Lesson
Finding the Volume of a Rectangular Prism
1

What is it

How do you find the volume of rectangular prism?

Remember this:
 Volume is measured in cubic units such as cubic centimeters ( 𝒄𝒎𝟑 ),
cubic meters ( 𝒎𝟑 ) and cubic millimeters ( 𝒎𝒎𝟑)
 Use V = l x w x h to find the volume of a rectangular prism. Here l is the
length, w is the width and h is the height of the rectangular prism.
 Use V = 𝒔𝟑 to find the volume of a cube. Here, s is an edge of a cube.

What’s More

Direction: Find each volume using the appropriate formula.

An aquarium has a length of 120 centimeters, a width of 60 centimeters, and
a height of 100 centimeters. How much water is needed to fill the aquarium?

How will you solve the problem?

You can solve the problem following these steps:

STEPS ANSWER
Understand:
 Know what is asked in the The amount of water needed to fill the
problem aquarium.
 Know the given facts length = 120 cm; width = 60 cm;
height = 100 cm
Plan:
 Determine the operation or Multiplication: V = l x w x h
formula to use
Solve:
V=lxwxh
 Show the solution using the = Substitute 120 for l, 60 for w, and
formula 100 for h
= 120 cm x 60 cm x 100 cm
V = 720 000 𝒄𝒎𝟑
Check and look back:
 Check your answer You need 720 000 𝑐𝑚3 of water to fill the
 State your answer aquarium.

What’s More

Direction: Read the problem. Then, answer the questions that follow.
Amy has a box measuring 25 cm long, 20 cm wide, and 20 cm
high. If she will store rice in it, how many cubic cm of rice will it contain?

1. What is asked in the problem?

2. What facts are given?

3. What operaton will be used or formula to use?

4. Solve and answer.

3 Involving the Volume of a Rectangular Prism

What is it

Remember this:
To solve routine and non-routine word problem involving the volume
of a rectangular prism:
 We use the 4-step plan in solving the problem
 We use the appropriate formula
V=lxwxh

How about if the volume is given and either the length, width, or height is missing?
How will you solve it?

Example:

A building is 16 meters long and 9 meters wide. It has a volume of

3 312 cubic meters. How tall is the building?

STEPS ANSWER
Understand:
 Know what is asked in the The height of the building.
problem
 Know the given facts Volume = 3 312 𝑐𝑚3 ; length = 16 cm;
width = 9 cm
Plan:
 Determine the operation or Multiplication and Division:
formula to use h = V÷ (l x w)
Solve:
h = V÷ ( l x w )
 Show the solution using the = substitute 3 312𝑐𝑚3 for V, 16 cm for l
formula and 9 cm for w
= 3 312 𝑐𝑚3 ÷ (16 cm x 9 cm)
= 3 312 ÷ 144
h = 23 m
Check and look back:
 Check your answer The height of the building is 23 m.
 State your answer
What’s More
Direction: Find the volume of each problem using the formula.

1. A vault has a volume of 360 𝑚3 . It is 9 meters tall and 8 meters long.

How wide is the vault?
2. A rectangular prism is 7 cm long, 4 cm wide, and 5 cm high.
What is its volume?
