SECTION A(40 marks)

Q.1 Read the following passage carefully.

Water is a highly necessary part of human existence on Earth. The importance of

water can be compared to the importance of air. All living organisms - humans,
animals, plants need water.
Apart from drinking, there are other uses of water as well. It includes cooking,
washing, cleaning, etc. Water is not just a vital part of the human being’s survival. It
is important for the survival of trees and plants. Uses of water include agricultural,
industrial, household, recreational and environmental activities.
Natural sources of water include surface water, under river flow, groundwater and
frozen water. Artificial sources of water can include treated wastewater (reclaimed
water) and desalinated seawater.
Currently, the biggest problem related to global warming is a huge water
depreciation on Earth. This is mainly caused due to misuse of water happening at
various places. In the current scenario, it is important to understand the formula for
the conservation of water and thereby save water. Because pure water resources are
the primary sources for all our necessities. And when it becomes depreciated, it can
lead to huge catastrophic conditions for human beings.
Currently, there are many regions in the world that are facing extreme water scarcity
due to decline in groundwater and scanty rainfalls. Also, in some areas, the
groundwater is contaminated or it has been overused.
According to the WHO report, many people do not have access to safe drinking
water. Seeing this, the water crisis in the future does seem inevitable. Also, it calls
for an immediate action plan in order to conserve water so that precious resources
can be saved for today as well for future generations.
Rainwater harvesting is a simple strategy by which rainwater is gathered and stored
for future. The process involves collection and storage of rainwater with the help of
artificially designed systems like underground tanks. With depleting groundwater
levels and fluctuating climate conditions, this measure can go a long way to help
mitigate the adverse effects of rising water scarcity.
Save Water Campaign-this initiative can help and promote the conservation of
water. Also, it can spread awareness among the people about the importance of
water. Additionally, the save water campaign helps people realize that the sources of
fresh and pure water are very limited.
So, its overuse and wastage should be curbed. Through this campaign, we can create
awareness among the people about the benefits of preserving water, water
harvesting and using water judiciously.
