INTRODUCTION
Online shopping, often known as e-commerce, is the process of looking for and purchasing
products and services over the Internet using a web browser or application. Going online,
landing on a seller's website, completing a purchase, and scheduling delivery are all part of the
process. The buyer can pay for the goods or service online or at the time of delivery using a
credit or debit card. The fundamental appeal of internet shopping is that customers can locate
and purchase products they require (which are then delivered to their front door) without ever
leaving their home. Today, practically everything can be purchased online, resulting in annual
sales of billions of dollars.

Among the famous online shopping, Shopee is one of the most well-known online
buying sites. Shopee is Southeast Asia's and Taiwan's top e-commerce online shopping
platform. Through robust payment and logistical assistance, it gives consumers with a smooth,
secure, and quick online buying experience. Shopee offers a diverse range of products,
including consumer electronics, home & lifestyle, health & beauty, baby & toys, fashion, and
exercise equipment.

There are many Islamic management values that can be applied in a company or
organization but the concern here is if Shopee management is in accordance with Islamic
management. What are the issues that arise in Shopee management, and what are the Islamic
management values that may be highlighted to help Shopee become a better company? This
study is conducted to discover more about Shopee Management and some suggestion to
improve the company into a better company according to Islamic management.

1
HISTORY OF THE COMPANY
Shopee is an e-commerce site that provides online shopping services and more
excitingly it manages e-commerce platforms in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. In 2015, Shopee
was launched in 7 countries across the region such as in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia,
Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines. The Southeast Asian region is emerging as a
strong e-commerce market based on smartphone networks. Whether buying/selling clothes, or
paying bills, Southeast Asians prefer to do it through their smartphones as it is very flexible
with everything just using your fingertips. It is only in 7 years until now, the Shopee e-
commerce site has never collapsed and even more small traders are using the Shopee app to
market their sales.

In December 2015, Shopee University held its first session in Taiwan to raise the name
of the company and spread the positive value that can be given to all organizations under the
auspices of this platform and today, about 70k sellers in all Shopee markets have benefited
from the session this. 2 years after the establishment of Shopee, In June 2017, Shopee Mall
was launched in Taiwan and under this platform now has more than 11,000 sellers from various
countries in our 7 markets. In 2018, Gross Product Value (GMV) has already reached US $ 10
billion with over 600 million transactions on this platform. In the same year, May 2018, Shopee
launched the first Super Brand Day in Indonesia with P&G as our partner. Since then, Shopee
has organized 70 Super Brand Days across the region.

In 2018, Shopee announced BLACKPINK as a regional brand ambassador ahead of the

Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale. In 2019, Shopee introduced Cristiano Ronaldo as our brand
ambassador ahead of Super Shopee Shopping Day 9.9. Until now, every time the date of 12.12
materialized, Shopee would make a massive bargain sale. As of December 2019, Shopee had
already sold 80 million items all day at the Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale. In 2019, the platform
has 500 million total views on Shopee Live and over 1 billion games in the Shopee app.

2
MAIN ACTIVITIES OF THE COMPANY
“Understanding people is the key to successful leadership. In Shopee, we think it is
crucial to understand how to deliver the best experience, for employees, partners and
customers.” said Chris Feng, CEO of Shopee. Online shopping is where shoppers use the
application services provided to buy household items, clothes or kitchen items. Shopee is an
online marketplace between sellers and buyers who use this platform to buy unlimited products
widely from various online stores even from distant countries in several categories, including
electronics, home goods or fashion. Shopee earns very lucrative profits from market
commissions, transaction fees, CPC advertising on its platform, fulfillment services, payment
fees, as well as commissions paid by restaurants. Shopee operates on the market business
model, indirectly the main activity of the Shopee is to carry out buying and selling activities.
Moreover, Shopee offer employment opportunities and provide seminars to employees in
improving the performance of Shopee employees in a better direction.

Shopping can be done on Shopee’s regular platform and also through its mall products.
Shopee Mall will only list products from well -known and reputable and high - quality brands
such as Adidas or Samsung. The Shopee Mall application can persuade customers to buy
branded goods without hesitation even though the price reaches thousands of ringgits because
the scrutiny of each store registered under Shopee has been filtered from all the details. To keep
buyers tied to this platform, Shopee has produced Shopee Coin. Consumers can earn coins
every time they buy a product from the mall. The next coin, can be used to make discounted
purchases on the platform and this can provide savings to buyers every time they access a
purchase on the Shopee as well as provide benefits to consumers.

