ELECTRIC MOPED DESIGN

The types of forces acting on vehicle:

1. Aerodynamic Drag
2. Rolling Resistance
3. Uphill Resistance
4. Acceleration
Parameters Units Value
Mass kg 185
Length m 1.8
Width m 0.65
Height m 1.1
Rolling Resistance µrr 0.006
Drag coefficient Cd 0.7
Air Density ƥ 1.25
Gravitational Acc g 9.81
Speed kmph 60
Frontal Area A 0.9
Hill Climbing ϴ 5
Velocity m/sec 16.66
Tyre radius m 0.25

2
Aerodynamic Drag = 𝟏/𝟐*ρ*CD*A*V
= 0.5*1.25*0.7*0.9*16.662
= 109.287 N

Rolling Resistance = m*g*μ*cosθ

= 185*9.8*0.006*cos5
= 10.847 N
Uphill Resistance = mg sinθ
= 185*9.81*sin5
= 158.174 N

Acceleration = m*v/t
= (185*16.66)/24
= 128.42 N

Total Tractive Force = Fd+Fr+Fa+Fh

= 109.287+10.847+158.174+128.42

= 406.728 N

Total Power = (Total Traction Force)*Velocity

= 406.728*16.66

= 6776.088 Watts

Torque= (Total Traction Force)*tyre radius

= 406.728*0.25

= 101.682 Nm

Motor of 7kw is required, 6000 rpm, Tmax=11.14 Nm

 Time required reaching maximum speed of 60 km/hr.

W (Angular Velocity) = 2*pi*rpm/60

= 2*pi*6000/60
= 628.318 rad/sec
Power = (Torque* Velocity * Gear ratio)/tyre radius

Velocity = (7000*0.25)/ (11.14*10)

V= 15.708 m/sec (Critical Speed)

(Efficiency*Gear ratio*Torque)/R=Fd+Fh+Fr + Inertia*(dv/dt)

(0.95*10*11.14)/0.25=10.878+157.984+0.39375v2+194.5* (dv/dt)

(dv/dt)=1.308 – 0.002024v2 ……….. (1)

Considering Dynamic Acceleration

(Efficiency*Gear ratio*Torque)/R=Fd+Fh+Fr + Inertia*(dv/dt)

Power= (Torque*velocity *Gear ratio)/radius

Torque (T) =175/v

(0.95*10*175)/0.25v=10.878+157.984+0.39375v2+194.5* (dv/dt)

(dv/dt)= (34.190/v) -0.868- 0.002024v2 ……….. (2)

By solving the simultaneous differential equations,

T= 24 sec
Battery Pack Calculations
1. Current Consumption by motor

Power = Voltage * Current

Current = 7000/72(V)

Current (I) = 97.22 Amps

2. Watt-Hour Calculations

Assume running time 1 hr.

Power = 7000 (W) * 1 (hr.) = 7000Whr

3. Ampere-Hour Calculations

Assume source must have 20-30% more than the

required energy

Power = 7000*1.2

Power = 8400 Whr

Amp- hr. = W-hr. /Battery Terminal Voltage

= 8400/72

= 116.66 Amp-hr. = 117 Amp-hr.

1 Hr. 72 V 117 Amp-hr.

 For Average Speed of 60 km/hr.

i. A Vehicle covers 60 km in 1hr. for a battery rating of

72V / 117 Amp-hr.

ii. A Vehicle covers 90 km in 2hr. for a battery rating of

72V / 234 Amp-hr.

iii. A Vehicle covers 120 km in 3hr. for a battery rating of

72V / 351 Amp-hr.

Let’s consider the First case for our calculation purpose:

 Energy Capacity of Battery = 8.5 Kwhr.

 Charge Capacity of Battery = 8500/72(V) (motor V)

= 118 Amp-hr.

 Number of cells in series = Motor voltage/ Individual

cell voltage

= 72/3.6

= 20

 Number of cells in Parallel = Charge Capacity of

battery/Individual cell current

= 118 / 2.2

= 53.63 =~ 54
 Total numbers of cells in a battery pack

= 20*54 = 1080 cells

 Total weight of Battery Pack = No of cells * average

weight of one cell

= 1080*0.045

= 48.6 kg

 Total cost of Battery Pack = Total number of cells *

cost of one cell

= 1080*140

= 1, 51,200 Rs.

 Running Cost per Km

Distance Covered = Range of vehicle* Number of

cycles in entire life

= 60*2000 = 120000 km

Therefore, the running cost of battery per km is,

= Cost of Battery Pack / Distance

Covered

= 151200/120000 = 1.26 Rs/km
