pattern creation, test
fit, sampling, refining processes, quality control measures, and production efficiency. By
integrating innovative techniques and technology, this research aims to streamline production
processes, reduce lead times, and enhance product quality, ultimately contributing to more
sustainable and cost-effective garment manufacturing. The findings of this study will provide
valuable insights into optimizing the garment production cycle, from initial design to final
delivery.

INTRODUCTION
The subject of Product Analysis and Development focuses on the step-by-step process of
developing a garment from a provided sample. Its primary objective is to simulate a real-
world scenario where an individual, aiming to start their garment manufacturing unit, goes
through various research stages and procedures involved in the development cycle. This
comprehensive approach covers essential aspects such as fabric selection, fabric sourcing,
trim selection and sourcing, testing of fabrics and trims, creating sample garments,
For our Product Analysis and Development project, we selected a Woman’s Solid Midi A -
line Skirt as the focus garment, allowing us to apply these processes practically and gain
The garment chosen is a Woman’s Solid Midi A -line Skirt. The Skirt has a solid colour and
a side opening with a long conceal zip. The fit of the garment is a A -Line Midi skirt .
The garment is Viscose Rayon material. The garment is designed for Indian customers under
the trend of the spring-summer 2025 collection of the brand Tokyo Talkies.

PROCESS OF STUDY
1. Product analysis
17
2. Material requirement - After studying the design, we list down the material
3. Testing - Different types of tests are performed before producing the garment to make
Tests done – GSM, tear strength, tensile strength, burning test, colour fastness test,
4. Sourcing of materials:
Sourcing of fabric—The first process is to source the fabric, as the lead time for fabric

FABRIC TESTING OF SAMPLE FABRIC
1. Burning Test-
Procedure: The candle is lit using a matchstick. The fabric swatch is brought to the flame of
the candle. The reaction of the fabric swatch to the flame is observed.
an illuminated area. The counting glass is kept perpendicular to the weft to count warp
Aim: To determine the GSM of the main fabric and the sourced fabric
Material required: Round GSM cutter, GSM pad, Weighing balance and fabric
23
Procedure: Cut the fabric swatch using the GSM cutter. The diameter of the cutter is 113mm.
The area of the cut swatch is 105 cm. sq. Weight the swatch using the weighing machine.
Material required: Fabric tear strength tester, steel ruler, scissors, a few pieces of fabric.
Procedure: Quality is chosen to make sample test results fall 15%~85% of the corresponding
ruler. The zero position of the machine should be calibrated, and the pendulum is raised to the
starting point. The sample is clamped in the fixture. The long side of the sample is parallel to
the top of the fixture, while its bottom is placed in the base of the fixture. The opposite side

backswing, you should grasp the pendulum to prevent the pointer position from damaging.

Aim: Rubbing colour fastness refers to the ability to sustain original colour of dyed fabrics
when rubbing.

Material required: Electronic Crock meter, Gray Cards Evaluating Staining, Standard
Cotton adjacent fabric (50mm*50mm uses to circular friction head; 25mm*100mm uses to
Procedure: To assess the rubbing resistance of cotton semi-finished fabrics without finishing
agents, a standardised testing procedure is followed. The sample is clamped onto the tester
with its length aligned to the tester's movement. A dry rubbing cloth, oriented to the friction
head's warp direction, undergoes reciprocating rubbing for 10 times in 10 seconds with a
100mm movement and 9N vertical pressure. After removal, a wet rubbing cloth, controlled at
95-105% moisture, repeats the process. The operation is performed multiple times. Upon
completion, both dry and wet rubbing cloths are evaluated for staining fastness using grey
cards. The final step involves drying the fabric at room temperature. This method ensures a
systematic assessment of fabric durability and quality under dry and wet rubbing conditions.

Aim- To measure the thickness of a given fabric sample, ensuring that it meets specified
Procedure: Cut a small piece of the fabric sample, ensuring it's flat and wrinkle-free. Place
the fabric sample on a flat, solid surface to ensure accurate readings. Gently lower the
presser foot of the thickness gauge onto the fabric surface, applying minimal pressure. Once
25
the gauge is in contact with the fabric, record the thickness reading displayed on the
Results: 0.03 mm
Material required: Fabric Sample, Tensile Testing Machine, Universal testing machine
Procedure: Cut a fabric sample, Ensure the sample is free from any defects like wrinkles,
folds, or damage that could affect the test result. Mount the fabric sample securely in the
clamps of the tensile testing machine. Ensure that the clamps are tight enough to hold the
fabric without causing damage to the edges. Set the gauge length (the distance between the
two clamps), typically 100 mm for textile testing. Gradually apply tension to the fabric by
pulling the sample at a constant rate (as per standard testing speed). The machine will record
the force required to stretch the fabric until it reaches the breaking point (ultimate tensile
strength). Observe the extension (elongation) of the fabric as the load increases.

Aim: To determine the crease recovery angle of the given fabric sample and assess its ability
Materials Required: Fabric sample, Crease recovery tester, Weights, Protractor (to measure
Procedure: Cut fabric samples of specific dimensions (usually 4 cmx 1cm). Ensure the fabric
conditions: 20°C ± 2°C, 65% ± 5% relative humidity) to avoid variability in results. Fold the
fabric sample in half with the crease at the centre and apply pressure to create a visible
crease. Leave the sample folded for a specific period (usually 5 minutes) under a controlled
weight (if applicable). After the specified time, unfold the fabric and place it in the crease
recovery tester. Allow the fabric to recover for a standard time (usually 5 minutes). Measure
the angle between the two arms of the fabric sample using a protractor. This is called the
crease recovery angle. Higher recovery angles indicate better crease resistance.

QUALITY CHECKS FOR A LINE SKIRT
Dimensional Checks:
• Precise measurements of skirt length
• Waist and hip measurements within tolerance
• Button and placket placement consistency
• Symmetry of overall garment structure
Functional Checks:
• Smooth button functionality
• Placket opens and closes easily
• No loose threads or hanging ends
• Button strength and pull resistance
36
• No visible manufacturing defects
Grading Principles:
• Length remains consistent across sizes
• Width varies by approximately 1 inch per size change
• Waist measurement adjusts proportionally
• Maintain original skirt design and proportions
Grading Methodology:
• Horizontal measurements (waist, width) adjusted
• Vertical measurements kept standard
• Proportional reduction/increase from base size
• Ensures fit consistency across different sizes
37
POINT OF IMPROVEMENT
1. Refine side placket alignment for professional finish
2. Ensure precise button spacing and symmetry
3. Improve internal seam finishing for durability
4. Reinforce button attachment points
5. Ensure proper grain line alignment during cutting
6. Adjust waistband width for better proportions
7. Evaluate button size and style for aesthetic balance