Aside from the shopping experience, users at Shopee can also play a variety of games
that give them a chance to earn a variety of prizes. Shopee is owned by a parent company called
Sea, which owns and operates a game development studio called Garena. The Shopee platform
can be accessed by browsing the company’s website or downloading its mobile and tablet apps
(available on Android and iOS devices). Furthermore, Shopee has launched a food delivery
arm that will compete with companies such as Grab and Food Panda. It was announced that
the restaurant will pay Shopee a commission for each order. These commissions are usually in
the range of 20 to 30 percent. In addition to the commission, customers also have to pay
shipping costs to bring food to them. on the launch of the first day of Shopee Food, it will
usually be given a promotion for customers to buy at a cheap price.

SWOT ANALYSIS OF THE COMPANY

SWOT is the best method in strategy planning that each company does to assess the
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that the company has. This is to ensure that
the company's management is well managed when conducting assessments to ensure that the
company can function properly. Therefore, the analysis of the Shopee company is as follows:

Strength

Shopee can be a person's main source of income in the future. This is because Shopee
business is one of the business fields available to sellers to sell their products in Shopee and
this becomes an initiative for them to increase their income online as it only takes a small
amount of capital to start a business in Shopee. This could make Shopee business nowadays
increase very sharply year-on-year making the potential for Shopee to grow more brilliantly.

Shopee also has a very extensive network of merchandise sellers and merchandise
owners across the country. This is because there is a huge selection of items that make
Shopee customers excited to shop for shopping such as home appliances, clothing, and
technology gadgets. In addition, Shopee also has a message room available to connect
between the seller and the customer to do inquiries and negotiate on the items that the
customer wants to buy. Shopee also provides customers with plenty of purchase coupons so
they can Shopee spend more than ever. Among the coupons provided by Shopee and store
owners to customers who want to shop are free shipping coupons, discount coupons and so
on.

Weakness

The disadvantage of the shoppe is that some store owners do not provide a complete
description of the products they sell. This will make the customer not know the condition of
the product whether it is in accordance with the customer's requirements. For example,
descriptions of health products, sizes of clothing and shoes make customers hesitant to buy
those items. This also happens when there are some sellers who do not be responsible when
posting their products that are not the same as in the picture with the items that the customer
has got after purchasing them. This will be the occurrence of fraud committed by store
owners when selling their products. In addition, there are some sellers who do not answer
customers' questions about the goods they sell. This makes it difficult for customers to buy

4
the products when the questions asked to the seller are not answered and can cause the rating
of the store to drop because of the service provided by the owner of the store is not good.

Next, the shipping cost at the Shopee is very expensive. This is because when a
customer buys a large or small item it still requires a high shipping cost except with coupons
offered by the Shopee can reduce the cost of shipping the item. This also happens when there
are customers who purchases large items such as furniture will cause the cost of delivery to
be higher to tens of ringgit.

Opportunities

The opportunity that a Shopee can use is when there are some brands that are not
marketed in a particular place that can give the opportunity to the Shopee to market the
products in that place. For example, products from China that are not available in Malaysia
will give them the opportunity to market their products into Malaysia at cheaper prices. This
allows their products to be expanded to the global level because many customers will be
attracted to new and cheap goods and even give sellers the opportunity to sell their goods.

In addition, the opportunity given to the Shopee is that the sellers can open their own
store at the Shopee to sell their goods. This can provide an opportunity for small traders to
increase their income through online sales that do not require high capital to open a business
as everyone has the potential to do business online.

Threats

The threat found in Shopee is that there is a hacker threat found in Shopee that could
damage the Shopee system. This can pose a threat to Shopee management in ensuring Shopee
systems are not harmed by external threats.

