Section A [45 marks]

Answer all questions.

1. Alina saved RM5000 in a bank that offered simple interest rate at 5.5% per year. After 6 years,
she withdraw a sum of RM K from the bank account. If the balance in the bank account 3 years
after the withdrawal was RM2700, determine the value of K. [6 marks]

2. The demand and supply function under perfect competition are pd = 1600 − 𝑥 2 and

ps = 2𝑥 2 + 400 respectively.

(a) Sketch the demand and supply curves on the same axes. Label the equilibrium point.

[4 marks]

(b) Find the producer’s surplus. [3 marks]

3. A linear programming problem is given as follows:

Minimise C = 100x + 80y

Subject to x + y ≥ 11

x–y≥3

x ≤ 14

x, y ≥ 0

a) Represent all the constraints graphically and shade the feasible region. [4 marks]
b) Determine the optimum solution and the corresponding value of C. [4 marks]

4.The following table gives the information for a simple project with their durations and preceding
activities.

Activity Preceding activities Duration (days)

A - 7
B A 3
C A 2
D B,C 4
E B 5
F A 3
G D,E,F 6

(a) Draw an activity on arc network for the project. Label your network with the activity,
duration, earliest start times and latest start times. [5 marks]
(b) State the critical path and the minimum completion time. [2 marks]

5. The demand rate for programming devices of an IT company is 60 units per month. The purchase
price is RM50 per unit and the holding cost is 12% per annum of the value of stock. The cost of
placing an order is RM175 per order. Shortages are not allowed. The company operates 250 days
per year and the lead time is 2 weeks.

a) Determine the economic order quantity and the frequency of ordering. [5 marks]

b) Calculate the minimum total annual inventory cost of the ordering policy. [3 marks]

c) Find the reorder point. [3 marks]

6. A two-person zero-sum game for two players, A and B, is represented by the pay-off matrix
below.

Game player B
B1 B2 B3
A1 10 80 20
Game player A A2 70 50 45
A3 60 90 30

(a) Determine whether the game has a stable solution. [3 marks]

(b) Find the best strategy for each player and the value of the game. [3 marks]

3
SECTION B [15 marks]

Answer one question only.

You may answer all questions but only the first answer will be marked.

7. A bank gives a 5% simple interest rate for the first year, 4% effective interest rate for the second
and third year and 6% nominal interest rate compounded monthly for the subsequent years. Ivy
intends to save RM 5000 for 5 years and after that a monthly additional savings of RM100 for the
next 20 years. After the 25 years period, she intends to withdraw her savings to buy an annuity
plan that pays her 7% nominal interest rate compounded monthly for the next 10 years.

a) Find the interest earned after 5 years. [7 marks]

b) Find the amount of money after 25 years. [4 marks]

c) Find the monthly payment she receives from her annuity plan. [4 marks]

8. The total cost and the total revenue (in RM) for the production and sale of x units of steam iron
are given respectively as follows:

𝐶(𝑥) = 2000 + 5𝑥 and 𝑅(𝑥) = 40𝑥 − 0.1𝑥 2

a) Find the profit function. [2 marks]

b) Sketch the cost function and the revenue function on the same axes. [3 marks]
c) Find the marginal profit functions, hence calculate the marginal profit at 𝑥 = 150,
𝑥 = 175 and 𝑥 = 200 respectively. Interpret these results. [5 marks]
d) Sketch the profit function and find the production level that yields maximum profit.
Show the break-even points on the graph. [5 marks]
