Science7 Q4 W6

The document outlines the role of solar energy in the formation of land and sea breezes, monsoons, and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). It explains how temperature differences between land and sea drive these phenomena, impacting weather patterns and water resource management. Additionally, it provides an activity for students to arrange steps demonstrating these processes.

_____________
Competency/ies: Explain how solar energy contributes to the occurrence of land and sea breezes,
monsoons, and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
Monsoons are large-scale seasonal wind patterns characterized by distinct wet and dry phases,
primarily driven by differences in temperature between land and sea. These winds bring significant
rainfall, particularly in regions like South Asia, Africa, and parts of Australia, profoundly impacting
agriculture, ecosystems, and human livelihoods. The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) plays a
crucial role in monsoon systems. The ITCZ is a belt of low-pressure areas encircling the Earth near the
equator, where the trade winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres converge. This zone shifts
north and south with the seasons, influenced by the Sun’s movement, leading to the development and
intensity of monsoons. When the ITCZ moves over land masses heated by the summer sun, it draws in
moist air from the oceans, resulting in heavy rainfall. Understanding monsoons and the dynamics of the
ITCZ is essential for predicting weather patterns and managing water resources in monsoon-prone
regions.

Direction: Arrange the steps in the correct order to show how solar energy contributes to the following
phenomena. Write the numbers 1 to 5 in the blanks provided.
A. Land and Sea Breezes

___ Warm air over the land rises, creating low pressure.
___ Solar energy heats the land faster than the sea during the day.
___ Cooler air from the sea moves toward the land, creating a breeze.
___ At night, the land cools down faster than the sea.
___ Cool air from the land moves toward the sea, creating a land breeze.

B. Monsoons

___ Solar energy heats the land more than the surrounding ocean during summer.
___ Dry, cool air moves from the land to the ocean.
___ Moist air from the ocean moves toward the land, causing heavy rainfall.
___ During winter, the land cools faster than the ocean, reversing the wind direction.
___ Warm air rises over the land, creating low pressure.

C. Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)

___ The ITCZ shifts north or south depending on the season.

___ Solar energy heats the air near the equator, causing it to rise.
___ Rising warm air creates a zone of low pressure.
___ Warm, moist air condenses, forming clouds and heavy rainfall.
___ Trade winds from both hemispheres meet at the ITCZ.