Moreover, the threat posed by Shopee is when there is a lack of interest from Shopee
as the items that customers want are available in their district especially local products such
as food and wet items. This is because they think that buying items available in their area will
save time which will take time for Shopee to deliver the products to the customer's place
within 4 to 7 days. Customers also think that they can save on the shipping costs charged at
Shopee especially when they buy large items such as furniture. This can buy threats to sellers
at Shopee to sell their products to customers as products sold are readily available in the Area
where they live.

5
There is, then, there is competition between the competitors in Shopee which is the
seller to sell their products. This is because sellers need to ensure that they can attract
customers by having great promotions and offers to customers for them to shop in their stores
especially during the monthly sale season held in Shopee.

ISSUES & SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE THE COMPANY FROM ISLAMIC

MANAGEMENT’S PERSPECTIVES

1. SPayLater
SPayLater is Shopee’s new payment feature. It lets buyers to purchase the items and pay for
them at a late. SPayLater or Shopee Pay Later, is only available through the Shopee app.

SPayLater is a payment service that allows users to consolidate their purchases on

Shopee monthly. Users can make a one-off payment on the consolidated outstanding amount
at the end of each month. Users also have the option to spread out their repayment to 2
months, 3 months, or 6 months (selected users) with a small processing fee of 1.25% of the
total order amount.

SPayLater is a buy-now pay later payment system provided by Shopee. Consumers

can make purchases immediately and pay them next month at once or through instalment
plans for several months either 2 months, 3 months, or 6 months. Shopee has appointed Sea
Money Capital Malaysia Sdn. Bhd to manage Shopee’s instalment payment operations.

Shariah Issues in SPayLater

After examining the system offered, we concluded that there are several Shariah issues for
the payment methods offered. The issues identified are as follows:

➢ Processing Fee (Processing Fee)

• Processing Fee is an additional charge applicable for customers who choose an
instalment plan offered by Shopee. Customers who choose a fee using the
instalment plan will be charged a processing fee of 1.25% per month of the total
purchase. No additional charges will be imposed if the customer pays on a one-off
basis within a month.

6
• Processing Fee charged above is seen as having an element of usury as it takes
advantage of the loan provided. Nevertheless, contemporary scholars have
discussed the service charge and the like. Service charge is allowed in compliance
with the following stringent conditions:
▪ The charges imposed shall coincide with the actual cost.
▪ The charges imposed should be based on direct costs instead of indirect
costs such as workers' salary payments and office rents.
▪ The charges are not charged by percentage of the loan amount. On the
other hand, it should be at the actual rate of management costs involved
without any additions.
▪ It may be charged in the form of an estimate if it is difficult to place a
definite amount unless the account closes at the end of the year. So, if the
actual amount is known, each surplus must be returned to the debtor
according to the mutually agreed medium.
▪ (Refer to AAOIFI Shariah Standards, No.19 Loan (Qard), pp 518-519;
Fatwa Dar al-Ifta' Jordan No.3073)

➢ Late Payment Fee (Charge Through Pay)

• Late payment Fee or Late payment fee will be charged to customers who fail to
make payment within the specified time frame for both payment methods.
Customers will be charged an additional 1.5% of the amount outstanding monthly.

• The above Late Payment Charges are seen to have a clear usury element. This is
because each debt that includes additional payment due to delay in payment is
included in the riba al-Qard category as explained.

However, if the charge is imposed to cover the cost of loss, then it is allowed provided that
the cost based on actual cost (actual loss) as compensation (ta'widh) is not considered as a
fine (gharamah) nor additional income for the financial provider. (Refer: Shariah Resolution
of the Shariah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia on Ta'widh and Gharamah,pp.
129-130)

7
The SPayLater system involves debt. This is because Shopee-appointed Sea Money
will pay Shopee sellers in advance on behalf of the buyer, then the customer will have to pay
to Sea Money in instalments or one-offs within a month. As such, customers are indebted to
Sea Money when using SPayLater's service.

As the questions raised are related to debt, the discussion of this article will focus on
the issues of usury occurring in this instalment payment system involving deferred payments
(debts) and the imposition of excess charges. In Islam, usury is banned, and the parties
involved with it will get a great sin. This can be seen through the following statement of
Allah SWT:
and God solved the sale and forbidden riba

He has legalized trading and banning usury.

Surah al-Baqarah (275)

Scholars when describing the ban on usury state that, usury means additional. In the
context of debt, usury is an additional charge that is imposed on the amount of the debt or
additional charge because a person is late in paying the debt. While the increase or profit
margin in ordinary trading is not considered usury. (Refer Tafsir al-Tabari 13/6; Tafsir al-
Mawardi 347/1; Tafsir al-Baghawi 342/1)

Scholars divide usury into two main categories namely Riba al-Qard (occurring in
debt transactions) and Riba al-Buyu' (occurring in the sale and purchase of ribawi goods such
as gold and silver). (Refer al-Fiqh al-Islami wa Adillatuh 3739/5)

Therefore, the debate that is the focus in answering this question will focus on the
ruling of hakam related to usury in debt (riba al-Qard). Furthermore, there is a hadith narrated
by al-Haris where the Prophet PBUH stated that every debt that includes benefits or profits in
return is considered as usury.

8
The Prophet PBUH said:

every loan that's a benefit is a god.

"Every debt that benefits the profit (to creditors) is usury.

Narrated by al-Haris in Musnad al-Haris (437)

To facilitate the understanding of riba al-Qard, here are two of the following situations:
Ali loaned Ahmad 100 ringgit and asked him to pay 110 ringgits, the excess 10 ringgit was
usury. Ali lent 100 ringgits to Ahmad and Ahmad had to pay within a month. However,
Ahmad missed the debt. Ali charges 10 ringgit because Ahmad is late in payment. The RM10
charge is usury.

Conclusion
After a review of Shopee's instalment payment system, SPayLater, we found that
there were several Shariah issues that arose. The shariah issues are on processing charges and
late payment charges that have usury elements. As for the one-off payment method within a
month, there is no Shariah issue on it as there is no usury element and it can be used.

However, if the customer is late in payment and is charged an additional fee, then
there is a riba al-Qard. It is affirmed that Muslims are prohibited from engaging in any
transactions that have usury elements because usury is haram and a great sin. Thus, to make
Shopee a better company, it is recommended that the company adopt an economic
environment based on Maqasid Syariah by practicing transactional law (laws regarding the
economic rules for transactions and providing services).

2. Does Not State Detailed Information

In line with the increasingly busy lifestyle changes, the method of buying online (online) is
now gaining a place in the hearts of consumers. Online shopping is chosen as an easy way to
shop for necessities without having to queue at the counter. While consumers are not able to
make a real choice, but consumers can select through pictures attached by the seller or dealer
on their website and that is a good method to provide convenience and explain about the
product items being sold.

9
However, these online purchasing activities are also prone to several vulnerabilities,
particularly such as consumer exposure to fraud by online merchants. A product must provide
a clear picture and information to facilitate consumers because there may be some consumers
who are less literate about online sales is not easy for them if the information about a product
or product is incomplete.

Hence, this vague information is also an issue to online purchases that merchants need
to attach to the goods or products to be sold. Among the information that traders need to detail
in a product is in terms of pricing, product information released, product type, product content
and approval of a product. Fraud is defined as a deliberate attempt, whether successful or not,
to cover up, fabricate something or manipulate information factually or emotionally, through a
written medium or otherwise, aimed at building or maintaining a trust in the other party, which
where the maker of the communication himself is aware that it is misinformation

Guoetal (2012) found that goods characteristics have importance in determining

consumer satisfaction and online shopping experience. So of course, consumers expect the
items purchased through this online are as displayed during the advertisement. Lopes and
Galletta (2006) state that good information content influences consumers ’willingness to
purchase a product. Online merchants typically provide a lot of product information that buyers
can use when wanting to make a purchase (Lim & Dubinsky, 2004), yet still cannot be
described in detail in websites so some people think the product information provided is not
enough for consumers to decide.

So of course, the advantages of a product cannot be well understood by consumers.

Goods or services that are supposed to meet the needs of consumers will be marginalized and
rejected by them because information that should not be clearly displayed. So, due to this
inaccurate or unclear information that causes consumers to misunderstand in a product or
product to the purchase of the item.

Thus, to overcome this problem in an online purchase, it is necessary to adopt the

concept of Islamic value in setting the information of an item so that it does not occur in the
purchase of the item. The information must also be clearly stated and follow the guidelines
based on the product to be sold.

Business is one of the most significant aspects of mu'amalah (worldly transactions) in

Islam, and it is given a lot of attention. When it comes to business, Islam teaches the ideals that
must be obeyed and followed by its members. Unfortunately, the current reality reveals that

10
many Muslims still prefer to follow and implement business ideas and procedures that may or
may not include and showcase Islamic values.

Islam is a religion that is very integral and comprehensive, also governs all facets of
life thing. Islam is the religion of Allah revealed on this earth, to have uniqueness that no other
religion. According to (Antonio, 2001: 5) uniqueness is as sharia has comprehensively and
universal nature, meaningful comprehensive Islamic sharia summarizes all aspects of human
life, both religious (ritual) and social (muamalah). Value according to (Danandjaja, 1986: 22)
is internalized notions of what a person is more important or less important, what is better or
less good, and the more true or less true. In methodological models that value can only be
understood if it is associated with attitudes and behaviours: Value, Attitude, Behaviour. Islamic
values as basic values that embraced many world-famous companies, spur creativity and
initiative of employees to make improvement to the system, the employee relations manager,
between employees on the team, and between team built on trust, competence, and character.

Truthfulness has been much emphasized in Islam, not only as a virtue, but also as a
religious obligation; and falsehood has been admonished severely. Islam demands that its
followers lead their life since truthfulness and fair dealing. Falsehood and dishonesty must be
avoided because they mark departure from religion. Telling lie is one of the major sins in Islam.
Muhammad was asked whether a Muslim could be a coward. He answered: 'Yes.' He was asked
whether a Muslim could be a miser. He answered: 'Yes.' He was again asked: 'Can a Muslim
be a liar?' He replied: 'No.' Falsehood is seen as something which is against the general
characteristics of human nature: it corrupts the human soul and paves the way for many other
evil activities.

In Islam, honesty and trustworthy are fundamental requirements in business activities.

The Prophet was very intense in encouraging Muslims to be honest and trustworthy in their
business activities. He himself was always honest in conducting business. He forbade traders
to put down rotten goods on the bottom pile and new ones on top to deceive the prospecting
buyers. These two attitudes are implemented by not taking one’s rights more than what they
should be and, at the same time, not reducing the rights of others from their appropriate portion,
keeping all promises, respecting agreements, being punctual, and so forth.

It can be concluded that Islam teaches us remarkable values pertaining principles and
ethics in conducting business activities. Those values, which are contained in the Quran and
the Hadith and exemplified by practices of the Prophet Muhammad guide every Muslim

11
conducting their mu’amalah activities, including business. Those activities must not only
consider this present worldly needs and benefits but also aim to attain prosperous life in the
hereafter. All mu’amalah activities are eventually purposed to attaining benefits to mankind
justly and proportionally as well as resisting any harm from them. Such is in line with realizing
one of the roles of mankind as the vicegerents of Allah on this earth which is to demonstrate
Islam as a religion of raḥmatan li al- ‘alamin (a blessing to all the universe).

3. Purchase Of Unclaimed Goods

Nowadays, our society often shopped online, especially in Malaysia which is hit by the
Coronavirus outbreak today. Shopee's platform, which is our raid when the month of promotion
arrives, is indeed a scramble for people to buy goods at Shopee. It has become common place
that Chinese online stores registered on the Shopee e-commerce platform sell mysterious items
or unclaimed items at wholesale/ cheap prices. Moreover, online sellers have already informed
in advance that the items being auctioned are random and it is likely that the unclaimed items
purchased contain mere junk.

These unclaimed goods exist when the buyer does not pick up the goods for a long
period of time, and then automatically the goods will become the property of the hub where
the goods are stored. Therefore, to avoid loss and dumping of the claimed goods, they resell
them. Usually, these sellers also give the idea to gift these mysterious items to friends as a
birthday gift or prank. The seller added a further statement that these mysterious items were
appropriately given to contacts as a surprise. According to some feedback, buyers get pens,
tempered glass, soil vitamins for farming and more.

The second reference to the law of sale and purchase is Hadith. Rasulullah SAW
himself was a trader. In a hadith narrated by Muslim, the Prophet once stated: "Gold is
exchanged for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, dates for dates, salt for salt, the same
weight and immediately handed over. If it is of different types, then sell it as you like but it
must be immediately handed over/in cash "(Narrated by Muslim: 2970). Broadly speaking,
trading in Islam is allowed. But it must meet all the requirements and pillars.

However, before buying goods, the law of buying and selling mysterious box items that
need to know the contents, especially for those who are Muslims. According to the Office of
the Mufti of the Federal Territory, the law of buying and selling mystery boxes is not allowed
and canceled according to Islamic law because it does not comply with the basic principles and
12
conditions of sale and purchase, that is, goods for sale must be known and determined by the
type of goods specifically accepted by Uruf. Therefore, the buyer shall duly return the goods
to the seller and the seller shall fully refund the money received. Alternatively, if there are
difficulties in returning the goods because they have been used or otherwise, then it is necessary
to make a new sale and purchase agreement based on the goods received provided the buyer
fully relinquishes the purchase of the goods and the seller is also satisfied with the value of the
payment given.

The law of sale and purchase in Islam is also known as the law of Muamalah. This law
was initially applied to protect the rights of Muslims in conducting transactions. Even to this
day, after going through various changes of the times, Islamic law is still used. Such are briefly
the conditions and pillars of sale and purchase in Islam that must be agreed upon in relation to
current issues. Especially to people who are Muslims, before doing a sale and purchase
transaction should be aware of the following things before being sure to do a sale and purchase.

4. Tighten Company Policies

As we know Shopee offers cheap prices compared to other companies. However, there are
various disadvantages that should be considered such as tightening company policies. This is
because there are various complaints from buyers about the seller, the quality of goods and
fraud. One of the drawbacks in shopping online is that we cannot be sure whether the products
offered are genuine or counterfeit. Shopee sellers of course claim that the items sold are genuine
products.

However, some cases of fraud using counterfeit products still occur. For example, the
buyer gets the goods that are not the same as shown. In fact, the goods that arrive are not at all
as told. There are also some complaints of sellers who send damaged goods to the buyer. The
case can be reported, and the buyer's money will be refunded. However, usually the sellers who
send damaged goods tend to be aggressive. The seller will ask the buyer to confirm immediately
after the goods arrive. Some sellers even call by phone number.

Furthermore, most novice buyers are intimidated by the seller's attitude. Finally,
clicking the Report User button, the panicked buyer then clicks the Goods Received button.
Moreover, the buyer does not have evidence such as video when opening the damaged goods.

13
With this, the Shopee should improve the company's policy and set conditions and inspect a
seller and the goods to be sold. This can ensure the best quality and service from Shopee.

In addition, there is also a scam through Shopee pay that is via SMS this is a scam called
phishing. Phishing is being able to get into someone's account by stealing important
information, such as personal data and passwords. In this case it will cause the buyer to fall
into the scam. For example, the buyer will be asked to provide an OTP if they want to redeem
a gift. This allows them to access someone's account. In addition, the seller uses tactics by
placing an unreasonable price. This will attract buyers who always like cheap goods, but this
is just a tactic held by the seller for profit but does not ensure the quality of the goods. Weak
policies will cause performance in a company will decline.

In Islamic management environment, corporate culture can be related to the above

issues. Tawhid is the main tenet that needs to be emphasized which puts work as an act of
worship., the corporate culture itself is not found in classical Islamic literature, but if we may
consider reference of corporate culture which are formulated by experts in the organizational
behaviour of the previous description, the set of values which consist of the main characteristic
that is valued and embraced by an organization, with values that lead to a sense of purpose and
a common goal for every member of the organization, and influence the behaviour of
organizational members every day, then Islam has a set of values that are contained in Islamic
texts, the Qur’an, and the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad.

Thus, Islamic Corporate Culture can be defined as a set of values and cultural
characteristics of the company that refer to Islamic texts, the Qur’an, and the Hadith of the
prophet Muhammad SAW. Qutb (1985) proposed some Islamic values and behaviours in
organizations, such as sincereness for God and to do the work based on love for God,
muhasabah (introspection), honest, optimistic (not desperate), likes to repent to Allah and ask
forgiveness for any human error, eager to learn, humble, helping each other in doing the work
and for the good of one another, respect leadership, kind thought, no gossip, no malice, as well
as positive deliberation on every occasion.

Besides Qutb, Qudamah (1997), also filed several values and organizational behaviour
and work, such as sincere, earnest, empathetic, patient, consistent, improving the quality of
work, the spirit, of being watched God at work (muraqabah), honest, responsible, always
remember the afterlife without neglecting the world, communicate to and as leaders in a good
way. Tasmara (2001) proposed some value in the organization of work that is; sincere, working

14
optimally, earnest, professional, consistent, effective, efficient with time, innovative, creative,
has desire to seek knowledge, teamwork (charity jama'i), and portrays service excellence.
Madhi (2002) describes the values taken from the history of the Prophet and the companions
that can be summarized as follows; fair, exemplary (qudwah hasanah), shidq, responsible,
fathonah (intelligent), tabligh (can communicate well), consistent transfer of knowledge,
discipline, mutual trust, not excessive in any way, effective, and efficient.

If Shopee uses this method of Islamic corporate culture, the company will be more
successful and more effective as well as avoid unwanted incidents and issues as demanded by
Allah s.w.t and the example shown by The Prophet SAW. In the management of Islam always
emphasizes the issue of Tawhid in every organization. The Prophet SAW said:

From Khaulah Al-Ansariah Radiallahu Anha he said: I heard the Prophet SAW say: That
people who mix the property of God in a way that is not lawful, then they will get the

5. Low Pay Levels of Courier Workers

The issue that is to be highlighted in this case study is when there is a day-to-day management
Shopee cannot run smoothly for some reason. Such a thing would ruin the running of the
Shopee system even within one day. therefore, the issue to be raised about Shopee management
system is that the level of salary given to Shopee express courier workers is too low.

The issue of Shopee express courier workers' overly low pay occurs when workers feel
their pay is too little because they are not worth the job that they do in one day. Shopee express
courier workers are so angry about this news that they don't work within days of delivering
items to customer’s home. This has caused items to be delivered by Shopee express to take a
very long time and cause Shopee customers to feel angry about the services provided by
Shopee. This is because Shopee express courier workers who staged a demonstration of strikes
to show a dissent against the devolution of the commissions received by them.

There is an Islamic value that can be linked to the issue of Shopee express courier
workers in the way that management needs to instil empathy in organizing. managers need to
take good care of the welfare of employees by ensuring that their employees are rewarded
commensurate with their work. This is because despite having differences of rank and
jurisdiction, superiors cannot oppress subordinates and need to understand each other.

15
This is because in Islamic management, is very much emphasizing all jobs whether in
terms of relationships, finances, and success. This shows that in any occupation demanded by
Islam should complement each other and not oppress each other.

According to surah Al-Maidah verse 8 which means:

(O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do
not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to
righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.)

This verse explains that Allah commands his people to be fair in every matter even if
they differ in terms of race and religion because they can evoke respect for fellow human beings
in all matters. Therefore, every management, whether small or large, we must always care
about others. and be fair in all things.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, there is no denying that Shopee is becoming more popular among the
community. This is because this platform offers a variety of needs at an affordable price but
still quality. However, there are various shortcomings and weaknesses of Shopee Company in
terms of goods, service, security and so on. Here, by using Islamic management methods can
improve and strengthen the system of Shopee Company likes to use Maqasid Syariah system
in determining a decision. In addition, apply Islamic Corporate Culture in each employee and
finally teach and practice Islamic Ethical Values in the organization. We can see that using the
method of Islamic Management will result in success in this world and the hereafter.

Rasulullah S. A.W has emphasized that the position of business is a high position in the sight
of Allah SWT as his words mean:

"Nine -tenths of the source of sustenance (can be obtained) through business"

(Hadith Narrated by Tirmizi).

Therefore, anyone who conducts business, whether small or large, but still within the
scope of business, has a high position and rank in the sight of Allah SWT. Based on the above
hadith we can conclude that by using the method that has been carried out in the time of
Rasulullah SAW that is based on Islamic Management based on the Quran and Sunnah will
give better results and more effective for an organization.
